Sneaky Trader Mod - Update and help needed

Heh, my pleasure Cat. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Inez, I just did a little `delete-and`-cap. I'm afraid 99% of my modeling experience is airplanes and spaceships though, so don't get your hopes up. :
But thank you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You want a sombrero too? Sure, that shouldn't be too hard to add. Would need a separate texture though.

Regarding head models. I don't know. Inez, does your tool work for head models as well?

Regarding Stan. STAN!
(Where's Mikhail when we need him, with that avatar!?)

(And it sounds like I _really_ need to play MI4...eyepatch!?)

Nooooo, no sombrero!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I can switch heads if need be, but I'd rather not - I like him the way he is... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Man o' man! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Fred Bob keeps a hearin' dat Stan music in his head whene'er he be a lookin' at dis thread! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> (It be okay, Cat, he ain't gotta be no "Stan", jus' ye keep on a follerin' yer plan, don't mind ol' Fred Bob! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> )

Thanks Fred Bob, I was just trying to keep others from spending time doing up something I wouldn't use - I wanted the eyepatch, but not the sombrero. Actually there IS a model in PotC that can do a `head-switch` with searcher to get the sombrero, but I don't really like the look... My slick "handsome Harry" guy is exactly the effect I want... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I've been wondering something... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I dug up my old files and put them into the game to test them, and NO ONE is showing up ANYWHERE...
Did something with how to make characters appear in the game change from B11 to B12?
I have these files:
PROGRAMCharactersinitSneakyTraders.c
PROGRAMDIALOGSSneaky Trader_dialog.c (&.h)
RESOURCEMODELSCharacterssneakytr.gm
RESOURCEMODELSHeadsh_sneakytr.gm
RESOURCETexturesCharacterssneakytr.tga.tx
In the SneakyTraders.c file I have all the characters set up - one for each city - I copied it after the Item Traders.c file format.
This <i>should</i> work, as these are the same files as I had before B12... But no one is showing up anywhere. (yes, I started a new game to test) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
Have I missed something? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
Out shrimpin' right now so's cain't look meself, but ain't thar a character_init.c file somewhars? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> Would dat matter, Cat? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
It's taken care of by the Sneaky Traders.c file - presumably - at least it worked for B11. I was just wondering if I missed somewhere in B12 (different from B11) that I needed to add a reference to this - can't find it anywhere, and these guys are not showing up in B12.
Hope you're having a good day of shrimping, Fred Bob, it's lovely here, even with the coastal haze... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
Fred Bob, I checked that file, just in case, and you were right, I needed to add something to it - HOWEVER nothing happened - still no appearances. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />
Aside from that, I'd like to tell ya that you're "smarter than the average bear", <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Fred Bob! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> That definitely was a spot I'd missed! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Thank you! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flower.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ty" border="0" alt="flower.gif" />
Now I am sure there are more... I'm going to keep digging... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
Re: modelling. I'm still trying to figure that mother out; same problem as Cat, can't export the .obj's to .wrl (or rather, when i try they are unreadable)...
But I found some models of muskets and such, free ones to download. A whole bunch of new models. But even the ones in .wrl, I can't get exported. Someone want to help get at least a musket in the game?
<!--`QuoteBegin-Inez` Dias+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Inez Dias)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->TOOL & Head models: I think not; Cat already did some experimenting.
Inez, I didn't do anything about editing the models, just the skins - and I was trying to get a h_body and h_head to switch so I could make a talking head for the merged character...
I did not try to export anything MODELED to the game. Do you think Nathan could alter an existing h_head and export to gm it using your TOOL? I want the existing .gm file to be altered so he has an eyepatch... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
Catalina,did ye perchance drop de back up character file from previous build,into build12 character files,cause when I did this de Blacksmith wouldn't appear so remade new files in build12 an it werked fine, as Nathan said dropp'n a file from previos build into build12 is like dropp'n a win98 kernel into XP,it won't work <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
Regarding Stan. Well, I guess we know what our _next_ project will be, we `MI-heads`... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />
Regarding initialization: yep, there needs to be two things:
1. #include the sneakytraders.c file
2. Run the function that's in sneakytraders.c (i.e. InitSneakyTraders()<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
