What are the consequences if you enter enemy town and are discovered?

That's it - as the topic says. I presume I can escape but what next? And actually how many guards are there? Is it possible to kill all the guards or they are unlimited and going up in strength as the skeletons? And may this be used for training?

As I know guards respawn unless you destroy fort and "board" the town.
I know they respawn for me.
You'll eventualy get overwhelmed.
If you kill guards reputation with their country will decrease towards a bigger bounty.
If you realy need to enter town go any pirate tavern and reconcile with that nation and buy trader licence.

during the day the guards' respawn rate is unlimited.but during the night you can actually kill them all.though killing the guards will give you no option but to just leave the town because you can't do much there coz nobody will speak with you unless you reentered the town
again

Only for a few days, maybe a week. I attack the guards in spanish towns just to raise skills, after some time goes by I can always sneak in again and things are normal.

Actually this seems kind of exploit... just killed 3 waves of guards and they don't seem to get strongers as the skeletons (after the 4th wave the skeletons are helluva fighters <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> ) So it seems
you can kill guards the whole night and gain lots of skills providing you have some pots for the fighters...

when you go to the gate to leave there should be a group of guards spawned next to it. Those do seem to get stronger and more numerous the more guards you kill.

This makes sense... But still killing guards seems the best way to train - much better then killing the skeletons simply because there is not enough space in the caves/grottos and the favorite way to die of the fighters is one of them to fight 3 skeletons at once untill the other just run on one place <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
