Anyone thought about cats

Nitasa

Landlubber
i like the ideal but seems no one is realy modding this game..with anything but ships..best probly to learn russian and play there version of the game they have some sweet mods

I suppose one could make a new item, call it a cat, give it similiar properties at the rat totem. The only new item I've seen around here is a map, perhaps it would be possible to see how that person made the map and then try to make a cat out of it.

I think I might look into this topic this weekend or next week, though one thing that's on my mind is, where am I going to get a cat picture that blends in with the icons? :shrug

Does the build mod have a cat picture somewhere?

I am not realy sure..But an ideal i had is to make it like a side quest to get..like it came from the far east on a trader ship..and the trader does not know what to do with the poor little thing if you help him you can have the cat =)..wish i was not so comp dumb =) and could make mods..realy would not have to be a new quest but randomly given instead of money on the escort missions if thats posible..just thoughts is all =)

A side quest would be awesome, but thats beyond my knowledge :shrug

So far, I think the files I need to mod are the:

ItemsDescribe (describes the item)
initItems (where it's found, name, picture etc)

The odd thing is, under the rat totem, as far as I can see I don't see anything that gives it it's anti-rat properties. :facepalm

I'm guessing there might be another file I need to find.

I will help look i am still searching for a few things my self..its like things are not placed where they should be in logic/pout

Code:
makeref(itm,Items[n]);
itm.id = "indian11";  // rats god
itm.name = "itmname_indian11";
itm.describe = "itmdescr_indian11";
itm.model = "";
itm.picIndex = 11;
itm.picTexture = "ITEMS_5";
//	itm.shown = false;
// boal 19.01.2004 -->
itm.price = 5000;
itm.Weight = 1;
// boal 19.01.2004 <--
itm.minlevel = 5;
itm.rare = 0.001;
n++;

That's from the initItems file for the rat god. Perhaps we could just copy that, change the name to cat or something, find a suitable picture and make it less rare?

=)that would be nice..yay for kittys..now back to looking for a way to edit Liza to have fight animation trying to make a female trader=)

Why not use one of the Danille's? I think you'll need the character expansion mod, or whatever it's called, the link is on here somewhere.

Using the Gm_Viewer you can see what I'm talking about, Danille3 looks kind of like Liza.

Thats what i did i found a few more modles of her and beatrice..1 with Beatrice with no jacket and the same modle but she has purple shirt and black pants=)Danielle had 5 the 2 that can with the mod and 1 all black out fit a gold jacket with white(thats my merchant)and 1 red outfit no so good looking stays in the dresser=)..all modles can be found in build 14..to bad its a glitchy game nice mods on a buggy platform=(..but i still want a merchent in a very nice dress =) i will just have to wait till everone starts modding this game more(stops her foot and pouts)

Ship Mates, I'm really glad you're taking a look at this. My original post never made it in. For some reason just the subject line popped up.

I was thinking a lot on the same lines as Officerpuppy with the rat god attributes given to some object. I was trying to find a virtual cat model, but the only ones in the virtual model libraries I have access to are dead cats - we obviously want to find a simple live one if even just a gif or sprite we could plop in.

My thoughts centered around all the little mice running around the villages and holds of ships. Wouldn't it be neat to see cats chasing them from time to time.

The other thing I wanted to mention were a couple of historical anecdotes concerning cats on ships. Cats were not some rarety. On the contrary they were very common. I'm no great cat lover, but a stickler for historical authenticity, not to mention that the rats in COAS are just damn annoying. Don't you hate when you've almost got to your destination and the rats eat a bunch of the supplies you were supposed to deliver to the merchant. I've gotten a kick out of some of the things they manage to ruin like weapons, etc.

