Town Annexation

Landlubber
Anybody know if the AI will Annex towns in time of war? Or `re-annex` towns that you have captured?

Or is Annexation only for players?

When you take a town, you normally have to wait for garrison from the nearest town to get there before taking off if in enemy waters.

I had Port Royale taken by the Spanish ... bah!

I don't the exact ratio of pirates vs. soldiers but it seems like if you have them with more than 2 to 1 and they number less than 100 - it's a good chance that you will be asked to install a government - but that was beta, your mileage may very.

Thanx for the info! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

In the beta it was if they had less than a hundred men you would storm the fort. Typically a town that is barely surviving is ripe for the picking. If a town gets the opportunity to install a new governor and garrison you normally have to repeat blasting them to hell again.

I took the Floriday keys from the French last night. I believe it was categorized as a poor French village. I beat the pants off of them because it was my first land battle and I took way more men than I needed. After I installed a Dutch governor, its wealth skyrocketed to something like "Wealthy Dutch Village". Governors seem to increase the wealth of a city whether it is captured or whether a governor is sent there peacefully aboard a ship. Or perhaps this was random? Ah well. At least I had a decent base of operation in the Northern Carribean from which I could harrass those Spanish treasure ships out of Havana. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

For Land Battles -

You get a choice of where you want to plot your men down ... Try to put them as close to the jungle as possible (when it exists).

Your musketeers are valuable in there.

Try to use a single group of pirates as your scouts ... basically you want to hear the horn go off, signaling an advance by the enemy. They will come your way, so just end all turns until within range of your musketeers - you can make it out of a ton of fights that may seem out of your league this way.

I would add another point or two.

With your pirates or officers, it's good to have an advantage in elevation. Of course, the jungles privide cover from guns (and if I recall, even better protection from cavalry!) but you don't want to be attacked by native tribes in their element. Your movement is also slower in jungles. I like to keep my gunners outside the jungles where they can line up and shoot at anything that comes close. But they can also shoot from the edge of the jungle without penalty (with the bonus of partial cover from enemy fire). Just don't get attacked by foot troops.

The new combat system is really pretty good. I was surprised that they added something I first saw in my `Role-Playing` game days (mainly Rolemaster), which was bonuses for attacking from an opponent's flank, etc. It really makes the land battles quite strategic and not just a matter of `out-numbering` your opponents.

btw, this is my first post here. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

When I annex a town, and have the option of installing a new governor, he takes his office that second without hesitation, I don'T have to wait for him to arrive. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Well drunen, i think they meant more like you should wait for a new transport to arrive to reinforce ypur newly taken town. the governors ARE there as soon as you put em in, but if you install a new governor and sail off leaving the town defenseless...well...youll enjoy retaking it again im sure.
