You did the whole fight the suitor, then go back to her and marry thing?

The reason I ask is because the dialogue you are getting is (while NOT Married), what happens when you tell the lady you are courting, that you are not good enough for her or the sea calls and you must go or something like that!

Then you never get another chance to propose to her.

This really is a fantasy game, I get "reacquainted" with both my wife and one of my mistresses, and her father or uncle is in the room while I'm doing it.
