Boarding in Build 10.1

Rad

Privateer
Hi, all. Can anybody competent tell me why boarding in Build 10.1 doesn´t work ? I like this older Build more than Build 12, except of unfunctioning boarding. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Whew, Rad, I'm not sure there's many around here anymore who actually worked on B10.1. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I didn't, and I'm sorry I can't help... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> Maybe Skull or Fred Bob will know something. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Did this just start giving you trouble? Perhaps it's a corrupted savegame?

Hi, Cathalina. Thank you for your reply. You know I played Builds 6,7,8,9, and 12, for that reason I wanted to try Build 10 now. This version seems to me one of the best Builds ever because many things are adjusted quite good here, except the boarding that doesn´t work at all ( but I don´t have the experience of instant boarding yet here). I think we shouldn´t rejected the older version of Builds as obsolete forever and maybe a return to them from time to time could be even quite fruithful for inspiration. In Build 12 I had to adjust to many things so as it would be good playable for me. Many bothering restrictions was inserted to it. Could anybody from modders concentrate on some further good side quests? I think this is biggest shortage of all the Build yet. Ships and everything are quite good but some another more complicated quests would be welcomed. Maybe some further islands too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

More side quests are indeed needed, I agree. It actually surprises me that so far there haven't been any except the one I made for Fred Bob. Others have started working on quests but have lost them due to computer troubles <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> or "real life" intruding into their modding work... BUT - new quests and locations ARE being worked upon right now - but these things DO take some time. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I'm working now on a "Sneaky Trader" mod that will eventually involve you in quite a few different things - "buried treasure", stolen goods, items to help you break out of jail or open those darned exploding chests, &tc... Perhaps a stolen ship and an angry governor, eh, who knows? It's gotten a lot more complicated than my simple desire to disarm those pesky exploding chests! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Others are working on opening up new moorings or towns where you might have a quest - in Build 12 you can go into a new cave on Khael Roa and that can be used for quests... There are new fortresses being planned, new characters being created, and all sorts of new and interesting items and weapons are turning up... Someone was trying to open up the other half of Falaise de Fleur for quests and new towns... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Modding is *quite* the ongoing project! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

It's not so much that the older builds are obsolete, it's that the newer builds are full of bugfixes that made the older versions of the Build or the original game not run quite as well as it might. We're still tweaking some of the original quests to get them to work right. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

So it's all a work in progress. I've strongly recommended MANY times that these new things in each Build be switchable - and we've done a lot towards that end - perhaps a lot of what you find a problem in Build 12 are things you need to switch or adjust - but once that's done, you should be happy with your game, I'd think...

If there's something you wish to have switchable that is not, I think someone should be able to help you with that (if it's possible, that is!).

And again, I most enthusiastically welcome you to offer any suggestions - what you would like to see in the game - and perhaps a modder somewhere will pick up on the idea and run with it - great ideas are often really difficult to come by, so the input of the players is what modders (some of whom are too busy modding to play, themselves, LOL!) need in order to make the game better! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Hey Rad <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about a boarding problem in Build 10, but if you want to have Build10 gameplay without the bugs I'd recommend that you download B11 and switch off Coastraiders, weaponsmod and the other B11 additions. Switches should all be in buildsettings.h, and if there is still something you want to get rid of post again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And be warned, B10 contains my crude first version of Vice City, which can be as annoying as D&D for SD <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

You are right, the Build could do with more queststories. I always hope that some of the storytellers of the cyberpirate community will finally make their stories come true in PotC. We have so many tutorials and posted knowledge by now that anyone who is able to post in an RP should also be able to write a PotC quest <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

You can switch off ships easily enough, for random encounters at least. Just add the line

refship.CanEncounter = false

in the shipsinit.c file among the ship´s statistics.

But I do agree, it would be nice if mods can be switched on and off in the buildsettings, for not everybody likes some of the strange ideas developed around here.

What´s the cyberpirate community, respectively, where can I find it? I always like to read fan fiction. Some is outright magnificent.

