Too many questions

Hello there
I recently downloaded the build 13 mod and began playing the game. And i was quickly amazed at the depth you have given to a game i otherwise didn't enjoy. This is without doubt one of the best mods i have tried.

But all these options, all these choices. It makes me feel really lost

For example
How can you sail against the wind? I like realism. so i have the realistic options turned on. But it's a bit frustating when i fx convince a french captain to surrender his frigate to me... But then i accidentaly sail by it, and can't just turn around and sail up to it again, since i would have to sail against the wind, which i can't.. Is there some secret trick, other than the sail to quick commands?

What is a letter of marque? how does it work?

What effect does it have to be in a nation's good graces?

How does the smuggling and trade runs work? I never really understood how to profit from all that..

What can you use personal wealth to?
How does estates work?

Are there anye ships models in the game that resembles the Endeavor ship from Pirates triology? It is the ship that
is destroyed by the black pearl and Davy jones' ship in the 3rd movie

The characters reputation, (Bloke, bloody terror, etc) what does that mean?

Dividing the plunder, i didn't understand that either. Wouldn't it just be possible to amass a whole lot of wealth, and then when it's pay day, stash the money at a loansharks office or something like it, so they'd only have share a tiny bit of money?

That was just the questions i could think of at the moment.. Are there any tutorials or something like that, which a newcomer like me could read?
Note: I looked at most of the documentations in the buildinfo, and snooped a bit around piratesahoy with the search engine, so i have given it a try
I hope you can spare some time to help me out.. I would appreciate it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

you dont have to divide the plunder, you can choose to keep yer crew paid on a monthly basis...

A letter of marque is a letter obtained through a govenor that basically says that that nation (IE england, spain, whatever) is your friends, youre working for them and they give you their permission to assault and plunder the ships of their enemies... in the build it further allows you to attain rank for that given nation, allowing you to become a naval officer with all their perks, such as owning land, and in the build 14s you can buy the real big ships, since they require you to have have a certain rank before you can buy them (but then again, a real pirate does buy ships... he boards them and makes them his own, and at some point he sells them)

estates are the reward you get when you are promoted by a governor when you're in that nation's service. they give you a daily income which goes to your personal wealth.

the ships most similar to the endavour would be the light manowar (in size) or the regular manowar (in decorations and shape).

personal wealth partially determines your notiority. high enough notiority can allow you to join the pirates. it won't get very high unless you serve a nation though.

So you just buy a letter of marque, and go out and plunder <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />?

yup. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

for smuggling, find out what cargo is contraband on a particular island by looking at your trade book in the f2 menu. Go to a store on another island and buy the cargo. Then sail to the island where you will be smuggling and go to the tavern. There should be a guy somewhere in the tavern named "smuggler". Talk to him and agree to sell your stuff. Then sail to the beach that he indicated (you may have to try different beaches before you find them, and it may have to be at night. I'm not real fresh on that; I just recently started using the build 13 u3). There should be a group of people there to talk to. You have several options. You can sell the goods and kill the smugglers, sell the goods and leave, sell the goods and buy some provisions for your ship, sell your goods and fight with the local authorities and so on. Smuggling is fun and if the authorities show up, you might have a chance to get a new ship. And trust me, if you get to sell your cargo, you will make a profit <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

For trading, you can either talk to the merchant in the store and discuss business and take a job to transport cargo, but I don't do this because it's buggy. I go to the trade book and buy cargo from an island that is exporting that cargo and then sell it at an island that is importing that cargo.

For sailing against the wind you must learn to tack. Tacking is basically zig-zagging. You can only sail into the wind at an angle (in the simulation mode), so you have to sail at that angle for a while and then jibe (quickly change direction) or zig-zag to the other direction into the wind. The seafaring terms are: put your ship on a close-reach tack into the wind. If you have a for'n'aft rigged vessel, you can go all the way to close-hauled. If you have the wind blowing from your right to left, you are on a starboard tack. You want to alternate between starboard and port (wind blowing from left to right) tacks. It is very hard to do this with a square-rigged ship (the simulation mode does not allow you to sail into the wind hardly at all which is quite unrealistic as most square-rigged vessels had staysails and gaffsails or lateen sails and jibs so they could get fairly close to the wind). You may have to wait for the wind to change and then wait some more if the change is not favorable.

