German Translation

NikitosJurcksen

Hello, I saw in the games settings that there a few languages available, but not German. Has a translation been started or planned in the past?
I gladly would try translating the game into German. I speak both German and Russian on a native level, so maybe i might help with some Russian stuff too. I have a little bit of experience with German-Russian translation through journalistic work. Would love some infos.

Greetings

The reason there is no German translation is that nobody has volunteered to do the translating! Be warned that it's a big project - both the Russian and Spanish translations are still in progress, not least because new material such as dialogs and descriptions of new objects continue to be added. Take a look at Need Help - Updating the Russian Translation and WIP - Spanish translation for some idea of what you'll be doing. The Russian translation is currently the only one actively being worked on, therefore the most complete.

The first file you should translate is "RESOURCE\INI\TEXTS\ENGLISH\common.ini". Begin your translation by creating folder "RESOURCE\INI\TEXTS\GERMAN" (or whatever other name you prefer for the subfolder) and put your translation of "common.ini" in there. The game looks for each language's version of "common.ini" and will not recognise the language if that file is not there.

Another thread which you may want to read:
PTBR Translation
It has some technical notes about how to get a translation into the game - and I'll also need to re-read it to remind myself of what to do once you have translated some files, so that I can make the game recognise the translation!

Incidentally, if you have a German background, have a look at this sidequest:
The Kapitein of Kralendijk
It's based very loosely on a real incident which happened in 1906, with a lot of adaptation to make it fit into the Caribbean in the age of sail.
