Why bounty on my head?

LittleMorgan

Landlubber
Those stupid Dutch just placed a bounty on my head.
Its always them military patrols that start the fights... I know I am English and we are at war with them but I have letter of marquee and never initiate any attacks against their traders or something else at all.
So why do I get bounty for defending myself, that doesn't really make much sense...

Then you are fighting them as an english patriot and of course it will piss them off, letter of marque or not.

Any time you combat and destroy/capture a ship of another country, they will get angry with you.

There is no way around that.

There are two separate stats for your interactions with various ships. The flag of the country you are flying and your personal relations. Both are tracked separately.

But they attacked me!
Bah, how lame is that; attacking, loosing and then putting bounty on my head so that even more looser come after me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thats how it worked in the real world back then. Its REALISTIC.

Other countries didn't care if you were working under a letter of Marque, if you fought their ships and sank/destroyed/captured them, you were considered a PIRATE.

In your home country though, you would most likely be hailed as a HERO.

Thats just how it was.

Flawed system!
Hm, but that reminds me - the relations between the nations are hardcoded, yes?
I think I never saw any changes over time there...

Its not an arbitrary choice the developers of the game made. Thats the way it was in REAL LIFE. So they just copied the REAL WORLD rules that existed in the age of Sails.

No, relations between the various factions in the game are modifiable in the code. Just not sure what files they are in yet.

A bounty is a gift, I have 47k on my head and it gives me a constant supply of warships and frigates to sink. When I'm low on rations, theres always a friendly neighbourhood bountyhunter right around the corner <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

LOL!! Now thats the way to view it, Laser Cat!

Since when is someone who protects himself and is just on defence a pirate ?!

It's not realism, its a computergame..

You can't say that if dutch ships attacked a english trader for example for any reason and the english just managed not to die that he has a bounty on his head afterwards.. probably the dutch would not even know about what happend to their ship, it has happend on sea where nobody did see it..

And anyway, it's about war.. what is bounty for when there is war ? Didnt heard about any soldier in any war who got a bounty on his head..

i agree the game just has a few not very logic aspects, still a good game

In some point I agree with LouLogic... I´m not against the bounty thing after sinking/capture/plunder ships... but... What bout stealth and witnesses????... if you destroy a full convoy, all ships sinked, no captains taken as prisoners/hostages, no survivors.... why can a government know instantly of your acts agains them? In fact they shouldn´t jnow anything because there weren´t survivors of the slaughter.... if you capture an enemy captain then the actions against his nation should be knowed, but in a scale of time not at the moment... the government which ships were attacked by you shoul know about your acts at the moment of returning the captain to the government governors for a ransom or, if you free him on a shore/port or return him to other nations governor´s the time will be random about 3 days or a week or even more, after all news didn´t broadcast like nowadays, the information should travel on boat or with good pigeons <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
This could be interesting toconsider this for future mod implementation.... ar least is more real then the actual GPS tracking attacks system.

I agree on the witnesses thing. If no one witnesses bounty should not increase - that's realism.

<b>On Witnesses:</b>

Likely there could be some witnesses. Another ship passed close enough by to see the battle, someone got away in a life boat or was just clinging to a log, or maybe some slaves or even a member of your own pirate crew ratted you out (they are pirates too, afterall).

<b>On Flags:</b>

I was wondering last night what the historical reaction would be to a ship with no flag. Would everyone automatically attack you? Would everyone just scratch their heads and leave you alone? Why do pirates fly flags anyway? I know they look cool, but they just invite people to attack you and other pirates dont seem to care anyway.

For the OP, in game I constantly swap flags. If I see a Dutch Ship veer towards me and start chasing, I put up a Dutch flag. Same for the other nations. Once they catch up and see your flag, they will just sail away. Pirates will usually just attack anyway, so it's pointless to ever fly the pirate flag.

I think it would be much more usefull to have a 'stealth mode' where the game would do the swapping for you. Alternatly, map the flags to the 5-9 keys to quickly swap them on the world map(without the movie).

You can disable the movie by simply deleting the video files. Same with the intro. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
