Age of Pirates Revealed!

<!--QuoteBegin-The_Old_Buccaneer+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(The_Old_Buccaneer)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And then there is PTOC which was supposed to be Seadogs II in the first place. Everything they are promising now, including multiplay and open endedness, were promised for that game and look what we got when they sold out to Disney.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

All the stuff with POTC was not really 100% Akella's fault. We had the game 85% finished, but then Bethesda tells that guys have like a three months not only to finish the game, but also rewrite the story (+scripting the quests), change some features, make one of the characters an NPC etc.

This time it's not going to happen.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->This time it's not going to happen.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I can believe that Bethesda may be cupable in the deal with Disney. They helped kill another fine game from a developer in Eastern Europe through some contractual dispute. The developer was Madia and the game was a futuristic flight sim called Echelon.

One can only hope what you say is true, but the bottom line is, to date, I am out a total of $130 for the unplayable AOS II, its worthless Prima strategy guide, and the unfufilled promise of Seadogs 2 that became PTOC.

Anyway---Good luck, I hope you pull it off this time.

Get the original Age of Sail, it is so much better. It really amazes me how far backwards they went with AoS2 with the graphics, animation, gameplay, etc.

Disney, Bethesda, and not enough time to do it *right*. I know, I've dug into the code - and even after many other modders have gone over it, there are still things I am finding that seem truncated, snippets of code that don't (as far as I can tell) do anything or go anywhere... It's not because of an intentionally shoddy job on Akella's part - things were reversed or taken out or CENSORED due to Disney... Well...

The community of fan modders here have been working on some great additions and fixes to PotC, and the Russian fan modders have made an <i>incredible</i> `add-on` package that we are currently working on translating - but I for one as a fan modder will say that I am THOROUGHLY interested in the new games coming out of Akella - not only the pirate ones, but in particular the Knights of the Seas PT boat game which looks AWESOME... I know this company does good work...

Any research at all into what happened to PoTC shows that Akella got an `un-fair`, and short end of the stick. What is amazing to me about PoTC, is even with what happened, Akella managed to get a really good game out. They didn't get the game they wanted to get out, but I think it all worked out alright in the end.

From what it looks like to me, Akella is now moving into a position where they can throw their own weight around, and are gaining the ability to follow their plan first and formost, because now they can afford too. I am really looking forward to Age of Pirates. I want to see what happens when Akella takes their talent, and makes Akella's pirate game.

(And I am really, really looking forward to Metal Heart: Replicants Rampage, I have a feeling that that game is going to sneak up behind the game industry and make people remember what it is like to play a first rate CRPG.)

EDIT: Just gave it some thought, and it is very cool of Alex to be posting on these boards. Most video game companies, you don't get the chance to talk to anyone "on the inside" even on the companies own forums, let alone a fansite that is not even entirely devoted to that companies games. Keep up the good work.<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Thought I would share.

Well, very nice Information here, and thanks to Keith for continuesly trying to push the envellop <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

@The Old Buccaneer, I am not sure if you are the very same that I met over at the LIB. But if you are, I somewhat surprised that you are not aware of the realities which led to SDII becoming POTC.

Personally, ever since I started Playing Sea Dogs, I was mesmerised by its potential and depth, not to mention the heart that was put in that game.

Its what pushed me so much to want to mod and perpetuate such a great game in the first place. The way I see it, it is the great games that we want to Mod, and not the ones that are forgotten after 2 months.

And Sea Dogs even today is considered "The" Pirate RPG/Sim, and there is still mods that are being published for it.

I can say with outmost certainty that my satisfaction with both playing Sea Dogs and Moding Sea Dogs has been a great adventure. One that has permited not only countless hours of Fun, but also, through it all, I got to meet new people and make very good new friends aswell.

And that quality of bringing people together that then go on and create communities of their own, such as LIB, such as COP, such as PA and many others, can only be the result of something Good. And the game was not only great, it was Good.

Beleive it or not, even Sea Dogs had its frustrations, through months and month fiddling with its files one finds things, realises things. And I believe that even Sea Dogs was under pressure to release. One could see evidence of the Devs wanting to incorporate elements that we now take for granted in POTC and eventually in AOP, yet these elements that never made it to the public, were and are evidence of the pioneering spirit.

And in that same pioneering spirit a bunch of modders gathered together and perpetuated this great Legend of a Game, that almost everyone else had abandoned, in the forums we all have visited once or twice, the Leggion of Independent Buccaneers.

POTC, may have been thrusted in to the market and hampered by the haste to make a quick buck of people who were pulling the strings, in the name of popularity. But it also was created with the hard work and heart of the same people that brought us Sea Dogs.

And now, I am personally more than elated to see the potential of creation, and the Vision of these people, finally get its fare share to express itself!

Looking forward to it all with great anticipation, however, I would also have to say, that it would be better to have a later and more solid release than a speedy and shaking release!

We are not going to be sailing anywhere else!