Hi, Catalina, CCC and Grimm. Thank you all for your nice answers. You are very kind and amiable to me. I very appreciate it.
You kow, I played Build 12, then I built my new computer and in this time my friend wanted to play for the first time PoTC. Because for this 10.1 version exists some translate into our native lanuage from somebody (although quite bad and only partial) it was some help for him because he can´t speak Enlish nor a word. So from here is my playing of Build 10.1 now. But, this Build seems to me really good except this boarding. I like very much that when I am in the icon menu and want to sail to some enemy´s ship, I click at this icon with any ship and I will appear beside it. Not as in Build 12 where I must almost constantly listen that I must approach to this ship by myself. Why? I don´t like it and don´t understand such negative "improvements". They only spoils the game and aren´t funny and amusing. I see good modding in adding to the game something extra which improve the playability and amusement of the game - new stories, new nice ships, new islands and so on. But not that I can´t buy any wheat almost anywhere and my crew many times deserted from my ships or my cannons shoot only to the distance about 500 meters and so on. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Catalina, in Sea Dogs is very good thing and it is conquering fortresses and towns and adding them under the British empire for example. Could you insert something like that to the new Builds. I miss it here very much. It is so amusing how those cannons batteries explode in Sea Dogs !
And I hope new Build will be complete again with including Build 11 in it. I think the easy instalation is very important for many players. And all your plans that you delineated here looks very good and perspectively. And in the end I would like to remark one thing yet. I think the best style of boarding was proceeding from deck to deck untill into the captain´s cabin. You should revert to this old, good, amusing and a little challenging system from the basic game and old Builds. The instant boarding could be preserved. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

CCC. I think these all towns skirmishes are from you ? Am I right? I like them here, only some my officers (in this 10.1 version) are too much active sometimes and have a tendency to perish too often. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Grimm, Thank you I will try to use it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

You´re welcome.

You can get the old cannonrange back via buildsettings, there´s a function like cannonrange_scalar or something like that. The `sail-to` feature is disabled only for realistic sailing setting (at least as far as I know). Occasionally, you still have to fight through all decks, but rather often, the enemy crew will surrender earlier. It depends on the enemy crew morale and crew size. I hadn´t thought the wheat a problem, but anyways, you can switch that off in buildsettings as well. Captured ships, however, provide me with more than enough wheat, it´s Rum I´m constantly short of.

Thanks, but I have no problem with my cannons. It is every time the first thing I adjust by myself. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I agree as well, and I promise that all my strange ideas will get a switch <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> (the not so strange ones as well, if there are any <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> )

I´m much oblieged to you <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-Rad`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Rad)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I like very much that when I am in the icon menu and want to sail to some enemy´s ship, I click at this icon with any ship and I will appear beside it. Ahoy Rad,not sure why board'n in build 10.1 is not working for you,it always worked for me in all builds with or without instant boarding perks.
To answer yer question above, many people complained it wasn't realistic to be able to [sail to] enemy ship at close distance. You can still do it you just have to sail away from enemy ship until there is enough distance and then it will work,It was not meant to be funny or amusing, more of a realistic feature, although you do have the option of using the [sail to] or not <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
You can adjust the distance in [Sail To] feature to your likeing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hi, Skull. I did some adjusting about that but I was never satisfied with it. For that reason I don´t like it. I think PoTC isn´t any simulator and IMHO it should be as amusing and funny as possible. How can it be the simulator when the galleons and caravels are together with brigs and schooners here ? Schooner is ship form the 19th century, Brig from 18th century. So, what simulation we are talking about here? What simulation is it when the ranges of cannons were shortened to about 500 meters in Build 12? I put on Ellaybe historical datas where is described that culverines from 17the century shots on the distance about 1500 meters. I am waiting on further Build and I am curious how it will be. And tell me, please, is Nathan back in your mod team or not ? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

