East India Company game features

Sargon

Landlubber
Hi everyone,

So excited about Age of Pirates comming out and even more delighted about East India Company with it's scope.

I want to say thank you first of all for having me here, I'm a wooden ship modeler and always loved the age of sailing naval warfare.

Will the player be able to play as other countries and which ones ? Which countries can we play in the game ?

I would really like to play as France and the Dutch East India Companies and even Swedish and Dansih East India companies and or Navies as the 1750 era is pivotal for these powers.

Other Major East India Companies

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_East_India_Company" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_East_India_Company</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_East_India_Company" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_East_India_Company</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_East_India_Company" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_East_India_Company</a>

And here are some of the other countries ships:

Swedish East Indiaman 'Gotheborg', 1745

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Indiaman_G%C3%B6theborg" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Indiaman_G%C3%B6theborg</a>

<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Ostindiefararen_G%C3%B6theborg_departure_from_Gothenburg_2005_oct_02_pic2.jpg" target="_blank">http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...oct_02_pic2.jpg</a>

Dutch East Indiaman 'Amsterdam' , 1749

<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/VOC_Amsterdam.jpg" target="_blank">http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...C_Amsterdam.jpg</a>

<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/VOC2.jpg" target="_blank">http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/VOC2.jpg</a>

French East Indiaman 'Duc de Duras' (Famous Bonhomme Richard of John Paul Jones, Continental Navy ), 1765

<a href="http://perso.orange.fr/gerard.delacroix/expo/Bonhomme/expo.htm" target="_blank">http://perso.orange.fr/gerard.delacroix/ex...nhomme/expo.htm</a>

Also how much exactly of the world is included ? I know it's over 40 cities and towns and am very impressed.

Also can we have subclasses of warships such as 38 gunner frigates and 44 gunners and 64 gunner ships of the line and 74 gunners, etc. Some Indiaman also carried 28 guns, some 36.

HMS Falmouth East Indiaman, 1752

<a href="http://www.euromodel-ship.com/modelli_gb/falmouth_gb.htm" target="_blank">http://www.euromodel-ship.com/modelli_gb/falmouth_gb.htm</a>

Also will there be an amount of player controlled vessels for line of battle engagements of say 8 vs. 8 or 12 vs. 12 naval battles ? How many ships can we control in a sea battle ?

Will there be differant cannon types, 36, 32, 24, 18,12, 8 and 4 pounder canonns ?

Also, the look of the ships in the preview while beautifull, resemble Napoleanic era ships. Will the look of the mid 18th century for the ships be polished up, open stern galleries, no "Nelson" yellow and black painted hulls.

Some examples of mid 18th century:

Danish Navy

And i pose another question at the lot 'o ye, will damage be shown after or prefferably durin' a seabattle?

I actually got email from Sargon01 with same questions and tried to reply, but my mails didn't get through. So I'll post answers here :)

"Unfortunately I don’t have time to discuss this in all the detail I would like, but I’ll include some quick notes here:

- Currently we have only one playable nation/power, which is british EIC. This enables us to have stronger storyline.

- I know about the other companies as well, but smaller ones like Swedish and Danish will not play such a large role as French and dutch.

- The world is roughly from London to Aceh, as you can read from interview at pirates ahoy, for example.

- There will naturally be different cannons.

- Scale in naval battles is not very large, so huge line battles are not our thing."

That would be during battle, yes.

Thank you for your timely answer Kim.

I must ask if it's not too late to include the French and Dutch at the very least into the single player game to get more nationalities buying this game.

It is interesting that you picked the mid 18th century as it was pivotal in establishing Brittain as the number one super power through the loss of France's colonial empire and end of their East Indian ambitions.

I beg you, please find some way to include the other powers of France and Netherlands at the very least. If it's only to be England I will not buy this game.

Why is it that English based games are always more important than that of other countries ? What is the result...

Less sales because of a population being completely ignored in favor of English only games. Plus one gets bored of seeing the world through one perspective. The French and Dutch were just as pivotal in India as England. I invite someone who can point it out otherwise.

I don't want to play only as the English, I want choices aside from Piracy and King George. It's like having all the chocolates in the world and only picking Hershey's and throwing the rest away !

You can only make more money by including a differant community. After all, isn't progress evolution and not more of the same what leads to revolution ? Don't shoot yourself in the foot by including England only.

How many Dutch players do you think will buy this game ? How many French ? Not many beaucause they are marginalized. As I feel marginalized too.

If you need help writing the story for France and Netherlands I'm available and I'm sure the bright members of this community would help also. Some of the best mods around and differant storylines come from the modding community and not stock storylines from manufactures. i,e Rome Total War.

I do hope you will see the wisdom of including a larger population. Aren't you guys and galls after all Finnish ??

And Finland has a rich and wonderfull history with Sweden, Denmark and the Baltic wars. Should it be that England is the only country of importance in the world? England isn't the world, it's a wonderfull country; but people want something differant.