Cheers to all! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yes, I am the same Old Buccaneer that posted to both the Lib and the Old Seadogs forum.

And I am totally aware of the events that led up to PTOC since I was also a huge fan of the first Seadogs, and I followed the development of the sequel from the time it was announced. I kept Akella's SD 2 site permanently bookmarked and visited it every single day.. I also was perplexed as release date after release date was missed with no explanation or comment from Akella.. I also visited the Bethesda SD2 site, but much less because I did not like what I saw as things developed.

Has everyone forgotten that long before Disney deal, Akella unceremoniously dropped multiplayer from SD 2 and then simply lied that they never ever promised it or really even intended to include it. They continued to stick to this story in spite of the fact that there were printed interviews at several sites where they bragged about how great multiplay would be. Also there was the convoluted control scheme that one can only attribute the the fact that they cut a deal to put the game out on the `X-box`. Disney had nothing to so with this either. Maybe all of this is Bethesda's fault too, but one can never be sure.

PTOC was simply an unfulfilled promise regardless of what the root problems were and I not even going talk anymore about AOS II because my blood pressure is already too high.

I really do hope they deliver the new game that they are promising, and I truly wish them luck, but from the fact I have been burned at least twice by their products, I will definitely wait until the reviews are in before I spend my hard earned cash.

Cheers

hmmm.. I wouldn't be toooo happy about this new game AOP, because since they are going to use the same engine, they are conflicted with also the same limitations that will not satisfied our expectations I think. If you read the interview good, than you come to the conclusion that there are very small things they will improve of POTC. for me, a piracy game is a world with unexpectations with no limitations etc (like in GTA san andreas).. I think that those games will always do the trick.

<i>PA!: How many Islands are included, is it the whole Caribbean?

Renat: Game features 16 colonized islands. Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Tortuga, Dominica, `Marie-Galante`, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St.Martin, St.Eustatius, Curacao, Barbados, Montserrat, Antigua, Nevis and St.Kitts. We also were eager to create continental coastline but engine restrictions forced us to abandon this idea.</i>

ok that is really positive <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ...more islands just like it should be.. 6 is wayyy to short

<i>PA!: Can you literally sail to other islands without going to the mini map (ala POTC)?

Renat: No. There was no such feature, neither in Sea Dogs nor in POTC. And we are not going to do this in AOP.</i>

hmmm why not ????... I mean this is just what I mean with the crappy limitation.. it may cause the developpers some more effort but it's really worth it,.. POTC the basic is great but you always have the feeling that you always walk between walls you can't see.. very rare `walk-limitations`... please upgrade this to a large scale ! .. that will give the gamer much more freedom !! that's a garantee !

<i>PA!: Will more than 4 ships be kept at one time?

Renat: No, four ships is an optimal number. If we add more ships the game will become a strategy and that is not what we want for AOP.</i>

hmm ok,.. this doesn't bother me.. easy to modificate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

<i>PA!: Will we have a pirate "empire" like we had in the corner of the map in Sea Dogs, or will we have just a couple of small lawless towns that pirates can dock in for minimal supplies (which is more accurate)? Also, I have not researched this, but if there was a true "black market" back then, would that be included too?

Renat: There will be no pirate settlements in AOP (unless the player creates any by assigning his officer as the governor of captured settlement). We use the second proposed idea - player can dock in small towns and make trades there. The only "black market" in the game is a `slave-trading`. But we are not sure if this feature will be included in some releases (especially in the US version).</i>

this is also weird, no pirates elements??.. come on!.. what is a history game settled in the carribean without pirates <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> ..add this please.. it was also in seadogs so why not in AOP :S ...very lacky guys

<i>PA!: What will be able to be customized easily by the average player in regards to player customization (hair, clothes, complexion, gender)

Renat: Nothing for `single-player` game. We have two main characters the player can choose from and for whom he will play.</i>

guess we need the wardrobe mod again <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

<i>PA!: What improvements to the AI have their been?

Renat: We improved naval ship tactics. Now, naval battles are going to be a real challenge.</i>

I heard this before <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> ...

<i>PA!: What is the main difference between AOP and Pirates of the Caribbean?

Renat: The main difference is "That's another game". We understand that people will be comparing AOP with POTC, but actually they are absolutely different. POTC was a linear `plot-driven` game. AOP is `non-linear` `open-ended` game. AOP features living game world with unbounded gameplay freedom. </i>

supprise me !.. for me it looks the same (because of graphics and very small upgrades).. I hope I'm wrong !

<i>PA!: What ships will be included into AOP?

Renat: Manowar, Battleship, Warship, Lineship, Frigate, Pinnace, Galleon, Corvette, Brig, Fleut, Caravel, Barque, Schooner, Sloop and Lugger</i>

realllyyyy frustrating this one <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" /> they are going to make this "new" game and don't even going to put new ships in it :S.. lame guys,.. very lame!

<i>PA!: Will there be a `co-op` mode?

