Released 20 gun privateer schooner

Another update, added the bulwark cap(shown in blue), the gunport lids, the pinrails and a other deck details, and rebuilt the part surrounding the transom with less polys. I think the hull is about 90% complete, all I have left are the headrails and chains/chainplates. The polycount is now 22504 polys, I hope that isn't too much!

any thoughts about the rearmost gunport? it is too close to the chase guns to arm, which is why I have it closed. Should I leave it like this, or might it look better partway or all the way open?

thanks! I have a few questions about the rigging, getting her ingame etc
1) how does one make ropes is there some special way of doing this so the can move as needed when the sails move with the wind etc?
2) when I make masts, do they have to be seperate models? or can I make them to the sailplan on the same model as my ship as long as my computer can take it? also what are mast locators and will I need to use them If I can make the masts on the ship? not really clear on this concept.
3) I have noticed ingame that even on new ships many ships share the same models/textures for boats, anchors, cannons and possibly some other things. does anyone know where I could find these?
4) what is a walk file? i assume it controls the motion of the ship, but I have no clue how to make one
help with any of these questions will let me get her ingame that much faster, so any help is greatly appreciated! :doff

Hey Captain Armstrong, to answer your questions I would say:

1. The ropes are controlled by making locators that tell the game where, how and what kind of ropes to use on the rigging.

2. You need to make the masts, standing rigging (deadeyes, ratlines, stays and shrouds) separate from the ship model for all the masts and spares otherwise you will not see the ship be dis-masted when another ship or fort take them out nor will you see the spares move with the wind.

3. You can find the models in: C:\Playlogic\Age of Pirates 2\RESOURCE\MODELS\Ships. And the textures are under: C:\Playlogic\Age of Pirates 2\RESOURCE\Textures or: C:\Playlogic\Age of Pirates 2\RESOURCE\Textures\Ships.

4. The walk files in PoTC or Sailorpoints in AOP CoAS are the ini files that tell the game where sailors can walk on the decks of the ship in first and third person sea views.

I as well as other moders know how to do all this and if you need help or want me to do the rigging, sails, walk/sailorpoints and other locator work that tells the game what it needs to know (such as lights, camera view, masts and other objects to the main model) just let me know.

small ship, a lot of big carronades.
oh oh... handling???
will be good as an escort or pirate, but less so as a merchant... :onya

Craiggo; Thanks so much for the help! I am not at that stage yet, but if you or any other modders could help me with/ make the locators, walk files, lighting etc when the time comes that would be amazing :onya just to be clear though;
1) are the ropes made like any other object,( i am thinking of using very long and thin cylinders) but have this affect applied to them by the game to make them ropes? does the same go for standing and running rigging?
2) this makes sense now, Thanks! will it matter if I have to make them in a different scale from the model? ( this is decided by the size of my sailplan) I should be able to find a way to rescale them if this is a problem.
3) Thanks! I have Potc, but it worked excactly the same. but I was wondering if there were seperate models for the items themselves. If not, how can I take them from existing models? I also do not yet know how t texture, but hopefully It won't be too much trouble to learn with the help of some tutorials
4) makes sense, I would probably need alot of time to figure this out, but if you or another modder is willing to do it that would help alot! :doff

@HundertzehnGustav; the Prince was probably one of the fastest ships in the world during the war of 1812, considering she was one of the best if not the best of the american privateer schooners (already one of the fastest types of their time), she would have had amazing handling. :cheeky definately not a merchant ship, more like the peak of war schooner design :dance

sure as hell...
there are many ships in the game that have had some kind of bizarre generic description "the frigate was built with only 1 purpose in mind"...

But looking at that schooner... it SO totally applies!

Now if the game would allow us to switch Cannons before an engagement (the two rear cannons could be switched to use the rearmost gun-port by the looks of things...)
she looks like a red hot knife through butter.
But i wouldnt want to get into a serious thunderstorm with her... relatively small, even if big for a schooner, no serious accomodations for my Captains arse, no nothing. Just a base fighting ship she is.
would not want to encounter one either.

where is the american nation? :keith

you know, i remember making a crapload of discriptions for every single ship type, but they seem to have ended up in the bin somehow.

just finished the headrails, pics below

....snip....

Looks really good to me. A nice and fast ship you have there. :onya
Btw would you like to give her some extra detail around the gunports? That are the parts you look at, the whole game and it is always nice to have some here and there to distract the eye on a long voyage. Only my 2 cents.

what sort of detail did you have in mind? I plan on using texturing for the hinges on the gunport lids, and I still need to add the chains & chainplates ( parts that hold up the deadeyes for the ratlines), anchor, and use the high detail game cannon for the chasers. other than that, the plans show no other new details as far as I can tell

Here have a look. The cannons, gratings etc. all have nice detail, only the inner hull fells a bit to plain compared to them. By connecting the upper and lower edges and then extrude or bevel the darker green parts outwards, you could easily and with an low amount of tris, add a good amount of extra detail. Hope the idea appeals to you.

P.S. I hope i didnt ruin your model with this itchy green paintjob

Alright, so I used part of your idea. I added the peice on the bottom inside bulwark, added the chains/ chainplates, and I also put pinrails on the bulwark like I saw in a model of the ship. I also took out the chase guns because I will replace them (once I figure out how) with ones that have been used on other models and are already textured. here are some pics:

I didn't put in the vertical gunport framing in because i havent really seen it much on ships of this era, and I couldnt find pictures of any models of this ship that had it. I think you were right though about it being too bare before, I like it much better now! :onya

"you know, i remember making a crapload of discriptions for every single ship type, but they seem to have ended up in the bin somehow."

here here. i have struggled too, to find a few precise and correct words for the ships in CMV, have refreshed terms and knowledge wiki and books were red...
but i never really got far, seeing there were such a monumental number of ships needing to be described.
Maybe i "saw" too big, maybe i should proceed in smaller steps and be less ambitious...
its not too late tho.

actually, i finished the discriptions. the were just rejected on the account of being considered too naval for the average player.

ok so to get any further, I still need help with;
1) how to make ropes
2) how to use parts of models from the other ships in the game (boats cannons etc)
3) I havent looked in to this in detail yet, but is photoshop required to make textures? would microsoft paint or something work?

negative...
the Textures are manipulated in TGA format, which MS Paint does not support.
Gimp or photoshop or corel draw will tho.

when the paint is done, it will be convertedto tgaX format and used like that in the game.

As far as i know you could model the shrouds in the same way as the rest of your model. As for the ropes i have to figure that out, too. As soon as i find somethink about, i inform you.

Your update turned out well. I like it. I wonder how she looks with texture dressed.