One more thing... If line of battle tactics are out perhaps you should reconsider the ship of the line in the game.

What does the board think of this ? England only or other countrie as well ? I want choice.

I thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,

Sargon ( David )

I hope you realize that I am very proud of East India Company and respect your company.

But I will not buy a game of this nature if it only includes Brittain. All other games of this nature give you some choice other than England aside from Smuggling and Piracy.

I wish you the best and do hope your esteemed company might yet reconsider your position of only one country, England.

Here is a wish that one day a game company won't leave the rest of us behind.

Best wishes.

David

We are not asking for massive battles, I think many of us would settle happily for a fleet of 8-12 ships.

I say so because I know the players here.

Look at the most sought after mod right here at Pirates Ahoy, a Napoleanic era mod.

And why do these people want this ??? For ship of the line battles.

The only post in Age of Pirates for a ship mod, a 74 gunner !!!

I really would appreciate the forums imput. But looks like you can also forget your ship of the line battles too folks. Speak up now, because come 2008 it's too late !

Kim, one last thing... Have you taken the time to see the shipmodels I have posted for <i>accurate</i> mid 18th century ships ?

These are quite differant than the ones in the game which resemble the closed stern of the HMS Victory after her refit in the 1790's. The look is very differant than the Georgian look with open stern balconies and more careved and guilded ornamentation.

If you guys would like a researcher I gladly offer my services and time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Thanks Kim

PM me off list if interested.

Great and thank ye for answering on such a short notice Kim...

As fer the "other" nationalities in game, i am Dutch but i will buy this game anyway.
Me bonny lass is half French but she will luv it anyway...

Surely i would love to be able to pick me own nationality that goes without sayin'...

I simply do not wish to be playin' as a "Red Coat" ar a "Frog"!
So right now the only choice is piracy, fun at first but there are many meself included who will like and come to luv the trade aspects 'o such a promising game...

I await with anticipation...

Yes, very nice trailer and thank you very much for that !

I will wait and see what happens though, here are some polls so you know on Playlogic website about East India company including another country besides England and about ship of the line battles.

Would be wise to not do your own thing, but listen to your customers instead. Good advice.

See for yourselves :

Kim,

I have sent you email to your company and email to you in this forum with customer suggestions and polls. We appreciate your time and considerations and hope that East India Company will indeed be the game that redefines the genre.

More playable countries such as France and the other east india companies and I'll gladly pay $50.00 for this game.

If France is not in, forget it as this was the high point of my people. The French easily could have beaten the english in India and were as strong and better allied with the native indians.

Perhaps it would have been a less bloody and more humane empire had it been French. Remember France never had slavery even as easrly as the 1700's. And that is just why I want France and Holland to be playable.

I vote make France and Holland at least playable faction.

More humane? I higly doubt it "mon ami"!

Not that i fancy the Red Coats more over the Frogs so to speak mate, i can write this at the moment without fear 'o reprisals from me bonny lass mon petite Fleur Noir who happens to be half French herself hehe...

But i agree Holland 'n France should be playable factions in this upcoming treat of a game...

I agree the game "East India Company" looks very very good. Encore has obviously done quite a bit of research on the ship of that period.

The detail is exquisite. The only point of improvement would be in the area of sail handling with close attention to the placement of the spars and sails. I would love to see the crew swarm up the rigging to set and reduce sail. Rather than having the sails just magically disappear. I would also love to have the ability to balance the rig for optimum perfromance by setting, stowing or reefing individual sails. A properly balancing the rig requires only minmal rudder input which translates into less drag and more speed. I would also like the ability to set only reefed tops'ls and jib in event of a storm. Not cruising along with all plain sail set as some games do. With regard to yard and Sail positioning, the top'sl and t'gallent yards are lowered to the the doublings when the sail is stowed. Only the Course's are rigged a at fixed height. The very tight stow of the sail to the yard is called a harbor stow and is only preformed when the sail is to be stowed for any longer periods of time. Just before sail is hoisted the gaskets are cast off and sail then hangs by the buntlines and clewlines. Jibs are cast free and hoisted. They did not have rolling furling systems back then. For more information on Sail handling you could pick up a copy of "*The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor : Or a Key to the Leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship" *by Darcy Lever. Or better yet spend a week or two on a working square rigged ship.

I mean no offense to your game by the previous comments. It just seems a shame putting all that work into the details and falling into the same trap as every other sailing game/simulator ever produced.

Thank you for your time. Looking forward to the release of "East India Company"
Greg.

Yes I know, but one can always dream.

Thanks for the link to the Kalmar Nyckel. I had lost that bookmark when switching to a
new system. Back in 2000 I got the chance to spend a week sailing on the HMS Rose in the
area of Lunnenberg Nova Scotia, before she became the Suprise.

It never hurts to ask.

Cheers.
Greg.
