Useless things?

nem

Inspired by the suspicions in another thread that the pistols don't really seem to have an effect in battle I'd like to mention a few other features which don't really seem to work for me. If you noticed one of those things having an actual effect on gameplay, please tell which, when and how.

- Sailmaker: never noticed my sails getting repaired at sea
- Carpenter: ditto (lazy bum)
- as mentioned already, pistols: two new animations before a fight, but apart from that?
- not really in this league, but since I started a new game I always get the same fight scene when at sea - in the first game the scene would differ (sometimes starting at the aft of the ship, sometimes in the middle), but now it's always near the bow of the ship, up the stairs and down falls the enemy... essentially the same setting as with the top ten pirates and Raymondo. Pretty dull. Anyone knows what to do about that?

Lol nem, I know what you mean.
Also what does the spyglass do (apart from giving you a close up view)? Does it give you anymore information other than what's available already?

Pistols DO have an effect. It determines your starting position. Meaning that if you fire off two pistols at your enemy (which you automatically do at the beginning of most sword fights) you actually start about 2 thrusts ahead of where you normally would. Your opponent is a few steps closer to falling down the stairs, if that makes sense.

I have not done any lab testing on the carpenters though. I'll have to check hull damage after a battle and then sail around a bit and see if it ever goes down.

Also, I think the fight scene varies by nationality. When I started attacking English ships, I tended to get the port to starboard fight instead of the stern to bow fight... though it might differ per ship too. If all I do is attack the Spanish, which is usually the case, I tend to see the same ones more often as they use the same ships maybe... Dunno, just a hunch.

I think the position of the battle depends on something if you have a large chance of winning. "/ It's just a thought but I have the feeling that when I fight on the front of a ship it's easier for the enemy to beat me then the other way around.

Nope, definitely not. Neither are they determined by the part of the enemy ship you hit when boarding. Tested that already as well. Thanks for the heads up on the pistols though.

Xa4: the spyglass special items (I guess you mean those) let you zoom out farther in sail view.

Capn. Toast is right about the pistols. I noticed the better starting position too.

I think I once noticed the carpenter/sailmaker reducing my damage sailing after a fight.

Yeah most fight scenes are pretty the same. They differ in the background, with your crew fighting the other ships crew. After watching the same animation 50times I get bored of it and which I could turn it off.

That's just the point: they used to not be the same. There are at least three different ones for fencing on ships: starting at the aft (that's where you slide down the stairrail after the first few slashes), one in the midsection, where you and your opponent move from starboard to port and one near the bow, where you fight your way up a stair, which is what I'm getting exlcusively lately. (And with lately I mean for the past three days...)

There are three duel scenes onboard ships:

- <b>Fighting from port to starboard.</b> The enemy falls overboard if you beat him in the swordfight. You retreat up to a plank and escape the duel by doing a backflip and diving into the water if you lose.
- <b>Fencing from deck to aft (helm area).</b> Most common one, enemy also falls overboard if you beat him. If you lose, the last enemy attack pushes you against a door, and are quickly surrounded by enemy sailors, your foe pointing his sword at you, grinning.
- <b>Squaring off from prow to deck.</b> The enemy falls on burning deck planks, his arm's cloth catches on fire and he jumps overboard as he can't put out the flames by waving the burning material. I *think* you fall overboard if the captain beats you in this scene, but since I haven't lost in these type of duel so far, I wouldn't know.

Yea. Repeating what I described doesn't get me to the other two scenes though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Sorry, I was typing when you replied with almost the same thing I did. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Perhaps someone could mod a better "randomalisation" (Is that a word? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> )

What I meant was not so much nationality so much as ships you are more likely to engage in combat with, depending on who you are at war with. Like a Trade Galleon gives you the burning embers, or a pirate hunter in a brig might give you the up the stairs and falling off the back... I notice that when I attack spanish ships only, I tend to see much of the same (becuase the Spanish don't use brigs or merchantmen etc...) but when I switch sides and attack someone else, the scenery changes, like Indiamen and brigs etc... make sense? Again, this is just a gut - I have not paid enough attention to be sure.

<!--`QuoteBegin-nem`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(nem)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- Sailmaker: never noticed my sails getting repaired at sea
- Carpenter: ditto (lazy bum)
Definitely work for me. They even fix other ships in your fleet. Just that i might take a week to see any huge difference. So, yeah, they do something, just nothing super fast.

<!--`QuoteBegin-nem`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(nem)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- as mentioned already, pistols: two new animations before a fight, but apart from that?
Okay, let's take the up the stairs duel for example. Normally it would take three slashes before the enemy would fall on the stairs and move up. With one pistol it takes only two slashes and with two pistols it takes only one slash. So, yeah, there is a benefit from them.

As for the different fight positions, don't know what to tell you there. I get all three of them pretty evenly. But then, I normally board a ship from wherever I can too.

Sorry Captain Shadow, I've got an extremely sore throat and am a bit touchy today. Not a good day to be posting, I gues, but what can you do when a cold got you down. Should've looked at the post times. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Toast, I attacked different nations and very different ships in the most recent game - still mostly one scene. But I'll try again, thanks for the hints.

Otaku: so how much do they fix in a week? 3%? It's just that when I got my ship really shot up (smoke, holes and everything) I never see things getting better (holes and smoke disappearing) no matter how long I sail... I haven't compared the perentage values though, I'll do that next time.

This boarding issue is really annoying, since a game with repetitive tasks doesn't become more entertaining when suddenly certain scene versions disappear...

Hey, are you guys forgetting about the one where you throw your sword at the enemy, he dodges and then advances toward you. You just cross your arms and smile as your sword hits and cuts a rope causing a huge box to swing down and either knock him off the ship, or he dodges and starts to advance toward you and the box swings back and gets him anyway. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

That's not a normal fight scene, that's the fights with the top ten pirates. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> A third version BTW is: he jumps onto the box, swings to the left, laughs and spins his sword above his head til he suddenly and accidentally cuts the rope which holds the box. Splosh. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-nem`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(nem)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Otaku: so how much do they fix in a week? 3%?
Yeah. Something small like that. The only time I really noticed it was after running through a storm which I do alot because of the major speed boost they give me. About a week later I pulled into a port and there was no damage to repair on any of my ships except for the last two of my six. And it was like 1% each.

Normal, smormal its a fight scene. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

I have never seen the one you describe above. LOL That has got to be funny. I hope I will see it eventually. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Yea, but no random fight scene. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Seems the one I described is the most rare. I only get it once out of the ten prates, maximum.

Just when I thought I shelled out my money for nothing over the pistols, great observation. Now I got a new one for ya, How about the Flare and that mirror?

I might be wrong, but its something minor I noticed, if you have the mirror or flare and escorting a ship (govenor etc) and you pass by a friendly ship, they seem to swing about and tag along for a very short time then sail off again.
