Wanna know who the REAL pirates are?

alan_smithee

Corsair
Storm Modder
The REAL pirates, I'm finding, are le government Quebecois and their notion to raise tuition for foreign students, who already pay 10x more than natives. Rotten French pirates in stripey shirts and berets, swingin' their `sword-like` loaves of bread...

Sorry, a `non-sequiter`. As appropros PotC, I finally got my computer fixed and the game installed, so I can FINALLY playtest B11.99, AND give you guys what mods I have finished (characters, mostly; too late for B12 but I want to make what I've been working on for so long available), AND keep working on my own projects. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Ahoy Alan, wunderd what 'append tew ye mate, glad tew 'ear ye got things squared away, welcome back <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Abd why should foreing student should pay less, when many natives rush to find the money to pay their own college or university grades?

I'm from Quebec... hehe

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> Alan, WB! Glad to hear your computer is no longer ailing - and that you're ready to get back to the real business at hand - making the archipelago fun for all of us weasely black hearted piratey types! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> One would think the Quebecois would be proud and pleased to know that foreign students think so much of their educational skills that they want to attend their universities... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

I'll start with the salient point, my own reaction to the `Build-in`-Progress, which I playtested all night last night:

The new title screen thingy, with the ships and sword and coins, is phenomenal. Who's the artist? And have I correctly perceived new ship models, with different mast configurations? Or has it just been that long since I played? (Man, I missed that music. Puts me in the mood for a hot sandy beach of adventure and a pina colada.)

A couple glitches I ran into was the autosave feature only produces a "bad save," for me, and the game pretty much hangs when I try and auto load. And quite an odd thing commonly happens because of the `side-step` feature (and it took me the longest time to figure out why this was happening), namely the `side-stepping` through walls and objects and into `mid-air`. Maybe it's not such a big problem, since you can simply NOT use the feature, but I'd accidentally set up "step left" as the same key for stabbin', so I kept going all over the place during fights and getting myself stuck in a wall or "outside" a house.

I also find myself looking really hard for the new features, but maybe I'm just too used to the mods that've been coming out here and there over the past few months. Great to see the blacksmith... but it looks like I'll have to finish my work of putting one on each island, inside buildings instead of standing on the beach, for inclusion in a later build.

Also haven't explored the islands much yet, to see how much they've been expanded... but I'd still really like to see the existing space used more, like all the empty houses. Redmond, for one, is barely `half-capacity`.

Oh, and how did that `playing-after`-`the-end`-`of-the`-game business finish up? Do we get rid of Danielle or make her mortal or wed her or what? Is the service held in the temple on Khael Roa? And -- I should actually play before I ask this, but -- can you visit the temple before its proper place in the game, or did someone fix it so it's closed off till then?

Anyway, I'll keep playing and we'll see what happens.

And for something completely different:
The Quebecois have an odd relationship with foreigners. Psychologically, it's the mirror or framing effect or whatever you wanna call it, where a group that perceives itself as a repressed minority will treat some other, even smaller and more helpless group the same way. Hell, it's the "little brother picking on an even littler brother" schtick. The last time a vote for Referendum (separation and soverighnty) failed (by about 1%), the leaders blamed it on the foreigners living here.

(And I'm not saying we should pay less than native students, dHerblay; but I'd like to pay less than I do now, not more. I'm assured most Quebecois students have no trouble pulling together the $1k or so a year it costs, and anyway they get more government subsidy for school than prety much anyone else anywhere else. Let the `powers-that`-be here spend

<!--`QuoteBegin-alan_smithee`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin--> And have I correctly perceived new ship models, with different mast configurations?
Yup. New ships with different masts AND different guns... The ReadMe will explain, once we have the final Build 12 release.

I think that was NathanKell's mod, he'll have to advise you on that one...

