Ahoy Thar, Maven 1...Welcome ye aboard me hearty. Twere only my opinion, and I'm not one tew argue with me betters, but I be likin the "Frigate" fer sure. Will Outsail and out fight anything smaller than a Ship O The Line, like Two Decker's or Men-Of-War, and will hold its own with even the big ships long enough tew grapple or flee, twas what ever yer put yer mind tew. Once I get into a "Frigate" or two, I stays me hand thar! Once in awhile I like to take out a Warship (Two Decker) or a Man Of War ( 80 guns or more) just so I can blast small pirate ships tew little bits and bobs, and sails thru the cargo, easier than gettin my crew tew carry it aboard..Bahahaha!! Now a "Corvette" be a small "frigate" and alot of me fellows like em, but tew be honest, I've not laid me hands on one long enough tew say.

Bin nice talkin tew yer Matey, and maybes see you in Port somewhere, I be thinkin........But stand away from me at sea.....I'll be firin' first and the Devil was picks up the rest O the bits and Bobs, after I steams thru!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

i don't know about the best ship in game and it dep[ends on what you are planning to do with it. for chasing down other ships and blowing em out of the water/capturing them. my personal favourite is the pirate corvette. only way i ever get these is taking them from pirate owners.
if your wanting to sit off the coast and blow one of those pesky forst to bits you can't go past a good ol man of war. chuck some nice 24LB shorts on it for the reload speed and move in to a nice range. park and blast the bejesus out of that fort.

man o wars make the best for running cargo aswell. something has to be done to make other transporty type ships with bigger cargo area's

If your going for speed and power in one package there are three choices i'd recommend:
1) the frigate, super frigate or frigate MM: probably the best all round ship, its very powerful for its size <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" /> , it has 42 guns of any calibre below 32 [if you use the post build mods], and is still a resonablly fast ship.
TACTICS: its a well rounded ship, you could do alot of tactics with it, ofcourse for minimal damage, target the [BLIND SPOT] between the guns, if not that, stay at the bow or stern of the target, but if you would like to enjoy a good broadside to broadside battle, target the corvettes, caravels and pinnaces.

2) the pirate corvette: the fastest of the three, with 32 guns and 18.87 knots, its the fastest thing afloat when its hulls are empty, possibly even faster than the Black Pearl [i dont suggest you go after it in one though, you would be in a serious mess if you did].
TACTICS: it's quite a powerful ship, so long as you don't target Men Of War, you'll do fine, but you should just stay away from its port and starboard broadsides, and target the bow and stern.
The best place to get hold of one of these ships is near Falaise De Fleur, go to the french governor, and ask him for a job, he'll tell you to sink an ENGLISH Warship [it's actually a PIRATE Corvette], agree, capture it, take it for yourself, dont give it to an officer, even if he is more skilled than you [the AI tend to do very stupid things, you wouldn't want to see that Pirate corvette sink, trust me], then go back to the governor for your reward. There are only to of them in-game, but i cant remember if its in build12.1 or the post build mods.i'll put an as an alternative option if you don't have the Pirate Corvette.
downside: it can't stand up to bigger ships for long without use of the tactics.
2)[Alternative] The Corvette: nearly the same as the pirate covette, but not as fast, its the next best thing in terms of speed. try and find a really fast one in the shipyard, and buy it if you can.
TACTICS: the same as the Pirate Corvette.
downside: same as Pirate Corvette.
3)The Man Of War: The Most Powerful Ship in the game, it has 100 guns of any calibre available.
TACTICS: just sail up to anything you like and open fire!
its designed to handle broadside to broadside battles with anything.
they're good for wiping forts off the map, too.
do what you like with this ship, but make sure you have a REALLY BIG stock of ammunition, because this thing guzzles ammo like nothing else, 100 cannon balls in one all round shot!
downside: it needs a city's worth of crew, so make sure that the place you're buying it from has at least 1000 crew to fully man it, it sometimes takes up to 1050 crew to fully man a Man Of War, but usually stays around 850-950 crew.

my first choise is the super frigate, cause of its speed and manoverability. Also it has enouch capacity of crew to capture just any ship.

I bought my first frigate and captured many ships with it. Mainly ManOwars cause of they are the most expensive and have the most loot. Ships are to cheap in my opinion, its very easy to get a good ship very fast...

Me first choice would be a fast Sloop, reason being is when ye master sail'n a sloop against larger ships in battle, speed is crucial . have wind te yer back an' keep'n yer rudder to thar stern, even a MOW is no match, plus I'd be luv'n fact O' fight'n multiple deck levels to capture her <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> ,O' course if yer attack'n forts,a battleship suits me fine, MOW is even better. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The Pirate Corvette was added by Petros in the Post Build 12 mods, so it's not in Build 12. There are only two ways to get them: The first option is to do the mission from the French governor, the other option is to play the Nigel Blythe quest.

Personally like the Super Frigate and (Post Build 12) the Light Frigate 2.

To bremg: The Batavia the Dutch pride? To each your liking, I suppose. I don't like the Batavia much. The Amsterdam is, as far as I'm concerned, a much more beautiful ship. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I found that the lineship was my pick. But I had to shop around for the right one, It has almost the same
stats as the best super figate, but has a little more room in the cargo hold.

To pieter : The Amsterdam is beatifull to, you're right. Seen it alot of times, but I've seen the batavia sailing and that was much nicer to see....

I would like to see the Amsterdam sailing. Now THAT would be a sight! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />
I admit the Batavia sailing looks quite nice as well. But any old type sailing ship with sails looks nice. I just don't like her model too much... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

a nice sight to see is the kuwaiti boom in full sail, now THAT is a sight.
it looks slightly similar to the xebec or chebec.
and if anyone is looking for a book of ship designs, THE STORY of SAIL by Richard Woodman is a very nice one to have.
just for anyone who might want to specialize in making PoTC and AOP ships in the future and wants ideas.
