I have noticed that for a while now the chance of getting both leather and chocolate in your hold is not that high. You frequently are landed with just the leather (especialy with the smaller starting ships) and that it not too good money wise and makes it hard to get started (espsialy if you have set a low starting cash in Bs.h or dont know what you are doing). Is it possible to make the chocolate take precidence over the leather when the goods for your ship is selected?

To make money I usually just instigate tavern brawls and kill the participants......basically when a person at a table doesn't want to gamble you just keep bugging him until a brawl ensues...not very realistic...but it helps when starting out...just make sure you are well stocked on potions if you don't have the toughness trait...although...I have no idea how drastic the reduction if toughnesses effectiveness is yet...I played for about 25 minutes...got killed like 200 xp short of rank 3 due to stupidity...starting a fight when not having any medications......I may try again later...I know before though when you get to rank 3 the difficulty of the game gets alot easier due to the toughness trait....I hope the effectiveness of it got reduced actually because it makes potions and the like totally obsolete except to give to your officers the way it was.......

there's a dungeon and a cave on the island as well. just loot 'em and your fine for a while.

I didn't mean I was having trouble. It was just a suggestion to make it easier for people new to our beloved build

I agree with fudge dragon. While it's dead easy to make all the money you'll ever need for an experienced player, a new player won't even have enough to repair his ship.

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYERS <!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> have a hard enough time just figuring out the game. <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYERS <!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> don't need to get stuck without enough money to repair their ship. Oh, and did I mention <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYERS<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->? I wasn't sure I had. The tutorial was balanced so that a <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER <!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> would be able to figure out the game.

Of course, once you've played through the tutoral 237 times, you forget what it was like to be a <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> who needs all the help he can get. I mean, I can make a quick 20K gold with a single trip through the dungeon. But I couldn't do that when I was a <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->.

Let's go easy on the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->, shall we? Oh, and don't forget about the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->s either!

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Hook,
I'm not having a go at NEW Players!!!!!!
Just the older ones, as soon as one hints about cheats,
there follows outrage! Lets face it, some of us like it!
I've learned very early to reset values since the Stock game,
and played more than 237 times!!!.... No offence taken!!!
... and I don't like to start with such a stingy amount!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Hey Nosie! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I wasn't having a go at anyone in particular. It's just that both fudge dragon and I mentioned <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYERS<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> and I wasn't sure anyone had caught it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

The last thing I remember, someone wanted to randomize the starting goods, which seemed like a good idea to me at the time. Next thing I know, we're not getting enough to get a ship repaired during the tutorial. If I'd known that was going to happen, I'd have complained about it.

I remember how hard it was to make money when I was a <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->. After a while I'd learned a few tricks and it was no longer a problem. But there are a lot of people who complained about how easy it was to make money in the game. Sure it's easy, once you get some experience. But I don't believe in penalizing <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYERS<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> right off the bat.

I also don't believe it should be necessary for the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> to cheat just to get through the tutorial properly. And I don't consider it a cheat to give the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> the same amount of money he got before all the mods changed it either. I may be in the minority on that one, though.

I just wanted to make sure the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NEW PLAYER<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> didn't get left behind. Also, I didn't want him to have to cheat.

I hope all this made sense. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> You got my vote, Hook!
Should be at least a toggle, so Pirates have a choice!
I used to go to the moneylender in the stockgame
and did not pay it back! You know, what that does!
It turnes you into Horror of the Seas! But, I learned
very quickly!!! Realistic Sailing is another one, but at least
one can toggle that one!!! So, dont you modders dare to
touch that one, or I come sailing up your river and blast you!!
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

nonsense! i have never EVER had any problem with repairing my ship with the money gained from selling the goods ( and ONLY the goods ) and i have tried every ship that can be chosen. never had any problem at all with any of them, even after i had hired a crew and bought a new spyglass. (as i have always done those two things before selling the goods and repairing my ship) although i wouldn't mind a bit extra cash from selling the stuff. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I don't know why is, sometimes you get both goods and easily enough money to start off and other times you end up with a minuscule amount of Leather and find yourself 4k down on ship repair costs. I'm not suggesting a complete overhaul just some extra code in the tutorial that makes maclom hand you some additional cash if he detects that you are not going to have enough to repair your ship. Experienced players can just tell Malcolm that the don't need his help at the port and for them nothing changes.

thanks for the support hook

I have never actually ran into not having enough to repair the ship...I have run into situations when you are extremely poor after doing so (less than 500 gold).....I will concur that for New Players it may be beneficial to start with a little extra cash...so why not just start the default cast to 2000 instead of 1000? I have played from the start MANY times...(I restart whenever I get killed...so I rarely make it past the search for Rheims). I will admit....it stinks getting stuck with a load of Leather....why can't the resale value for Leather be upped?

Also.....I was thinking....when monkey's die....why not just have them carry a few objects instead of getting the Leather...it doesn't make sense that you get 2 tonnes of Leather (and the means to get it back to your cargo hold no less) or somesuch for each monkey killed hehe........

not to mention that they don't have any skin. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

anyway, as i said, i wouldn't mind the extra cash, although i don't need it. i just said that i never had a problem with it.

Strange. When I coded the part where cargo is initially loaded on ship I thought I made sure that player get enough starting money to pass whole tutorial... I'll try to check it again.

pirate_kk! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> finally! this might be off topic, but could you check on your rewrite for the captains cabin? there are some problems with it. i'll PM them.

Last thing I knew was that there is some code that should make sure that you get enough cargo to finish the tutorial. However I can indeed confirm that that code doesn't always work right. I don't remember who made thel ast rewrite of that code: It was either Pirate_KK or Maximus. In any case: I am not in the position to do anything about it anymore. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
