Where to begin?

First off I have to say I was tickled to find that PotC was not simply a fart in the wind in terms of lasting appeal. It's nice to know I'm not alone and that there's a whole community out there working to make this game even cooler. So I'd like to say hello to you all first off. Second, after lurking around the site, I have to say WOW to all the amazing things you've done with the game. I never thought the little Pirate game I like so much could DO so much. And I'm really anxious to reinstall the game and enjoy this amazing mod compilation you've made. But I'm a little confused as to where to begin. After I install the original what do I do? Which Build(s) do I need to install to have it the most up to date? I'm finding conflicting stories so I figured I should just ask. Some posts say I'll need older versions to play more up do date ones but don't say which ones? And others say I need these files and others say I only need these ones. So could someone tell me step by step what I need to do to get on the same level as everyone else. Thank you all and happy modding!

i'd recommend going to pieter's site. i'm a little confused myself, but build 13 final is the one you should be going for for now. it's build 13 and update 3 combined. installing build 12.1 first might make a difference. if you want to have a shot at it, you could try installing build 14 alpha 6 on top of that, if you want a whole load of really nice new features but don't mind a few bugs.

What difference would 12.1 make? And is there a post with all the "nce new features" in 14.6? You got me curious! I like new stuff <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> Also, can you give me a link to Pieter's site? Thanks Morgan.

here's his site:

i don't really know why, i only know that it DOES make a difference somehow. you seem to avoid a bug or two. anyway, some of the features would be more ships and characters (which is basically standard for each new build version), a better version of tortuga with a proper tortuga atmosphere added (yes, tortuga has been added, along with quite a few other islands, including cuba. but i'll leave it up to you to explore the new archipelago), access to the isla de muerte (if you manage to find the way to get there <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ), more quests, as usual, and the ability to sail from one island to the other in 3D sailing mode, which is arguably the best mod ever made for the game. the latter can also be installed on top of build 13 update 3. the files for it are on the FTP, which you can find somewhere on this forum in a stickied topic. there are more features, but i'm not sure which.

Install at least Build 13. It seems the best way to install it is:
1) <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/build12_full.zip" target="_blank">Build 12.1</a>
2) <a href="http://www.moddb.com/mods/9269/potc-build-mod/downloads/8996/potc-build-13-full" target="_blank">Build 13 Full</a>
3) <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/build13/b13_update3_full.zip" target="_blank">Build 13 Update 3</a>

You can also suffice by using <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/build13/build13_final.exe" target="_blank">Build 13 Final</a> only. If you do this, install it to a DIFFERENT folder than your game folder though. Then copy all files from the installation folder to your game folder, then run RunMe.bat. It seems that otherwise the installer won't overwrite the files in the main PotC folder, which is really quite weird. Also it is said that installing Build 12.1 before installing Build 13 *can* solve some missing loading screen/sound issues.

I recommend you enjoy Build 13 before continuing on to the Build 14 Alpha versions. Alpha 6 is said to be pretty playable, but it's still not called "Alpha" for nothing. There's several known and unknown bugs in there. Alpha 7, Alpha 7 Plus and Alpha 8 WIP 1 all are less stable then Alpha 6 and are recommended only for modpack developing and not if you just want to enjoy the game.

to add to pieter's post, adding the directsail mod manually makes build 13 almost as much fun as build 14 aplha 6.

And to add to Morgan's post again: You can download that mod <a href="http://pafiles.com/potc/ccc%20experimentals/Directsail_jan25.zip" target="_blank">here</a> and you can safely install it straight on top of Build 13.

didn't know that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> anyway, the FTP can also supply you with loads of other stuff you might need, as well as a place to store all your audio files, of course.

That link actually points to the file on the FTP. You don't need to login to be able to download from the FTP. You can just go to <a href="http://pafiles.com/potc" target="_blank">http://pafiles.com/potc</a>. For the login information required to actually put your files on the FTP, see <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10288" target="_blank">here</a>. Also you can get FTP Commander from my site in which all the proper settings have already been applied, so you can login straight away.
