A Parrot in need

If you could change the colors on the wings and feet that would indeed be very helpful.

Movement: yes, I mean from the animation. It's the same place as before, where the wing meets the body: a trianglge of the body seems to move with the wing and leaves a hole. But don't worry, I'll somehow cope with that.

That's very odd, because having the vertices welded should prevent that; no matter where a vertex moves, the face will still be visible, it'd just be stretched.

Hmm. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->the face will still be visible, it'd just be stretched<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's of course true, so my assumption obviously wrong - but still there is the hole. I'll try to come up with a better explanation and/or post a screenshot when I've slept some.

Heh. I'm not saying you're not seeing what you obviously _are_ seeing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
I'm just puzzled.

Catch you tomorrow. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I don't want to interrupt the really exciting work that's going on, but I had to pop in to say how great this project looks to be coming along. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> You guys are amazing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

Has anybody come up with a name for this bird yet? "Cap'n Flint" may be a little trite or overused, but I still think it's a good name. Personally, I always wanted to have a parrot that I would name, "Dr. Pangloss" that I would keep in a cage and train to say the phrase, "This is the best of all possible worlds!" (Actually getting a parrot and training him to do that would really be carrying a joke too far. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" /> )

A bird as colorful as this one is shaping up to be should have a vocabulary that is just as colorful, I also think it would be funny if the bird could say things that get you into fights, so here is my submission for the parrot's,
Parrot_dialog.h.tx . :par

I like that Pangloss the Parrot thought. Candide was probably one of my favourite books, evar. I shall make him the pet of my `Jean-Leon` Voltaire pirate character...

Awesome, Sir Chris! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

We can add those checks I think--if soldier nearby, trigger parrot saying that, etc.

I'm confused tho... I started work on #3, now is there a new version with yet other texture maps? A left and a right wing? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

There are currently 3 mapping versions. All are in the Parrot.zip archive on the FTP; use whichever you like best because the _geometry_ is identical, just the mapping's different.
(The original mapping, one where the head and neck is a separate texture and separately cylindrically mapped--"2cyl"--and one that uses planar maps for the body (one for the side, one for the bottom and underside of the tail, one for the front, and one for the back/top and topside of the tail)--"planar"

I'm using version #3. So I'm okay then? I hope I can get the eye to look normal with that one. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Sir Christopher, that's great! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Nice going Cat <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Until we can get a gm file and one single tga for it, I'm out of the skinning.

I have no ability to 3D model/map anything.

The gm file's up on the ftp. And you don't need a single tga, you can paint on the images Nathan has provided. The model know what goes where.

Thanks Inez.

The last time I tried, some weeks ago, the Parrot.zip had *.3ds and not *.gm files.

I'll try the new one.

<b>Petros</b>, so sorry, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />
I thought I had it uploaded on the ftp, but I had only put in on my homepage. It's on the ftp now (file parrot_gm.rar). That one also has my first try at an animation.
It's not Nathan's new version yet, I'll convert that tonight, but that should not make a difference for texturing, because the geometry is the same.

Petros, download and install 3D Exploration from the PA files section. It will let you view the 3ds files with their textures applied.
I highly recommend going that route, because eventually we'll combine the various separate textures into one texture page and convert that to tga.tx (and because you get to choose which mapping style you prefer, there are three versions in 3ds form).

The new version (take 4) is fine, I could now easily apply the bones.
Still has a hole below the wing, and I still don't know why. Could it be that some trianlges have no material and are therefore invisible? Like, because they were below the wings, you missed them when applying the material ?

I was working with the "sitting" version, but upon the above thought I checked the "flying" model, and indeed the hole is where that has the wings attached. I thougt that maybe I'm just seeing the inside of those polys, but that's not it, I can see right through it to the wing on the other side.

Maybe I should make the animation so that this part always stays connected.

Ya, that is weird. STL check reports no errors, so we know that at least in Max the mesh is solid...Are you going from 3ds to wrl before you go to gm?
If so, can you send me the wrl and let me take a peek at it? Maybe VRML has some different way of dealing with vertices?

I can export to obj/mat if you prefer, or some other format than 3ds...