Otherwise POTC won't know to load your file or process it respectively.
If you're still having trouble, you can drop me a line and I'll have a peek.
Regarding heads. The problem is that the head would have to be bound to the head anim file (which takes mucho work setting up all the bone locators, AIUI).
It's exactly like the Item Traders file, only with the new characters.
<b>@ Skull -</b> I made new files using B12 files, nothing to change but a line or two copied and pasted and edited slightly. I don't know what might be different about the ones I copied. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
<!--`QuoteBegin-NathanKell`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(NathanKell)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->If you're still having trouble, you can drop me a line and I'll have a peek.
Thanks, Nathan... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> I'll muddle through it and hopefully find an answer myself... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />
<!--`QuoteBegin-NathanKell`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(NathanKell)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Regarding heads. The problem is that the head would have to be bound to the head anim file (which takes mucho work setting up all the bone locators, AIUI).
I see... Oh well... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> He'll just have to stick with the unpatched head for his "talking head", then. No worries, that'll be fine. I had to do something like that with my new skin for Danielle with the different head - original model had on a large circular collar that of course stayed with the "talking head" - so even tho it was my retextured head, it was the original body with (modeled) collar.
About Heads: it's true that you'd have to put the bone numbers in, and the tool can so far only do that for the standard (male) character model, not for heads.
BTW, it's *not* done via locators (the tool shows "bone locators" *only* for the modeler's orientation, they are *not* needed for the game and should *not* be exported. (Forgive me the asterisks, but this has been misunderstood before ...).
Alan, feel free to send me some of your .wrl files that don't get exported (preferably VRML 2.0). I'll probably be able to export them for you and in the process fix the tool, too, so that in the future you can do it yourself.
Whoops, sorry 'bout that Inez. Thanks for the correction. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Yeah, about heads: When I makea new head model and ani files for a mixed character, the head displayed durig dialogs uses my repainted face (after changing that reference in hexediting) but the regular upper half of the torso... Why would that be? There's only the one texture reference in the head model. EVEN when I repaint the body in the file I get the head from, it uses the original, unmodded body belonging to that head/character.
Yup Alan, that's exactly the trouble I've had. You CAN paint the "bottom part" of the texture to match what you have on your repainted texture for the whole figure, but if there's any kind of modeled collar or whatever on the bottom, you'll have to just live with it...
Here's what happened to my "Fanielle" model:
`fan-1`.jpg
See, I painted the bodice on the other skin (rename it for the .gm file) but could not lose that modeled collar. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />
<b>SMALL UPDATE</b> on my progress with the Sneaky Trader - I got them to finally appear, thanks to Nathan, who pointed out something I'd not known - that you have to make the character_init.c file LOAD your mod... I've NO CLUE as to how I ended up doing this when testing during B11. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Oh well, all is well and good, progress!
I'm beginning to think I've got another tutorial to write on this process, LOL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
Next dilemma I'm working on at the moment concerns an edit I made to a .wav file, as NOW it won't load up in the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />
If I ever actually get to the point where I can get these guys to SELL me an item I've made, it'll be a miracle! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Well, it'll be the product of hard work, anyhow. I'm just impatient! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
By the way, Cat -- I started writing dialog and placing charactes for one of my quest attempts... I wanted customsounds for my curiosities shop guy, but just adding him to the sound and greetings aliases makes my game crash. Am I missing something? What all did you do for the sounds in your FBQ?
I think it's the way Akella recorded the sounds - Fred Bob uses Maurikio's soundbyte from Sea Dogs, and Estrella also uses one from Sea Dogs. Any attempt by me to edit the soundbytes has ended in the sound either not playing, or the game crashing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Not sure why, but that's it... Try Sea Dogs for some different sound bytes...
wtf? they're all just .wav files, aren't they? and I have two Peter Sellers quotes I was so ready to use... I KNOW SD hasn't got anything like that.
So, suppose I sift through all the sound files and create my own greeting and character sound entries... is it just those two INI's to edit, or am I missing any other files?
(By the way, update with that ship interior mod -- I changed a few true/false values, and at first it killed the game, so I changed a few back, and I was able to get into my cabin while at sea and the other door links worked. But my game crashed while trying to exit. So, back to the drawing board...)
