This `mini-review` is going to be all over the place so be prepared..
The 150 page spiral bound manual is one of the best and informative manuals I have read since Neverwinter Nights (also spiral bound btw). Kudos to Sid for remembering that we enjoy a nice thick manual to read at bedtime!!!!
I just wanted to say that this is truely a classic game. There is a lot in here. At first glance you may think it is just a remake but there is a lot of depth in this game.
There's an `in-game` menu called the `Pirate-o`-pedia. This is a glossary for everything in the game. There is so much useful content and great pictures in here that I spent an hour reading through it last night. Great stuff. Reminds me of the `Civ-opedia` from the great Civilization games. Darn, SID RULES!!!
I love the quest interface and the map interface is to die for.
The land battles are awesome. They are turn based, which makes them even more impressive in that you have to think about your strategy. There are certain advantages to being in trees and mountains where your troops get defense bonuses, etc.
The sea battles are off the charts. As fun as it can get. The real time battle damage is great. Much like Age of Mythology, you see tiny little men litterally flying off of a ship as you bombard it with your artillery. Its pure action excitement to see an explosion followed by men and wood debris flying through the air. Or see your canonball land short, then sink underwater..
My only gripe so far is that the "chase cam" is VERY taxing on your computer. Expect framerates under 25 fps. The good news is that the default camera is better anyway.
I have put away POTC and really dont have a need to play it.
More later..
