WIP 38 gun frigate Hebe, 1782

Captain Armstrong

Shipbuilding Coordinator
Storm Modder
So of course I started in yet another project, and I figured it was about time to reveal it. :wp

Hebe class frigate, 38 guns, 1782
Dimensions:
Length on deck: 150’1.5”
Breadth: 39’11”
Depth in hold: 12’9”
Burthen: 1062 tons
Armament:
Gun deck: 28x long 18pdrs
Quarterdeck: 14x 9pdrs
Forecastle:4-6 32pdr carronades or long 9pdrs

This design by the French naval architect J N Sane was extremely popular in its time and was virtually the standard French frigate design of the Napoleonic wars. The British captured the Hebe herself, and built the Leda class of frigates http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f_TiAqdkqU4/S3hkjwnmIgI/AAAAAAAAA0k/Piut1XTEPRw/s1600-h/Fifth+rate+Leda+class+frigate+HMS+Pomone.jpg
to her design. Counting both French and English vessels, over a hundred frigates were built to this design.o_O

Two Leda class frigates survive to this day in Britain, the HMS Unicorn of 1824:

I used the stern of the Hebe’s sister Proserpine(later HMS Amelia) rather than the Hebe’s because the Proserpine’s draught was as captured and had a more French stern at that time. Progress will likely be slow and intermittent because I will be getting my other ships ingame.:keith

Thanks to Bava for constructive criticism and advice!:)

Have you caught the modelling bug from SeaNorris, or something? I'm finding it hard to keep track of all your ships! o_O

Anyway, I really like this ship. Lovely French stern. :onya
I read about the Amelia a while ago, and she had an impressive career, probably because the French design was so good.

Haha I guess so, I just wan't to finish the Endymion and get all of them ingame before the end of summer. but it is also fun to build them:p
Thanks! The Amelia certainly had an impressive career, as did the Sybille http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_frigate_Sibylle_(1792) It is remarkable that those two frigates were kept in service for the entire Napoleonic and French Revolutionary wars, when many british built frigates and especially other french prizes didn't last nearly as long. perhaps it is because they were built in peacetime, which would allow for better and stronger materials to be used and the like.

EDIT:
Oh and here's an update::keith

Very nice progress so far! :onya
There's just a couple of things I'd like to point out:
1) I can see you mirrored the entire hull, which is fine, but to save polys it would be better not to mirror the keel, but model it as a separate object. That way, you would also avoid the tiny gap through the centre of the keel which is visible with a lack of anti-aliasing.
2) The underwater hull UVs look slightly bland, and don't follow the lines of the hull. The keel looks especially odd, but if you model it as above it would be easier to modify the UVs to allow the planking to curve along it properly. Same applies to the rudder. Have a look at any of the PotBS ships to see what I mean. I know this would be easier said than done, but it would add that little extra authenticity to the model.

Anyway, your 'tigerstripes' incident kind of reminds me of the 'dazzle camouflage' used by navy ships in WWI. Time to rewrite the history books! "Dazzle camo invented in late 1700s." xD

Thanks!
1) that would make the whole mirroring process alot more complex, but I'll consider it for the future. I'll close that gap up in the places where it exists.
2)I think I'll redo the textures on the keel. I think I understand what you mean about following the curve of the hull, but I really am not sure that is possible, especially because the underwater UVs are attached to the above water ones that go up to where the yellow gunport strip starts. this is how I get the waterline to be so straight. I'll take a look at some POTBS ships though.
Haha the tigerstripes do look like that! that or Pirates of the carribean:modern warfare 2xD

It should be possible ;) Can we have a look at your UV layout?

Great! Now we need an A-tacs version. (In case we have to sail into any hostile arid-mountainous regions)

Very nice indeed! You certainly are getting quicker at modelling. If we could import the ships into the game at the same rate, we'd run out of space very quickly! xD

Haha thanks! wouldn't that be great?xD It will be awesome whenever I do finally get them all ingame, there will be so much more choice.

No really, we have a self-imposed limit of 256 unique ships, and as it stands for Beta 2.2, we can fit 45 more brand-new models/textured variants into the game.
So if we add up all of your ships and their variants, plus SeaNorris' mini armada in the works, plus a few more, we're gonna be tight for space. :p
It would be quite an achievement to reach the limit, though! :shock

oh wow! i didnt know, 256 is very specific:p lets see so Ive built 6 ships counting this one.. the prince will have no other variants, but all the rest will have 4 each I think (yellow, white, red, and plain wood) so thats 21 variants..count the Endymion which I will build next in there and thats as many as 25. luckily I don't have any immediate plans for future projects after the Endymion...though I have been eyeing some ships of the line. Maybe with all the new ships some variants of stock ships could be taken out? hell seanorris' fleet could replace all the stock cutters and schooners if necessary (or at least severely reduce their variations) my brig could reduce the amount of stock brig variants, my frigates could take out the lydia, your Russia could reduce the # of stock frigate variants...

speaking of which how is that tutorial coming along?

The limit is 256 because of the ships' interface screenshot textures. There are four large 8x8 grids which together make up a 16x16 grid, meaning up to 256 ship screenshots, so 256 ships. ;)

Replacing stock ships is definitely the way to go, in most cases. My intention is for the Rossiya to replace all stock frigates except the black quest frigate Mefisto, which is pretty unique. I'll upgrade that one to a lesser extent, like the corvettes, instead. As for the Lydia frigates, we only have US_Lydia remaining, and I'd be happy to see her replaced with one of your new frigates.
Your brig would be great to replace at least one of the existing ones, as long as you can give it a generic plain-wood texture alongside any national textures.
I can certainly see some of SeaNorris' ships replacing some of the smaller stock ships, and since they're the most common, that would be a great improvement to the game's atmosphere!

What sorts of ships of the line are you thinking of? Something mid-sized to replace the 'Warship' (stock 'Fearless') class would be nice. :wp

I have almost finished the tutorial about editing locators in Excel, so I'll let you know when that's uploaded. I'll then look into the other tutorials that are needed.

Aha, so its just a limit of interface screenshots? that will be great to see the Rossiya replace the stock frigate variants!:)
I definately can give my brig a generic wood texture, there should be some screenshots of it in her thread already.
Seanorris' fleet certainly will be something to behold once it is finished! I would think the Centurion replaces the Fearless pretty well herself. I was actually thinking of building a large 74 or an 80.

Great to hear about the tutorials! cant wait to get started:keith

I'd be really interested in seeing an 80, since we already have Bellona and Le Superbe.
