Squire of the Sea

Has Purpure got another outfit now? Your latest picture shows the jacket, hat and trousers more bluish than earlier pictures.

PoTC can't do martial arts apart from simple fisticuffs but it can certainly do boardings! Has Purpure boarded Lucretia's ship, Lucretia boarded the Lotus, or are they on someone else's ship? And if Uncle Corrin is to be involved, what does he look like?

The darker outfit briefly replaces her normal outfit in the RPGMaker version due to her mourning someone's death on the pirate island.

Purpure boarded Lucretia's ship at the time as Lucretia arrested Uncle Corrin under suspicion of smuggling and treated him badly. As for Uncle Corrin's appearance I haven't made artwork of him per se, but he's inspired by a character from Puzzle Pirate's Box Edition.

The man in the scarlet captain's hat in the below image is known as Captain Coriander and was the inspiration for Uncle Corrin, but the image is an edited version to promote the now defunct Japanese servers.

PS: Uncle Corrin has no genetic relation to Purpure, it's a social quirk in Asian societies to refer to one's elders as uncles and aunties rather than Mr and Mrs Name.

Edit: Added some other images of Captain Coriander from various angles. In the RPGMaker version, Uncle Corrin has ties to the Kingdom of Basque as one of their privateers, and is pretty close to the Basque Crown. Their country is a constitutional monarchy far earlier than real life Spain's abolishment of their monarchy.

You'd probably notice that Coriander has a weatherbeaten jacket, especially on his hem. He gets that fixed in the RPGMaker version about halfway through Purpure's young life in pirate country.

Corrin sounds a bit like Charles Ardent in reverse! He's the player character (well, one of them anyway) in a storyline I wrote for PoTC some years ago. Corrin is friendly with Basque (Spanish) high society, is a privateer, and later is arrested for smuggling. Charles begins the game being arrested for smuggling or piracy, escapes, and later becomes friendly with a Spanish governor who gives him a Letter of Marque, i.e. a privateer commission. Being one of my first character textures, he's very similar to the original texture on which he's based, so I'm now considering changing his jacket to a brownish tan and his hat to red to make him more distinct. I can then use his model for Corrin as well. (But he won't get the skull and crossbones on the hat. Partly because it won't work well on a tricorne, but mainly because wearing a hat which says "I'm a pirate" is asking for trouble when he goes into a Spanish town to collect rewards for his privateering!)

How about another coincidence? Later in the story, Charles is arrested for a crime he didn't commit. After escaping in a small ship, he has to track down the impostor responsible in order to clear his name. It's not all that similar to Purpure's adventure, though - the crime is entirely different, the ship isn't a brig like Lotus though it is about the same size, and the true villain isn't the impostor but the man who hired him.

That was interesting to learn how certain settings have similar plotlines happen for different characters.

I imagine that seafarers lucky enough to have a tricorne as an independent person will get emblems of all kinds embroidered on them, or dye them wacky colours if left plain. For Purpure, her crew would get her tricorne embroidered with seed pearls to make a lotus mosaic.

On the left, a generic character model called "corsair1_4". On the right, Charles Ardent's original model, basically "corsair1_4" with a different face. I tried to brighten up the coat a little so it would show up more red, and in bright sun it sometimes does.

It's bothered me for a while now that Charles Ardent looks too similar to the original and Corrin finally gave me just enough of a push to make me do something about it. So, Charles Ardent's hat isn't quite as bright as Coriander's and his jacket still has the original trimmings and buttons:

He even has the faded sleeve as seen on the pictures of Coriander! "corsair1_4" has a slightly lighter area which showed up a bit more when I made the original "Ardent" model, and shows up even more on the lighter brown coat. How is Corrin's jacket fixed - patches on the elbows? If so, I could add those to Charles Ardent, with the added benefit of making him a little more different. In any case, if Corrin does make an appearance in PoTC, he'll be sharing Charles Ardent's model. There won't be any confusion, Ardent can't appear in Purpure's game and Corrin can't appear in Ardent's game.

(Update: new Ardent picture updated with different trousers.)

Corrin's jacket fix in RPGMaker is a contrasting trim on the hem of the jacket, as Coriander in Puzzle Pirates has a frayed hem on his. Feel free to place elbow patches on the PoTC version.

I've updated the picture of Charles Ardent's new outfit in the earlier post. It turns out that when he walks, his legs move through the back of the coat. It doesn't show up if the coat and trousers are almost the same colour as they were originally but it certainly shows up if they're very different colours. So now he has dark brown trousers; the problem is still there but not so obvious. And he's never getting Coriander's bright red and white striped trousers!

On the left is how the faded sleeve appeared. On the right is the sleeve with a patch. It's not quite the shape I added because of the way the texture is stretched over the model but it's close enough.

I've just seen "Deeptangle Brawl". The game doesn't have anything like that alpenstock, modified or otherwise. That is, not with such a long handle. It does have a pickaxe and a spade, which can be used as weapons though they're not all that effective. The spade even makes a "clang" sound if you hit someone with it.

Simon's only involvement in the game so far is when he leads Purpure through the jungle after breaking her out of prison. There won't be any fighting before they reach the pirate settlement, unless they're foolish enough to let Lucretia catch them, in which case it doesn't matter what weapons they're carrying, that's game over. Beyond that, Simon becomes an officer and the player can give him anything. So I could equip Simon with the pickaxe during the escape.

(One of these days, I'm going to have to insert a joke which I found in another, completely different game. You open a locked chest by picking the lock. With a pickaxe.)