Historically the superstitions associated with cats have made for some really interesting stories. Lots of great content here for prospective story lines in future COAS/POTC mods. Sailors considered cats to be almost from another plane and it was considered very bad luck to to display ill will for, harm or provoke a cat. They were thought of as feminine and their every move and gesture was watched and studied by sailors. It was believed that cats could smell the wind and could "carry a gale in their tail". If a cat appeared uneasy or yowled it was trying to raise the wind. All kinds of behaviors we would think normal for a cat like playing with string (a lanyard) was thought to provoke a storm. If a cat licked its tail or sneezed it foretold rain. If it stretched so it's paws touched or sat with its tail to the galley fire it foretold of bad weather. If it licked its fur the wrong way it meant bad luck for the ship and if it climbed into the rigging the ship was doomed! On the other hand if it washed itsself strangely or slept on its back, it meant calm weather.

If a sailor provoked or harmed or threw a cat overboard it meant a storm for sure - "to kick a cat would bring a tempest".
One story recorded in the early days of the US Colonial Navy has it that a tragic series of incidents occured from a sailor killing a cat. One man died and another broke his arm on duty. The crew discovering that a cat had been deliberately killed the night before demanded action be taken against the man, and were certain the incidents were directly related. The officers had the man flogged in an attempt to calm the crew, and the man was thereafter so shunned that he had to be put off the ship.

Another incident has it that as a ship was making final preparations to embark, several sailors and passengers witness the ships cat carry her litter of kittens off the ship. The observers were so spooked that they refused to leave with the ship and their lives were saved as a result. The ship sank in a hurricane the very next day. There are other stories as well of ships cats leaving the vessels and the ships never making it to their destinations or being found abandoned.

So you see cats would have been aboard not only to contend with the rats, but to also act as fortune telling barometers. Just as seeing rats leaving ships, seeing cats leaving as well meant a doomed ship. Superstitious sailors waiting to sign on a voyage would often watch the ships for a day or two looking for signs before selecting his ship.

I'm just scratching the surface here folks. Several of these anecdotes come from a great book: Superstitions of the Sea, by James Clary published in 1994 ISBN: 0-916637-00-X

I'd love to see cats in the game. :will MK

I hope something becomes of this.Think its a great ideal and thx very much for the history was neat to read might just have to look into that book=)Realy think this game could blosom into something great=)

Adding animations to a character that doesn't have them is tricky business, whether it can be done or not, I don't know, that's beyond my knowledge. Good luck. :onya

In regards to the cat, some of that would make a good item description. So far, I think since the cat won't have a model and just be an item, that should make things a bit easier, but I still don't know how the rat god gets it's anti rat properties.

xD:

Its a shame that in order for the iteam to work the character has to carry the iteam at al times, since the rat god removes rats from the ship shouldn't the iteam be stored on the ship?

Just my opinion but how do you get a stored iteam to work as if you was carrying it and is that possible?

So far I have most of the files which I think will add the item to the game, I'm working on the image right now, once that's done I'll test it in game for the first time and hope it not only works, but that I actually find the cat so I know if its working or not. :shrug

Update:
Betacat.jpg

I've gotten the item description to show but the picture isn't working, plus the rat god properties aren't working either so it defeats the purprose of the cat. There must be another file somewhere that gives special items its properties.

Update2:I gave it the default rat god picture since the custom picture wasn't working. Oddly enough it seems to work now, but I'm not 100% certain.

@Nitasa: Since you started the thread I'll PM you with the link to the mod in it's beta form. Just sail around a while and see if it works or not. I don't know if you need to start a new game or not. I think you can cheat using the debug and give yourself the item if you can't find it in a store.

If it works then I'll upload it to the FTP on here for everyone else. :will

Update3: I got the custom picture working, but it still doesn't have the bloody anti-rat properties. :facepalm

Although frankly I don't really see the point of adding an item that you get via a side quest and that keeps the rates away when we already have an item that you get via a side quest and that keeps the rats away. What's wrong with the totems?

Do i see a cat playing around on deck in a near future... well... possibly near future ?
OP... since you've got hands on it... can you make it a non unique item, so that companion officers can have one to ?... after all i dont think there was just one cat in the whole Caribbean... :shrug
BTW... i do hate rats drinking half my rum and not inviting me to such a party...
