Weird Graphics Troubles...

Hiya...


Well, I'm playing POTC with the build 12.1 + modpack + September update of the modpack & I'm having some weird graphical issues. My graphics system is a RADEON X700 SE and I've already updated to the Catalyst 5.10 drivers, but this hasn't helped at all. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

First issue: weird colored triangles suddenly pour out of the textures, sometimes in the same color as the texture and sometimes in different colors. Specially in the 3d map, but also in some towns/ outside of towns.

Second issue: suddenly, in the middle of a sea battle, the smoke clouds from cannons disappear all in a sudden rather than smoothly fade as usual. They are produced... stand for a second... and disappear.

Third issue, really weirdo: my screen goes jet black, the display blackouts & there's no way to recover it... I guess the computer isn't frozen, but he graphics system is in a total irrecoverable shutdown. Hi Bill. It´s nice to see you here. I am playing the newest version ot the game and I have no difficulties with graphic now. But in previous version I had strange difficulties sometimes when Nathaniel suddenly started to fly above the ground in the space and headed somewhere. But with this newest version this my graphical difficulties disappeared. I would recommend you to abandon your game and to install the newest version and play new game. I think this newest version is better then previous ones. I've already started a new game now that I've got soem udnerstanding of it, but the graphic problems continue. Pity the graphic issues, specially the one with the total blackout...

Hi, Bill. My son Gerge wanted so as I would buy some Radeon card because he likes them but I always have very good experiences with GeForce cards so I bought GF 6600 GT in the end although it is probably slower than your Radeon X700. I heard from several places the GF cards are more compatible for various games than Radeon cards. And after you install Build 12.1 you should started the file RunMe.bat in the main directory which is for European version and only after that install Modpack. And after all the installation the first thing you should do is pushing the control button for default adjusting of keys and only then start to adjust the keys by your taste. They are small issues but maybe they can influence anything in the game too. And I have Win XP and I am playing it without any compatibility. But I just reminded one thing. If you have installed new Islands so there are some bugs yet and sometimes I am meeting the sudden black screen too. It just happened to me by Gadeloupe yesterday. If this black creen appears to you in close distance to some new island it is rather matter of some bug or imperfection in this mod and it is not probably caused by your card. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

You can try updating to the most recent modpack version available through Pieter's Pirates Page (link in my signature). The latest update is the 24 October release. However, the update will only work on the 2 October update, so you might need to redownload all of it again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

If you encounter a black screen, it is probably because of a bug in the game somewhere. Can you tell us when it happens? What you were doing at the time? Also: You probably won't have to restart your computer. Whenever I encounter a black screen, I can still press F1 to open the main menu and either load a savegame or quit the game.

Rad, I already followed the installation procedures... I think it may be some kind of trouble with the Catalyst configuration. As you told me that the Islands didn't worked well yet, I haven't downloaded them.

Pieter, I've been suggested that the blackout problem could be related to power management... I'm testing to play with it disabled as I've encountered blackouts during long sea battles, so maybe this triggered the power saving... anyway, it should be recovered just moving the mouse, I think, rather than totally shiut down the graphics.

What is more annoying are the weird triangles coming out of the textured objects. Anyway I'll try to get the latest updates.


PS: I already have it updated to the 10/2 version. I'll download the 10/24 update pack.

Have you tried pressing F1 or F2 when you experience a black screen? I reckon that, with a bit of luck, the main menu migth show up anyway. Hi again...


Well, this time it's good news: I've got to fix the troubles I was experiencing... it was a hardware issue! The fan on the X700 wasn't working and so when it warmed up the graphics would go to hell... now Fujitsu Siemens has replaced my graphics card for a new one (at home, and for free! Now that's what I call a Warrant...), and the game graphics work 10/10 even at 1280 x 960. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Hi Bill. I like the PoTC graphics too, especially the sunsets on the sea and all the sea waves and sea level´s flashing. For that reason I am able to play this game many times...... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> And just now I playing Russian AlexuB Add-On and this is further great experience for me. hey bill ive found that useing the old interface helps toleagthen the time between blackouts i went from blackouts every 5 minutes to every 2 hours <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> cheers to the hours i speantdoing this <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> to figure that and many more problems out
