<b>the new
<span style='color:blue'>SHIP BERTHING</span>

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

i've just finished putting together a package which includes the new <b>ship berthing</b> system, as well as <b>pirates ahoy! sails</b>, the new <b>custom sails</b> system and a couple of other tweaks.

you really have to try the ship berthing mod to believe it! you can berth up to four ships in each of the ports, with or without stripping them, at various prices. and there's a complete visual interface to view your berthed ships' information and to berth/unberth them.

there's also a new `ship-to`-ship transfer system that lets you transfer from companion to companion (instead of only from player character to companion), and also between berthed ships in that port.

i've got lots of ideas to expand the system in future releases, such as introducing consequences for not being able to pay berthing charges etc...

download the mod it and try it! (`right-click` -> save target as)

remember to back up before installing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />
oh, and if you're going to install cat's fred bob quest (which you definitely should do! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> ) then please install it before this mod.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Bwa ha ha ha, looks like I'm the very first one to try it out!

Sounds splendid mate, I'm'a test it right now. It'll install over B11, right?

*moments later*

Seems to work fine... The interfaces function, and it does what it's meant to do. Though it removes the descriptions/labels of sails, like telling which pirate the pirate symbols had belonged to.

As well, a bit of an error that forced me to quit the game: I somehow managed to shove off with a crew of only 32 on one of the higher class ships, one that ended up requiring at least 50 to man it. I also had a second, tiny boat (by the way-- in my latest install of B11, after a series of errors with previous installs, the gunboat is no longer an option. Why would this be?) with a crew of 0. So when I went to test the `ship-to`-ship transfer while in the water, I had only 32 men to split among two ships, meaning I couldn't exit that menu without making up the men I didn't have. Hence, had to alt+F4 the poor fool game. Was allowing me to shove off with insufficient crew an error in the code?

I also kind of wonder why you decided to make this particular mod... It works, and it's neat, but what about this made it a priority? What advantages are there in berthing a series of ships all over the 'pelago?

Unrelated, but I thought of it while testing just now: You know that lighthouse in Redmon port, at the end of a long spit beside the docks? Is it possible to walk to it?

<span style='color:red'><span style='`font-size`:30pt;`line-height`:100%'><b>* W * O * O * ! *</b></span></span>

Congratulations, Kieron! I'll be testing it today! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hey Kieron... I designed some custom sails and can't seem to get them to work with the custom sails settings you suggested. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

The PA sails are in and look very good, but mine are not there...

I followed instructions on how to name them and place them - and changing the numbers in BuildSettings.h...

They do not "activate" - I still get the regular country emblemed sails.

Getting an error in PotC ModHelper:

Haven't tried out the ship bething yet - wanted to see my sails in flight, first... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Another thought - I'm guessing all the stuff you did to make the ship berthing - caused my game to stutter and stall quite a bit... I had to uninstall. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />

Interestingly, a `by-product` of this is that when I went to board a ship, none of my opponents were armed. None of my men would fight, and everyone followed me around. This was really funny because I was at the time fighting the English, so I had my pirates, plus the English soldiers all standing around scratching and shifting their weight from foot to foot... Heh...

Very strange tho... I hope my comments have helped!

Did this happen to anyone else who installed this mod: On the main menu screen, where I first choose to load or start anew, the little "Sea Dogs II" logo above the buttons has been replaced with the "PotC" logo that was originally there.

Maybe it happened before the berthing mod and I didn't notice, I dunno. But several things in my game have gone a bit retro, most noticably hired officer dialogs reverting to dialog options of a mod before B11. That is, instead of me being able to ask them generally "about me, about you, about the ship," I'm just given a few of the newer options, like rations and our sails. I didn't think that text set was even anywhere among the files anymore. This only bothers me because I can't change my officers' clothes!

oh, i hate it when things so wrong <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" /> i shall get to work sorting it out...