It may also help to avoid the situation altogether. As you get closer to your prize, start slowing down. It is better safe than sorry. Even slow down too much and then speed up a little to get to him. If the ship has struck its colors, you don't have to get too close to board either.

as far as reputation, a bloke is a good old normal guy. It is positive but not great. Bloody terror is a really bad reputation. There are certain things in the game that you can't do if you have a bad reputation (like some of the quests) and some people may not talk to you.

There are <i>some</i> things you can't do in the game with a <i>good</i> reputation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

You could do as you suggest with the diving the plunder, yes. However, the morale of the crew depends on the amount of plunder devided in devide-the-plunder mode. Result of doing what you propose would be: You keep a lot of money, but your crew's morale will be lousy. They won't fight hard in boardings and they might cause a mutiny. So you can do it, but do it at your own risk! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I understand <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
And thank you all for your helpful replies

Lord Terror, would it make my ship better to sail against the wind (Using the zigzag technique you mention), if i put som points into my sailing skill?

adding points to your sailing skill should definately help. It will increase your turning rate and your speed a little so it will improve your ability to sail into the wind. I'm not sure if it actually lets you sail closer to the wind. I'll keep my eyes open for that one.

lord? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> i'm not a lord yet. although i will inherit a title. anyway, sailing skill does't increase your speed at all. what DOES increase your speed is learning sailing abilities, such as sea wolf and the abilities tied to it. sailing skill also increases hoisting and furling speed.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

i think he was talking about me since he mentioned the "zigzagging technique" that I mentioned <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
but then he halfway mentioned your name too, so... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

ahum. i seem to be the only one with 'terror' in his name in this topic. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> guess he mixed who said what up. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Harr! Glad te be a help to ye matey! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

Anymore questions, just ask. I love talking about sailing and stuff. I probably talk too much.

Glad you cleared up the sailing skill point thing Morgan Terror. I couldn't remember. I just knew that after I'd upgraded my character a descent amount my ship got faster (I'm sure that it's due to the abilities). I'll still have to see if the sailing skill affects your ability to sail closer to the wind. That would make since to me if it did, but on the other hand I'm almost kind of doubting it.

Also, if sailing skill improves turning rate at all (the abilities definitely do), then it will help in your sailing into the wind because you will lose less speed when you change tacks.

Sounds good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
By the way.. Running b13 with update 3, the game has gotten quite unstable.. It constantly crashes when i try to go to my ship from port or to my ship from the world map. It didn't happen on build14a7 or just regular potc..
I'm currently trying to install build 13 all over, but i'm not sure it's gonna help
Is there a workaround or fix for this? Or am i just going to live with it :p

Eh? As far as I knew it was the update 3 that is stable. Build 14a7 is really buggy and shows the bugs you've just described. I'm running build 14a6 additional with no problems but long loading times.

did you install build 13 update 3 over b14a7? that could explain it.

sailing skill drastically increases turnrate. having a xebec with 10 sailing skill can make you turn on the spot.

Okay :p
Yes, i found out the alpha 7 was unplayable heh.. When i boarded a ship, the framerate would drop so low, i couldn't even attack :/
Only way to get proper framerate during boarding was standing next to an opening, like a door or a staircase, which you could open normally when not in boarding.. If you understand
About the build13, it was because i forgot to install it on top of build 12.1 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Works fine now

one thing that has helped me in the past when potc with build is acting up is going into the potc folder and running the "runme" batch file again. Sometimes that fixes stuff. I guess you already fixed it though.

Still trying to find me a brigantine. I'm testing out putting the model for the packet brig for the brigantine (I like the packet brig's hull much better)
