A Parrot in need

I go from 3ds to VRML and then to gm (can't directly read 3ds yet). It looks ok in gm as long as it's not animated. I could send you the wrl, but you wouldn't see the hole because it's not there when not animated. I'll check the number of trianlges in each sub mesh.

Reloaded the wrl into max and took the wing off - there's the hole. Looks like the welded vertices get unwelded on export because they have different materials.
In a way that's comforting, because VRML seems just like me to have the notion that one mesh can only have one material, and one point only one set of texture coordinates. Appearently you and Max see that differently, but at least I know now why I thought so.
Maybe my modleling capacities suffice to fix that by hand in Max.

Actually per email it seems that VRML unwelds _all_ vertices.
But I see from the file it does at least separate vertex and face defines.
OBJ can I believe properly handle welding; let me check, BRB.

Yeah, I guess I'm pretty used to looking at 3D through a max perspective. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />
A number of object formats don't support more than one material per object, quite right.

Yes, OBJ can handle multiple materials per object, thank goodness!

Okay, here's another shot at the parrot, this is the planar version, which I think works out pretty well, although I got confused about which was what when looking at the front and back maps and painted a tail up the front of his chest, LOL! (fixed it, heh!)

Got the eye in the right spot, and it isn't distorted anymore, yea! The beak needs a bit of fixing, tho, and some color doesn't match up. And of course, there's the feather detail to add once I get all this straightened out...

I'm beginning to think that it would be really nice to have this all in one image map - like PotC - so the colors will match a lot more smoothly... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Petros, do what I did when I started this - fire up 3D Exploration, then work on the skin via your graphics program - when you save the skin.tga, the program automatically updates it so you can paint, save, and switch to see what you've done.

Also, if you can, work in layers - I took the texture map and gave it a transparent background, then painted using it as a template but never painting over it... You can save without it, and use it again for more skins later! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I couldn't start with a simple GREEN parrot, no, I had to start with a complicated one! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> After this one, the rest will be EASY! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Neat! Very nice indeed! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Doh! I forgot to `opacity-map` the tail (and the wings!)
OK, let me export again... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

You may find the 2cyl version the best, because it still allows asymmetrical plumage, and doesn't have the `switch-from`-`1-mapping`-`to-another` artifacts so much.

Heh, thanks... It's been fun to do, but I keep thinking how EASY a simple green parrot - maybe with a bit of yellow on the face and some red on the wings - would have been... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I rather liked the head map on #3 (planar), Nathan! That's why I chose it. It was easier to see where the beak was - I'd had trouble with the other, that way.

"...Let me export again..." Does this mean I need to download it again? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Hmm. What if the head is planar and the body cylindrical?

Re: download. Yeah, sorry. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> I'll add an opacity map to the tail and wings, so you can use the alpha channel on the TGA (or eventually the tga.tx) to make the feathers.

cant wait to get the game again! i lost it...man, so like, where is the parrot gonna be at? walking with you? flying around? on ur shoulder? if hes on ur shoulder, how do you get him to do that?

That might work, yes! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

heh, kind of like tricking out your prey by hanging canvas along the sides that looks like a merchant.

(...what about a stock of ruses to play in the game? Since there's talk about redoing encounters on the map... what if you do something like the above to attract a merchant ship to you instead of having him run away?...)

Alan: neat!

Cat: I'm going to export once more, this time with all textures on one page. Hopefully that'll kill two, um, things, with one stone, both having the mapping right for you and fixing the subobject problem.

Heh, thanks, Nathan... I'm really eager to see others working on this too, I mean, we can have all manner of parrot - there are soooo many different varieties... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I like the idea, Alan, it can go along with raising another country's flag as a decoy, hm? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I have often thought that an encounter with a FRIENDLY nation's ship should involve the exchange of messages, like the rumors in town... Maybe something like that could be developed?