And what about boarding in Build 10 concerns. When I board the ship and defet enemy´s crew, the only thing I can do is open two chests on the enemy´s board and nothing more. Why? Every time when I did it I had to cancel this action and use load because I couldn´t even to unfasten my ship from enemy. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

Someone activated my banner here. It is good and I thank to anybody who did it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

And I have some sugestion about dice. I would be very glad if the dice could be modified so as anybody could play for much higher money, even for his ship if he choose that. Dice would be much interesting under such a conditions. I suggested to Nathan in the past but nobody was willing listen to me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Aye Rad,if ye don't add more ship choices to the game people want more diffrent ships te sail an plunder,so de game is historicaly incorrect, but then again pirates never had a teleport device te move their ship closer to thar enemy ships either, but ye can bet yer life ,wish they had one <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

You know, I don´t ever mind all those ships are together here, I am for it, but on the other hand and for that and other reasons, people shouldn´t reason with realism overly here, I think. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

We are no official team here, more a loose congregation, and Nathan hasn't been around for some time.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->When I board the ship and defet enemy´s crew, the only thing I can do is open two chests on the enemy´s board and nothing more.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Don't know if that is connected to any Build, but it has once confused me as well: If the "open chest" icon appears the "openlock" icon for moving to the next deck disappears. But you should still able to procceed to the next boarding stage by pressing the spacebar (or whatever your action key is)

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->And I have some sugestion about dice. You don't have to wait for others to make your grand ideas come true. PotC can be modded by everyone, and it doesn't take more time than writing a post here. To increase the dicemoney open dialogshabitue_dialog.c with Notepad, use F3 to find this line
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->AddMoneyToCharacter(pchar, -100);<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
and replace the "100" with any sum that you like to loose. I'd leave the line below dealing with "npchar.money", the money of your opponent, unchanged so that he doesn't run out of money too soon. Then do the same for your win a bit further below:
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->AddMoneyToCharacter(pchar, 100);<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

HTH <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hi, CCC. In the case of normal boarding nothing works here but at least instant boarding started to work for me when I received this experience.

What about dice concerns I rather thought player could choose from various sums - 100, 1000, 10000, 100000 or his/her ship. It could be funny, I think.

And that anybody can modify PoTC and insert one´s pieces of work to the Builds, I personally think it isn´t good. Someone reasonable should decide what is good and what isn´t, maybe several from you constant modders. Into the new Builds should be add only `first-rate` improvements and expansions. I know, it is quite difficult assess that in the first moment. For that reason I think some bigger feedback should be take into consideration, which doesn´t happen too much, here, IMHO. For that reason it seems to me as though Builds would stagnate somehow, because a few good things was removed from them and some bad things was added to them. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Nathan has become very busy with "real life" but plans to return - no he has not forgotten us, HEH! - as soon as things calm down a bit.

I think you can change that sailto range so that it is like the normal setting in 10.1 - or set it to "0" so that there is no restriction whatsoever. Then it will be like you wish. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I'd love to see the dice game more challenging. And playing for a ship could be a quest of sorts, heh... OR a difficulty you might encounter - something like the "drunk" reaction you have where you black out - and then wake up - and find out your ship is gone because you rolled the dice and LOST! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I like it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

And Rad, I tried to get your banner to work but it did not cooperate with me, either, so I asked Keith. He may have been the one to fix it for ya. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

Hi, Catalina. I agree with you because when you have several milions of gold already I think nobody will play dice already by 100 gold. But if you will gamble your Manovar or even your all fleet and will lose it, than, in this case it would be something already. On the other hand you could win the opponent´s ship. And you neither could be drunk. Simply I think some people sufer with gambler passion and are willing to bet anything. Please, if you can, hand over my thanks to Keith. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Not anybody can do that as easily as you think. All one can do is getting something uploaded on the ftp by now, but a buildupgrade does involve a selective process of what is wanted and what not. The dilemma, of course, is, that those mods wanted by those doing the selection get into it and those they might not want don´t. It´s always subjective.
