I'm a big O'Brian fan and swiller of good rum. Being a Bristol lad I've always had a passion for the sea and I was lucky enough to work on the SS GreatBritain rennovation as a schoolboy. Anyway, PotC caught my eye a week ago, £5.99 in Morrisons. Bargain. The last game of this type I'd played was the ancient but excellent Corsairs' Gold.

My first impressions were that the menus and controls are amongst the worst I've seen and that the porting from the X Box had been very lazily done. The next thing that struck me was that the on shore combat was weak, although I've come to quite like it now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> However, once I put to sea I was amazed by the incredible fluid modelling, probably the best I've seen in any game engine, the excellent light effects and the tension and realism of the ship to ship combat. All this meant I was hooked and prepared to overlook a wide array of flaws.

Playing through the plot at a reasonable speed I realised how incredibly buggy it is and I finally finished with the standard game after a bug rescuing Claude from Greenford saw me locked in the prison forever. Ah well, at least I had Danielle for company, although she seemed to have developed a bit of a mood and wouldn't talk to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

At this point I was miffed that a game with such potential was so annoyingly flakey and was on the point of uninstalling the thing and leaving it to gather dust of a shelf. But then I thought I'd give the build 12 pack a go. I normally can't be bothered with mods e.g. for things like GTA VC, but having read some descriptions of what had been done in PotC I was intrigued. Suffice to say that I'm very impressed with the work that's been done, the mods are well considered, in keeping with the spirit of the piece and make a HUGE difference to the overall playability and quality of the game. Many thanks and much praise to those involved, you've done a quality job. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Welcome aboard mate.stock version is buggy to be sure, but I overlooked as well when I'd be first playing this marvelous game because of the potential for modding. Two years plus later I'm still playing this game and enjoy it because of all the hard work done by many talened and dedicated modders <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