<!--`QuoteBegin-alan_smithee`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(alan_smithee)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I also find myself looking really hard for the new features,
Not everything has been added, as a lot of the people who were working on them simply got too busy (apparently) to be here often - or had computer troubles, or `what-have`-you... We'll hopefully catch up to them soon - and it'll be easier to implement new mods as long as we have the CVS server to work with - what a wonderful thing DCHaley did for us, with that! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Do we get rid of Danielle or make her mortal or wed her or what? Is the service held in the temple on Khael Roa?
ROTFL!!! My Danielle/Clement fix is indeed in the new build - you have a conversation with Clement onshore before you cast off to beat the Black Pearl, and he asks you to take him home. When you drop him off at the lighthouse after the battle, he is off of your officers list and open for more quests should someone decide to do that - I know there were plans to expand his house a bit - make a "secret lab" for his inventions... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Danielle you take to Redmond - Rocky Shore - and there you talk. Then you go into town to turn in Silehard and get your reward, and you have a final chance to either turn Danielle loose or keep her as part of your crew. You also have the chance, should you decide to keep her on, to have her continue being immortal, or become mortal...

I rather like the dialog I put together - it goes well with the rest of the feel of their dialogs - and if you decide to let her go, she walks off - if you follow her she eventually fades away... Lovely to see, if you were tired of her conniving! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Actually, I tried going there early in the game just to check it out.
I found I was stuck inside the inner temple ... until I used the "side step" keys mentioned above, to get to a safe section of the outer temple.

I was then able to backtract out of the temple and then walk out and back to the beach. I was able to get back to my ship normally and sail on to finish the main quest.

I think sidestep can also be used to get some nice screen shots!

Aye! Fred Bob had fun `side-steppin`' around in de Incan Temple jus' as ye say thar, Petros! Ye kin git in some great freefall sichyations! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Hey, Alan, welcome back!

Regarding sidestep: yes on all counts. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
It's a screwy feature. I don't understand how POTC collision detection works, or even if we can access it from scripts, so for sidestep I totally, well, sidestepped it.
I'm very uncomfortable with sidestep as a feature for the very reasons you say; but so many people had asked for one over the last year and a quarter that I figured, well, it's worth a go. You can always set the amount to 0 in BS.h to turn it off.

Perhaps 0 should be the _default_?

Naw, it be fine fer now, matey! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yep, I vote to leave it as it is, too! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I three vote to keep sidestep in.
Otherwise, how would we ever see things like this?

<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/184290.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

... or this?
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/184303.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Hee hee... Good one! Capt. Petros, we've got a whole wonderful thread, started by Fred Bob, devoted to "Nutty Thangs Ye Kin Do in PotC" - <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic1808.php" target="_blank">check it out,</a> I have a feeling you're going to fit in there quite well! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I really gotta be careful with sidestep, yeah. I keep setting it to keys used for other functions. At least the "logs on/off" toggle is less harmful than the stab key. And now that I know how to use it, it can be useful. I'll hafta try it to dodge in a fight. You can change the size of the step, yeah?

And can the sailto mod be toggled off? It bugs me sometimes not being able to "sail to" a ship I need to sink, like in a pirate hunting assignment. It's happened once or twice that I'm not allowed to zip right to him, but have no other way of finding just where he is...

Re: KR, I got inside the circle of rock but there was no option to land at the shore. So all I could do was leave. But THEN when I went to map mode, my ship was still inside the circle of rock, unable to get out. So I hadda go back into sailing mode and maneuver out of the circle... without once setting foot on the island. What am I missing?

I'll try and play to the end this time, by the way; haven't actually done that more than once in all my time playing the game.

And lastly, boarding: I seem to remember a mod for different starting positions for yourself and crew, like so you could all rush over at once, and I thought it would be in the build.

And is it a new option or simply a glitch to "exit cabin" during boarding, thus aborting the whole operation? I didn't think pirates retreated...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I thought that "exit cabin" brought you to the next fighting deck. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

No, it completely restarts the whole boarding action, as the game thinks that when you're boarding, you are in the cabin, so you can exit anytime. But since the two ships are so close, they will board you again... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