Renat: If you mean a cooperative play of the `single-player` game - no. Making it is kind of making an online game. Sooner or later we'll make the great online pirate game but not this time.

PA!: Will multiplayer include fighting on land also (fencing)

Renat: No.</i>

well, play this game online wasn't my dream.. I know it was a request of some of you, but this new feature is @ my opinion very unnecessary, it's not the key for making this a good pirate game, because they aren't going to use cooperative play of the `single-player` game... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> if you do internetgaming, do it right in the first place <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> that spares us a lot of lacktations for the singleplayer mode <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<i>A!: Will the scripting be similar to POTC and easily available to modify aswell?

Renat: Yup!</i>

good,.. goood ! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

ok so far the interview, there restes me only a few questions left, and that is, is it now standard to enter your cabin??.. can you now enter the lower decks etc to make sea battles more interesting ??.. this new "freedom" thing on what scale is it going to be?.. can you now actually SEE ships in the harbor while your on land ???.. maybe some shipwrecks @ the bothem of the sea woulnd't do bad you know <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> to find treasures for example?

okay this was it,.. my maintance to came here to this forum (also the LIB) was because of POTC and seadogs.. like suraknar said both games have very big potential,.. and also the lot's of work they put in it (except for POTC)

I hope I didn't was to negative about this "new" game :p I just hope that they will deliver @ once good job for us <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> like it should be !

ciao !

What I really can't understand is that why people are happy with sailing on global map in Sid Meier's Pirates and unhappy with sailing on global map in POTC and AOP.

Also, I can't imagine what features lower decks can add to the gameplay...

P.S. And no one ever said that there won't be pirate elements in AOP. There won't be pirate <b>settlements</b> in the beginning of the game...

well, since it has been TOO much requested, think I got there a point right <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> wel for example you can see you canonneers are doing their job and you can order them things ??.. like you can individual asign them to reload with grapes.. the other with bombs etc... just a thought <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ..anyway,.. giving acces to the lower decks is just a really cool fun thing,.. it doesn't really have to have a function.. just more fun and realism !... adding "sfeer" to this game wouldn't also be bad ?.. like I said shipwrecks and stuff,.. the more things they add.. the better it CAN be,..

/*EDIT*/ ah before I forgot,.. I hope you do agree with at least the function to enter your cabin by standard,.. and then I do <u>not</u> mean always the same cabin "room" (like the one we do have now in POTC,.. but it's better then nothing <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) no!, for a small ship a small cabin, large ship a big one etc.. I don't think I have to tell the features for this one, that is clear enough I think,.. like talking with your officers on sea for example,.. adding things to your treasurebox etc <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I think some here are getting a little spoiled and asking a bit too much from Akella. If they added EVERY SINGLE THING that people on this board complained about, then the game wouldn't be released for another 5 years. I say just give us a great open ended game with great graphics. Add some new features, yes, but above all just give us the open ended part of the game. The modders I'm sure will take care of the rest, as they did with POTC.

I think many are being unfair to Alex L. as well. He is busting his butt to get us that `kick-arse` mod in English. If/when that is complete, POTC could be the best sailing/pirates game ever made (with the added mod of course). That is, i if the mod is what it is cracked up to be, and I really don't see how it could not be.

So Alex L., keep up the good work. I know you guys got screwed over with POTC, good to see you are working so hard on AOP. Just give us an open ended game and we'll take care of the rest. well, look @ sea dogs one,.. you had also the same calibers of ships classes but then only on very large scale.. you had more choose for ships .. like example, you could choose between 6 man'o'wars.. in POTC only 2.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Renat answered our question with the TYPE of ship - he did not say how many of each type would be available.

Two MOW's? In STOCK PotC there may be only two MOW models, but modders have added any number of new ship skins, and each represented country has their own stats on their ships... And if you know how to model, you can MAKE a new MOW or any other kind of ship to put into the game.

Haven't you been playing the modded PotC? I'm kinda glad there's been room to "play" in making new ship skins & putting them into the game. I'm looking forward to more of the same in AOP! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

What would be cool is if you could turn off the "running lights" on your ship - if you wanted to sneak up on someone in the dark... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

For Alex L.

I think the reason alot of people want to be able to sail between islands in these games, and they don't mind in games like Pirates!, is that these games put you in a realistic sailing simulation, and having the ability to see if you can manage your ship all by yourself while actually sailing for those great distances would be a huge addition to gameplay.
And Akella's games make the sailing look so much better then Pirates!
In Sea Dogs, and PoTC you are a captain on your ship immersed in the game world (until you need the world map.
In Pirates!, you are playing a strategy game, and you are not immersed in the same way, you are not the captain on the ship, you are a game piece being moved around a board.
Since Akella games are more imersive, and focus on RPG elements over the strategy game play mechanics, the world map transition screen take you out of the game.

Not that it is going to effect my purchase. The interface has been changed, and that is enough change for me all ready.
