What happened? I'm a Bloody Terror

gonzo914

Landlubber
I've been happily knocking around bumping off pirates for various governors, collecting acres and promotions, and talking pretty to several governors' daughters and nieces, and all of a sudden, I'm a Bloody Terror and a Dreaded Pirate. I haven't blown off a loan shark (never borrowed any money). I haven't killed anyone other than on the pirate ships I boarded or some French soldiers when I snuck into Oxbay or some street ruffians that atacked me first. And I haven't missed a payroll. I've been gettig steady promotions from the English the portuguese and the Dutch. I've been the very model of privateer decorum, but my rep tanked, and by the time I noticed, I was a Bloody Terror.

And here's something odd -- merchants and shipbuilders still deal with me.

Any ideas what I might have done to merit this?

Ooops, almost forgot -- I might have sacked Falaise once. But only once.

Gonzo914,
It looks like you have ideed been a model of piratey-ness, and after reading over what you haven't done that has caused people problems in the past, the only thing I can think of is have your officers ever attacked anyone? You mentioned the street ruffians, I've seen it occur, and I'm not mentioning and names, *cough *Fred Bob *cough, where one of my officers will "accidently" hit a guard when one of those street fights break out. What are your officer's current reputations?

Regarding the whole Falaise misunderstanding, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> were you neutral with them before you attacked? I think the game starts out with the French hostile to you, but I've seen it where their attitude goes up with you, even though you liberate Oxbay.

Will the merchants and shipbuilders at all of the ports deal with you?

Other than that, I can't think of why your rep decided to plummet. I'm pretty sure you're already aware of how to get your rep back up already, but let us know if I am mistaken, or if doing some good deeds doesn't bring it back up, and keep it up.
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks. The boys did get a little worked up in Oxbay, and they roughed up some French guards. Well, actually, they killed them. Killed several, before I could get them hustled into the tavern.

I'm pretty sure I was at war with the French when I pillaged Oxbay, as I had just sunk the ships they had blockading Oxbay. I might have captured a French ship now that I think about it. Maybe a couple. Oh, hell, I was popping those suckers off like Pez. But only when they attacked first.

Portuguese and English merchants deal with me, which kind of surprises me. They're not supposed to, are they? I'm an admiral with the English and some kind of highplaced major domo on Conceicao.

As for getting my rep back up, yep, I know how. But I may not bother. I had reached the point where I usually quit and start over anyway -- everyone is 10 in just about everything, and all the pirate ships surrender as soon as I pull alongside. I've already started over on swashbuckler, but I was curious about what I could have done so I could avoid it next time.

Nations you have rank with have a very low min rep for trading (you're 1 level above that min, I believe).
Yeah, we've got to do something about the rep bug... :\

Sometimes you might be in a smaller harbor (like Douwesen, for example) and helping the fort fight off pirates and if your aim is off and you hit the LAND your rep will PLUMMET. Doesn't matter that the land is nowhere near either the fort or the town. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I guess the conservationists really hate it when you disturb the Caribbean chicklets <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> that roost there. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Sounds like you're having fun - and if the merchants still deal with you, why worry? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

We should introduce a Good/Evil scale as well as a rep scale, because you could be a really evil person, but you never show it.

Define Evil mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />

Right. Depends on who you ask! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Oooh, oooh , I feels a song com'n on .... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

"Now take Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish all despise him,
but to the British, he's a hero, and they idolize him.
It's how you look at Buccaneers that makes them bad or good,
and I see us as members of a Nobel Brotherhood!"
Muppet Treasure Island 1994

Yeah, but say Francais Drake was a hero in the eyes of the Brittish, Rep bonus. He was despised in the eyes of the Spanish because he was enemies with them, and had done a great thing for the Brittish.

Evil: Owning slaves/ being a slave trader, Not giving beggars money, Robbing others, Killing people for no very good reason, threatening people, Turning on allies etc.

Good: Freeing slaves, Giving to the poor, Telling people if they're going to be robbed, kill bandits/ rapers etc.

You get what I'm meaning. Being a good person doesnt neccessarily mean your liked by the aristocracy and the kings.

There's a very good chance that you are spot on with this diagnosis. I was at Douwesen whuppin' pirates at the governor's request shortly before I noticed that my rep had tanked. We very well could have dusted off the plovers a bit.

Thanks to all.

Whenever the cannons "accidently" hit a ship or fort that I'm supposed to be defending, I call out, "Nice shooting Atwood! I thought you only drank when you were on shore!" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />

My only question is with all the lead flying around, how did they know it was me? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Heh, I know, they seem to know IMMEDIATELY, too! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> It's like you're shooting off monogrammed cannonballs or something! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> You're NOT shooting off monogrammed cannonballs, are you? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Well that would be tak'n scrimshaw to a whole new level! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Something I discovered taht you also have to watch the reputation of the crew you take on. I took a Rep hit by taking on a pirate, also if you watch the national alligences of the pirates that you capture if you are running Build 12.1. The allegences are not always pirate....sinking to many of one countries privateers may annoy them. That might be the reason as well. Oh yea! I was chased off my very first island due to my attitude towards a piticular nationality(Pirates)...that was waaaaaay cool. I gained a level killing everything in my path. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

You know I may have found your problem with your Rep. I had the very same thing happen and all my crew from desert me off all 4 ships except 250 on my MOW. I was a Bloody Terror in a town I was just promoted in. Hell the Portegese loved me, then I bought a aztec gold coin..... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> I was the most hated being in the game. Evereybody was running and ducking...except the store owner...heh! He wanted my money of course. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
