That "searcher" model is really fine with that long coat and all. I have been looking at him lately to see how I might use him for something... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

It is such a shame, JMV, that you lost those skins after all that hard work. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" />:

Alan, nice touch with the rings and gold teeth, haha... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I am looking forward to seeing your efforts, Vassal! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I got it working "good enough" now, thanksabunch; your suggestions saved me. But it's a good thing there aren't any contests here for best mods... or should there be? A little incentive to get everyone trying, at least.

Myself, I'm currently looking at the feasibility of a bunch of fancy new characters, like Spanish Inquisition agents (sort of; they're of course "dead" by this time, ha!) and a samurai. I'd love it if I could find some more original Sea Dogs skins, just to flesh out my ranks a little.

And there *is* an Oriental pirate that you might be able to use to `re-skin` into a samurai - type, however he'd be missing a lot of the really neat things that make a samurai a samurai - such as the smaller blade, &tc...

I agree with Cat, a competition would just keep us amateur modders out of the system, while the veterans swoop in and steal the glory. Besides, the fun part is learning how to do it anyway.

Overall, I think your idea is a good one. We need more piratical skins in the game.

I'm using a monk's body and that Asian pirate's face. He's a bit portly, but it gets the robes and such. For his sword I'll redo the Squall's texture - it looks most like a katana. And finally, for a physical model to copy I have here a figure of Jim Belushi as the Samurai Baker.

When he's done I'd like to make a quest where you encounter him on Douwesen...

...Well, he almost looks like a pudgy samurai, sort of... if you squint... quite a bit...

<img src="http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/samuraijunk.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I find your use of the monk to be quite unique, Alan! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I might work on some more pirate skins if I get the inclination... I have one which was a prototype of my Armand Delacroix character - he wears a bandana and is sleeveless - looks a little rougher, but still cavalierly. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />:

Wow <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Dat be some great skins ye made there! I noticed that it be either impossible or very rare tew find a female model in the tailor shops, xept fer danielle ofcourse! But I dont like her... I did like those skins ye made. But my question be: Where do I get those skins an stuff to throw in me game, and can i equip dem tew officers?

Thanks in advance mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Well this is the skin now pirates!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />
<img src="http://www.thelib.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_Vassalbell.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> WTG, Vassal! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aye Vassel,he be one mean look'n dude as Beltrop is in Seadogs,keep up de great werk mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Very nice Vassal, but I suggest keeping this "ugly" version as well as it might come in handy for future quests where a very seedy looking man is required.
Either that or someone might use it as a zombie skin as it does look like something you'll find in a George A Romero film <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Actually i will use this guy in my long side quest, but first i need a new ship model that he will use as his ship <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Ugh, that samurai attempt made me so sad. I hope this Dread Pirate Roberts, a quickie just for fun, looks a little better. Making hair and mustaches blond is friggin' tough, and you can't do a lot with an `all-black` outfit to make it look less like a catsuit. Suggestions on how to make the face better resemble Carey Elwes?

<img src="http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/dreadpirateroberts.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Get rid of the dark five o'clock shadow? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Give him a small smirk?

Make those eyes an electric blue?

Raise an eyebrow - oh well, nevermind, you can't see that behind the mask! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

"You seem like a nice fellow. I hate to kill you."
"YOU seem like a nice fellow. I'd hate to die." <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

He is no samurai....he he he is is is ZOORROO <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

O man make a quest using that skin as Zorro <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Hell, why not; Zorro was Spanish, right? I dunno what time period... probably after this... but he's quite a dashing avenger appropriate to any era.

I'll call my quest... The Poke of Zorro.

BTW, Vassal: Saw your post at ellebye about some muskets... !?
--

Cat: I tried to do a smirk, but I'll work on accentuating that. And I wasn't sure what colour his eyes were, but electric blue sounds right. And the texture doesn't actually have any 5'oclock shadow... my screen's just too dark. But I do think he needs to be made more pale.

This is the only model I could find that fit - relatively puffy sleeves and narrow pants, a headwrap and no beard. Can you think of a better one?

Inego Montoias is next...

Maybe the Giant too.

In the original Zorro story Johnston McCulley describes the action to take place in the "age of decadence of the missions" a description which usually is factored into Californian history between `1822-1848` -- The Mexican rule period. However, McCulley is clear in his writing that it is Spanish California, not Mexican California. Therefore, it is most commonly agreed that the action fo the novel occurs in the waning days of Spanish control of California i.e `1769-1821`.

The book ends with a peasant revolt, however, this revolt is not supposed to be seen as the revolution to kick out the Spaniards from California. Therefore, we move away from 1821.

Using the latest film as a base we can figure out some basic chronology (I am referring to the Hopkins, Benderes, `Zeta-Jones` film). The beginning scene shows a `middle-aged` Zorro played by Hopkins aiding the peasants in the revolt that does remove Spain from Californian authority and power. The actual Zorro legend occurs when Don Diego is in his early to mid 20's, usually being called back from war against France. If Don Diego dela Vega is in his 40's in 1821, subract 20, and you are around 1800.

What about war with France. During the Napoleonic War Period there are two periods where France and Spain clash. 1st in the War of the First Coalition from June `1792-October` 1797 with Napoleon's conquest of Northern Italy, and then again in the Peninsular War in `1808-1814`. Between `1797-and` 1808 Spain was allied with Napoleon's forces. `1808-1814` is too late, so it has to be the War of the first coalition.

In the story, Don Diego is upset that he has called back to California from Spain because the war is still going on. From this we can assume that this occurs early or to the middle of the war, when the French Invasion was still very strong. Therefore `1793-95` emerges as the best date range for Don Diego to leave Spain and return to California.

So, if you are looking for a date for your Zorro quests, I would recommend `1796-97` when Don Diego would have been `23-26`.

Hope that helps.
