What does the F12 Console do??

I have pressed the F12 button within & without the game. The ONLY thing I have seen is a "console activated" temp. appear in the upper left corner of the screen. NOTHING else. So what does it do???

By default, indeed it DOESN'T do anything. It executes whatever code you put into PROGRAM\console.c .
All code is outcommented in the normal game, but when you active stuff, you can use the console for EVERYTHING.

The console is very useful once one learns what it can do. I just recently started working in COAS, which does not have a console, and am having a very hard time.
