XBox Pirates

Landlubber
Well, XBox Pirates has been out for two weeks, and noone has really commmented on it, so I'll start.

I love this game. The whole family loves this game. Between me and the wife and the kids, I don't think it's been turned off more than a few hours since we got it. It accommodates so many playing styles -- the kids like to board everything in site and hack away, my wife likes to play without making anyone mad at her, and I like whopping on Spanish galleons and trying to make the Caribbean into a French or British lake. It's easily the best XBox game we have.

I haven't played the computer version, but from what I read here, several things are easier, such as sailing and dancing. And the controls are excellent. I would much rather use a controller for sword fighting than a mouse and keyboard. (The main downside to POTC on computer when compared to POTC on the XBox is the controls -- fighting and sailing is easier wioth a controller.)

We don't do XBox live, but it looks like all this is is ship to ship battles, which we can play with each other if we want to, so no big loss if we never do it.

We all play this together as kind of a cooperative effort; one person plays and the rest advise and kibitz. This is easy with the XBox and a TV, but impossible on a computer. The kids just finished a unit on pirates in home school, so Pirates fits right in with their studies. Now they know Carribean geography (even if it's a little co mpressed) and they recognize all the names, althought they thought Ann Bonny should have been among the top 10.

Anyway, to summarize: Lots of thumbs up, lots of stars, great family fun, we can all be pirates. Keen sport for everyone.

I guess you haven't been angered by the cannon bug yet? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Seems that you cannot walk on land??????????

Treasure must be on the shore??????????

Something ain't right here.

Either there is a second serious bug in the game or the documentation is sorely lacking.

Treasure (also lost relatives and lost citiess) is on land, and when you hit the shore, you get the option of sailing off or putting in and searching the area. If you're in the right place, it cuts straight to the cinematic.

I hadn't notice the gun problem beyond seeing that some ships have more guns than than others, so I just figured there was a randon generator involved. As for destroying the cannons with round shot, I usually take the sails down with chain, then rake the hull with grape until the crew surrenders.

I'm pretty sure my own cannons regenerated when I repair, but I'll check that and let you know.

I'm sure your own cannons repair when you get the ship fixed. The bug only affects ships that you have not yet caught.

As for the treasure bug, it seems that sometimes, in the vicinity of Trinidad, the treasures / relative's huts are located _outside the play area_ and there's no way you can get to them:

For the XBox players' sake, I hope the they fix these bugs faster than they are doing with the PC version.

Haven't hit the Trinidad treasure bug either. There was one treasure in that area that was hard to find, but I could get to it. Nothing that was inaccessible, though.

Thanks for the link to that website. I'd never been there.

OK I just bought the PC version, and I'll take the XBox version hands down. Map is better; controls are better; interfaces in general are better; and I don't see where any significant features have been compromised.

And dancing is actually doable.

But then, I really hate using the number pad and the space bar.

More on this one -- After taking a little treasure-seeking stroll in the PC version, I'd have to count this as no big loss. Does anything actually happen when you walk on land, or is it just a little gang of pirates shuffling through the woods until they find the treasure? It didn't seem like it added anything at all challenging.

I was considering buying pirates for XBOX but within the first week it was released it was at Target for $20 and that usually signals that it isnt that popular. However, my friends brother is one of the ppl who made the game.

Don't automatically discount a game just because it's in the discount bin. I got XBox POTC for 10 bucks in the cheap bin at Kohl's.

As for XBox Pirates for 20 bucks -- I had 20 bucks worth of fun with it in the first day. It kept the whole family occupied all afternoon and evening. Going to a movie would have cost twice that.

I have hit the Trinidad bug with my very first game. My aunt is missing south of Trinidad between Skull marsh and cutthroat cove. I have searched about everywhere, but there is no Skull Marsh or cutthroat cove in the play area. I am now stuck with no way to get to my grandfather search.

I like the game better than PC version because of the controller controls, the dance is functional, and the graphics are better. I think the speed of dueling, and ship combat is also faster and more challenging. While I like POTC, the open-endedness of SMP gives much more varied play. In POTC, you always reach the same place, but with number of games played on the PC version, my retirement scores are all different.

You might try hugging the mainland coast and head E/SE. There's an indent that you have to sail into, but that's where I found the uncle. You have to be in that indent; putting in next to it won't work.

Good luck. I hope you find it. I wish I could describe it better.

And I agree with everything in your second paragraph. I like being able to kick back on the couch and play; it's much betyter than hunched over a keyboard. (Same with POTC, but I do miss the mods when I'm playing XBox.)
