Two MOD Ideas

Hi all
Just had a couple of ideas id like to share for a new mod

1) Crew Health- In battle some men are killed, some survive unharmed and some are injured. Is there not a way we can introduce injured crewmen to the game? Lets say after a battle a portion of the crew gets injured and they have to be nursed back to health (perhaps this can include a new ability like DOCTOR, or a new officer like SHIPS DOCTOR) in the same way you can repair the hull and sails after a battle.

2) Has anyone heard of the `64-pound` carronade used on battleships back in the days of Victory? They used to be filled with mainly grapeshot and could qipe out huge portions of an enemies crew. Is there some way of integrating that into the game?

THanks for your time

I really like that first idea*, and I've wondered about surgeons before... I think a formal naval vessel would of course had a surgeon, but pirates may have had their galley cook double as sawbones.

Similiar to battle damage to crew, I'd like to see diseases - they get scurvey without fruit, shore leave gets them a few rowdy diseases _down there_, a voodoo hex...

* crew in general are treated as so shamefully disposible... the game really does just treat them as mere numbers. Gotta have so many min or max, let the superfluous numbers drown... you never learn their names or anything! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Nathan what did you do to become so smart about all the mods and stuff you, Cat, CCC, and captian are the most brialent people i know. What did you guys do to become so great at this? I must know <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

First, I'm no expert nor some superhuman UberModder, but thanks all the same for the confidence. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
--And for me, the actual `application-making` side of coding, or the artistry of good texturing, are amazing in turn.

How'd I get here?
Um...I took a couple courses in C programming some years ago (which helped me understand POTC"s scripting language because it's near C), and I've had a ton of free time on my hands to just pour through all the script files.
Nothing but persistance and practice, really. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
It's the time that helps most of all, IMO.

I keep discovering new things, or learning that what I thought for a long time was wrong, nearly every day with POTC. It's a learning process, a lengthy, occasionally frustrating but usually fun, learning process.

I'm good at texturing because of my art background, I guess.

I'm a real duffer at this coding stuff tho, `self-taught`, basically - stemming from some modifications that I did (trial and error) to an existing perl script for a website (I make websites). Regarding learning PotC modding code, I credit my own sheer bullheadedness along with some of the fine people here who prodded me towards success with clues and encouragement when I got stuck. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> (thank you!) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ty" border="0" alt="flower.gif" /> Since I learned from them, I am happy to help pass along the knowledge. After all, somebody's got to share in this mania, it's no fun being obsessed all alone! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <!--`QuoteBegin-Orias`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Orias)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I must know <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />[/quote] Heh brings to mind that exchange between "the man in black" (Westley) and Inigo in the movie "Princess Bride" -

<b>I:</b> Who <i>are</i> you?

<b>W:</b> No one of consequence...

<b>I:</b> I must know!

<b>W:</b> Get used to disappointment.

Heh... Fun movie. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks for the compliment... I'm only too happy to help where I can. Since we all have differing areas of expertise, I think we strike a good balance in problem solving and innovative mods. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Speaking of which, thank you to you and FB and whoever others who, with your constant references, forced by curiosity alone (it came so highly recommended) to watch that movie. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Excellent pic; I just watched it again this afternoon while having "brunner" (breakfast, lunch, and dinner all at one sitting).

Interestingly, the little sloop Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo sail in with Buttercup to the Cliffs of Insanity, has a <i>tiller</i> for steering. I noticed that again, in the watching, and thought of all the modelers here wanting a good example of a small ship with a tiller. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Yeah, actually if you look real close at the tartane models, you'll see one there too. Now if we just changed the lateen for a lugsail, maybe, it'd be the spitting image.
(unless that thing in the movie had a squaresail, I can't recall)

I made a Westly skin ages ago, and a less successful Inigo that I may redo... And I have a mixed/resized model for the giant (was that Fezzik? One of my favourite movies but it's been a while), and some source photos but I haven't taken time to make the skin yet. Then I'll round out the group with Princess Buttercup and that short guy who drank poison, and maybe that villain whatshisname, and then make it public.

Their little sloop had a cabin and a deck above it from where Inigo was steering the ship via this rudder.

Alan, you mean the `six-fingered` man? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Tyrone, or Count Rugen. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />
