Need Help Tweaking the Ascold quest

Guys, I'm playing vanilla but trying to make a fair ground for the Ascold quest. Lets be honest, boarding 10 Man of Wars and standing afloat is just plain impossible. Could you please give me any tips to reduce the ship number without bugging the ship log that is needed to generate to continue the quest?
