Random Questions

You couldn't tell it to Artois, because he has Artois_Voysey_dialog.c set for him instead of the Enc_Officer_dialog.c file used by all random officers. Something can be done about this, but nobody did so far.

The icons for the items are in the RESOURCE\TEXTURES\INTERFACES\items#.tga.tx files. Every item should have it's own texture. You can open and convert these files with the TX Convertor program, available from the modding tools page on my site.

Thanks for the folder, and i already got that converter.

who knows actually how/in what order the smokeX.tga.tx files are played, when you fire the cannons?
i personally find it a bit confusing, that smoke graphics and alpha channels are kept in seperate files...
is there a reason behind that? i mean, all we get is a white wall, more or less? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

i mean, i can get a somewhat satisfying result be adjusting ALL smoke files over the thumb, but analyzing them so i EXACTLY know whats going on would be a lot of work... and it would be in vain, since nobody except me will ever be using it, especially that build 13 is gonna be ready soon. (hopefully)

will build 13 have different graphics for the "muzzleflash" and the hit indicating explosion? i really do hope so <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

btw:
how about something along these lines for a +sailing item, instead of a crystal?
<img src="http://www.twofinger.at.tc/sextant.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
shall i look for the crystal and wrap the according file up?
maybe i should get rid of the upper left, detaily part, it just looks... to small...

If you want to have info about the smoke in PotC, you really should contact Merciless Mark. He is the person who knows the most about it.

That texture looks nice. I'll be looking forward to adding the sextant to Build 14! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Thats the ticket! nice sextant <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
I think you could keep the 'detail bits' for one version atleast. I say 'one version' because the way i was thinking we could do new sailing tools for the player would be along the lines that the spyglass works. So we should have a variety of sextants, that look slightly different from each other, and each is a better or worse quality item. better sextants are more expensive and give a better bonus to navigation skills etc

Great work btw, very nice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

hehe, thank you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

well, i thought, atm we only have one crystal that gives you +sailing. i forgot its name, but my character got one, so i can easily check, which one it is.

as for making the work easier, i thought about looking up the according itemX.tga.tx file, and simply replace the crystal with the sextant, and convert it back so... is there any guarantee that the locations of the items in the files will stay the same through the following builds? id rather not have it ending up as a healing potion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

give me an okay, and ill start working right away <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

if you prefer (i think im adressing pieter with that) i can just make the sextant icon with a frame as a tga file,
maybe in different qualities, so you can add them as you like.

how about the item description btw?

i really dont want to be a pita, but i think once i got the hang of the way things work around here, i can deliver more output, without requiring so much input <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I personally would prefer to not replace the +1 sailing stone texture, but rather add it at an empty spot in the item texture files. Once we get to working on Build 14, we'll oprobably be needing some new items, such as the sextant you made. If we want to make the sextant in different qualities, the same way as the spyglass, I think we should actually give the sextant a bigger use than just +1 sailing.

Thats a beautifully done Sextant. I agree with you again, Pieter, that deserves a much wider use than just a simple +1 to sailing, and I'd love to see it done in several levels of quality. Say a wooden one that looks like crap, a nicer one made of pot metals and bad materials, another of brass thats good quality and the execellent quality model thats all the bells and whistles. **grins**

Well done ged!

Great work with the sextant, Ged <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Replacing those magic items with navigation instruments adds yet more age-of-sail atmosphere. That has been discussed often already, but you are FAIK the first one to deliver something.

Other magic gadgets could be replaced as well, e.g. the Leadership +1 Diamond with a "Cat-o-Nine-Tails" or "Articles of War", the Gunnery+1 csystal by a "Targeting device" etc.

If you are willing to tackle that open a thread in the Brainstorming section for ideas and help (should you need some <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

well, thanks for the flowers, guys.
but i only proficiently stole and edited the image <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

well actually i just sent a mail to the guy that made the sextant, and kindly asked him to use his work. after all we are using his picture only in the size of a thumbnail, so i think he might as well agree. he also made a very nice looking compass, i could modify very nicely for potc.

funny thing is, that apart from extracting the images from their white background, there isnt too much work to do.
maybe a little more saturation and there you go, the color scheme looks as if it was MADE for potc.

oh, and to keep this topic true to his title another random question:
could somebody explain how the repair skill works in vanilla potc, 12.1 and 13?
assuming i dont use a "repair" ability in battle/on sea.
as i understand it, with passing time the crew uses cloth and planks to repair the ship back to [skill*10]%.
do they also do it while im on the worldmap, sailing around?
at what speed?

its funny, that not even the vanilla game was somewhat clear about this.

oh, and in the build mod i need much less cloth/planks, right?

IIRC, its a daily percentage. It is supposed to work on the map, I'm not so sure about while you are on the sea.

As to how it works in the build mod, we'll have to depend on IncredibleHat, Hook or Pieter to explain that.

Cheers, mate! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

(atm im playing, breathing virtual salty air, and pirate style im drinking beer from a mug)

LOL... I'm actually looking forward to doing that for awhile this weekend, though it will be a tough choice. I just got my copy of Neverwinter Nights 2, and I'm looking VERY forward to playing and modding the shite out of that game too. **grins**

So many good, moddable games..... So damned little time!

zomg, something just hit me:
other people build lowriders, and we, what are we doing here?

we pimp our videogames. well... how nerdy is THAT <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

im gonna get me a new mantra for meditation:
"i have a life, i have a life"
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Oh man!! That so freakin' true. **grins**

I at least drink me rum real life fairly regularly at least.

Cap'n Morgans, gotta love the spiced stuff.

'Sides, moddin' games is cheaper 'n buildin' lowriders. Long as you discount the cost of the software needed to do some of said modding. **grimaces at the thought of how much money he's poured into software over the years**

and another question from me:
can i somewhat easily modify the "autobuy" function , so it doesnt touch any good except food, ammo and cloth/planks?

i pretty much hate it, when it sells all the stuff i got aboard.

The Auto Buy function is pretty much an "Auto Trade" function. To change it the way you want, be sure to contact IncredibleHat. He once had it working like that, if I recall correctly.

They can say, look at me pimped car. And we, i have an awesomly cool pimped game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
