there isn't other?

Ambrose LeGaillard

Powder Monkey
Ahoy mates,

I'm roaming the seven seas of the Caribbean, and for now i'm following the main quest, butnow, an ask started to come: aye, I know may be stupid, but......

there isn't other to do than the MQ?
Can I do other things, like switch side and become a corsair for Spain,France,Portugal, or join the Coast Brotherhood or I am bonded to follow only the MQ until the end?

Aye, the MQ is very powerful and nice, but limit hardly my pleasure.

Which storyline are you playing? The Standard one? There are several sidequests available there.
Also, in any storyline you can get a Letter of Marque from the national governors and go work for them.

well, I follow the usual Silehard quest.
After the conquest of Oxbay I have saved my position in the sea for gain freedom to move and avoid the usual Silehard "enlistment" - i really hate to be "taken in the Crown forces" with this blackmailing way, then after this important save I have continued following Silehard schemes and missions.
I have also noticed that in pirates and smugglers dens I can find a man that provide to stop France threats to me, then every national navy become neutral with me (in the Relations screen the situation is normal, with the 2 clinking tankards, only Pirates are enemies, but this go well with me,I need enemies to board, ahr ahr!!!)

Now with my first important save I like goaround, and commerce/battle without the Silehard fat stomach over me.

Usually I start to gain with escorts, then I go to board some barque, or I get from the shipyard and start my first commerce enterprise, loading fully and selling when the market require a certain merchandise, this until I gain a big sum for get a Fluyt and make BIG deals:)

My fav tactic is to get a ship for commerce, and an escort ship for defend her: e.g. a barque (unharmed and fully loaded) and a fully armed ship (lugger, sloop. galeoth) as escort.

Of course I change my cruising stile, when I'm tired of comerce I restart sea action arming a powerful vessel for the pleasure of encounter and capture/sink enemies.

Also, I like to save some money for better my reputation with proper gift at the church: I have also seen that escorting people make reputation raise...

Now I'm restarting my game from Oxbay, for living a new great life in the Caribbeans and avoid His Fatness Silehard.

Since you mention Oxbay then you're not playing the latest Build Mod. If you're playing basic unmodified POTC then head to Douwesen. You'll probably see some women standing round in front of the governor's house. Try chatting them up. :) If your reputation is good then the priest at Redmond may have a job for you as well; this job is not perhaps as interesting as sailing around plundering ships, but there may come a time when it will be useful to have a friend in the church...

The first time you go to Quebradas Costillas, you will witness a rather one-sided fight. You can choose to help the disadvantaged man or let the bully finish him off, then whichever one is still standing will make you an offer. It's worth helping the disadvantaged man because his side quest actually works. :) (If you've played the main quest to completion before then you may have seen this because Silehard sends you to Quebradas Costillas, but the fight and introduction happens when you first go there regardless of what you have or have not been doing for Silehard.)

The main quest does not stop you from doing other things. Silehard is a patient man and will wait until you have done his jobs in your own good time. Which means you can do the main quest and do some escorting, plundering or additional quests.

If you have Build Mod 13 then you'll be playing on an expanded map including original place names such as Oxbay, and several additional quests are available. In this case, get to Falaise de Fleur and talk to everyone because at least four people have interesting things to say to you.

Of course you can do other things. And yes, you can be of service to any nation just buy a Letter of Marque as Sire Pieter Boelen have mentioned. And of course, as soon as you've built a good name(fame), the Brotherhood may take notice of you in which you can now join them. And oh, the pirate shipyard/store owners and blacksmith won't entertain you if you have a really nice reputation(e.g. dashing/hero).
Since you mention Oxbay then you're not playing the latest Build Mod.
The names mentioned here is a little confusing sometimes but I myself is still using the old names when mentioning them on my other comments/threads.

I also have to put in quite some effort to not use those anymore. Especially since they ARE still used in the code, which is what I tend to look at fairly frequently.

In another thread Ambrose says his starting ship is the Victory. I don't think he's using old names because he forgot the new names. :)

Which means, Ambrose, if you are playing PoTC straight out of the box, you can disregard any comments about Letters of Marque because they don't exist unless you've installed one of the Build Mods. If you don't follow the main quest then you're stuck with the English flag. If you do take the King's Shilling, and as much of the rest of the King's money as Silehard will give you, then eventually you get tired of working for him and go off with someone else...