<b>alan</b>
  • i don't know what you mean about removing the labels of sails. can you explain that?
  • thanks for the tip about the minimum crew problem. i'll have a look at that...
  • the officers' dialogue thing could be my mod's fault - it overwrites the enc_officer_dialog file. i'll check it's based on the latest version of the file.
  • as for why i bothered making the mod... it started out as just making an interface for nathan's ship berthing function, but i expanded and expanded and ended up changing the whole thing <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

    • <b>catalina</b>
the 'duplicate label' message doesn't matter (that's actually a bug in the bug checker rather than a bug in the code lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> it produces that message when you have two switch statements with "default:" cases in one file, although the code works `in-game` just fine <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> )

The descriptions of sails, I mean. The pirate logos used to say which pirate each sail logo represented, the real ones. Famous, historical types. I don't remember which pirates they were, specifically. Bluebeard maybe...

And I'm not sure but I seem to recall the officer dialog reverting to an older type before I installed your mod. Some time around the time I started trying to put my own new sails in, even though I didn't touch the officer dialog files.

Oh, and the dialog file for the FdF priest is wrecked; it won't even come up. I forget if I fooled with it or if this happened out of the blue.

Other than these... your mod is working splendidly.

You're getting an alienware? B******! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
J/K.
And here I am running on a year old dell.

ooh, i didn't know that had been put in. the mod overwrites the sail choosing interface, so that's my fault (using an older version of the file)

cat's mod also overwrites enc_officer_dialog.c; perhaps she used an older version of that file. i'll have a look. mine was based on hers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

i've just reinstalled build 11 with the update, and this feature isn't implemented, which means it must come from a later mod. do you know which mod this was, and where i can get it? i can then include it in with my mod and cat's mod. ta <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

I see... I don't remember whether Build11 had descriptions of the pirate sails or not. I think Viper was the one who made the sail mod that was built into B11, so the descriptions would be in his .potc file in one of the "`all-in`-one" downloads.

Another very useful feature in this vein would be to transfer between ships during the looting screen. I've lost count how many times I wasn't able to take some fine swag onboard because my boat was full and I had no free slots to capture the ship (could that be increased too? I know I've seen convoys of more than four ships), but another of my boats had plenty of extra room...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> That's why you must learn to plan ahead, Alan, transfer your plundered goods off of your ship before you board the next one! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

But I know what you mean! I usually transfer over (to the ship I am plundering) a lot of my knippels and grape, and even balls to squeeze in cargo I can't get otherwise. I figure I can always get more shot from one of my other ships.

As far as the enc_officer_dialog.c is concerned, I think I only changed a couple of things in it - to fix the `flag-raising` utility, and I also think I changed the "You're fired!" part... I don't think I changed anything else in there, and AFAIK it's the same file from Build 11.0.

yah, windows xp is designed to slowly destroy itself if you don't activate it... better get the legal version eh? (or find the cracked one from somewhere. good luck with that <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> )

actually, the new `ship-to`-ship transfer interface isn't available whilst you're at sea; if you want to transfer at sea you have to manoeuvre your ships into place, like in the original game. i didn't think it was very realistic to be able to 'transport' goods from ship to ship `star-trek` style when you're not in port. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> so i think it's realistic that you can only bring looted goods onto the looting ship...

Yeah, I try and transfer my stuff between ships before looting... but the grappling is automatic sometimes and doesn't give me a chance. Often enough I can enter a fight and BAM!, immediately I board the closest ship without firing a shot. Oh well, not a big deal.

By the by, I'm still playing with that Xevec I started out with... it seems to affect other ships, since I never have to fight more than two decks of people. I keep boarding Manowars, and only have to go through two decks.

I think I'll just reinstall my game/build/etc. again sooner or later, and get my dialog functions and stuff back.

I stopped activating the boarding abilities because I have been playing at Swashbuckler and want to use grapeshot to reduce the enemy crew down before I board - with the special abilities, the boarding sometimes takes place before I wish it to - and that annoys the heck outta me... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />
