Beta 7 Bugs

Ok, I'll avoid doing that then!

One more possible bug I've got is that while I pay my crew a monthly salary, I never seem to have to pay my officers. Given there's a quoted salary on the character screen, I figured I'd be paying them that amount monthly as well as the crew.

This has meant I just pick up every officer I come accross. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Edit:

Okay, I had a look at the code, and it looks like you only pay for active officers on your ship, and the other ship captains. (at 1/5 and 1/2 salary respectively)
This does mean that extra officers you set to serve on your other ships, as well as un-assigned officers, don't get paid. Maybe something to look at for build 14.

Yeah i think this only paying active officers is a longstanding bug with PotC - and you're right that its been addressed for a future build, along with completely revamping how officers work ingame <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ahoy! i'm part of Beta7 bugtesting now(they've been going by so quick - thanks to hook+hat ,a great combination in name and deeds <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> )

hmmm..... "The Hook&Hat" a most deserving name for a pub in cornwall methinks!

<b>Bugs/Issues</b>

<b>1.Bug(minor)</b> NONE ISSUE - install screwup.

<b>2.Bug(medium)</b> NONE ISSUE - install screwup.

<b>3.Interface/keys/sugestion:</b> move the initialise key('I') to somewhere else. with lootings using the 'O' key i find it a regular occurance(in the heat of a battle) that i hit 'I' too often. Or use a different key for looting?
On the same note the 'Ctrl' that is used quite often('block' on land/spyglass at sea) is uncomfortably close to the 'windows' key that can put you out the game and into the desktop, which gives you a black screen and no means of getting back to the game(no save/no clean exit etc). I can just re-arrange the keys myself, but i'm thinking that as these are defaults they could do with some looking at?

<b>4.Issue/Gameplay:</b> NONE ISSUE - install screwup?

<b>5. Gameplay/Suggestion:</b>

<b>A.</b> Consider making the perk 'Trustworthy lad' require both 'basic trade' and 'advanced trade' perks as pre-requisites? easily sellable illegal goods in town stores can overbalance the amount of money you can make in one trip at game start imo?
This would make it a speciality perk for the experienced quartermaster Officer, she now knows her way around the trade stores - people now trust her etc? And it makes it less likely the player just picks it at some point for the cash benefit, you have to invest important ability points in trade first.

<b>B.</b> Consider reducing the amount of skill points the player gets per level up. make it +1 skill +1 ability per level(for all difficulty levels?).
This will not only stretch out the char development of the game, but has the added side benefit of making those items that bestow skill bonuses much more usefull items to find/buy and not just for the player char. As we develope officers their special items(think Doctors tools etc) will come into play more.

<b>C.</b> Consider reducing massivley the effect a high luck score has on pretty much everything in the game(it seems that way?) - it's probably just a simple multiplier tweak somewhere?

<b>6. Bug(Major)Char skills:</b> It appears some of the officer skills dont actualy have an in-game effect when added to the party officer skills points pool.
Most notable example so far is the skills of the Navigator - sailing/defense/most/all(?) sailing related perks(speed up/maneuver/storm helm(?)) dont seem to effect your ships performance. In the origonal game you would feel the better maneuver skill have an effect - you ship would turn much easier. Now its stays at whatever you've set it in buildsettings.h.

there may be other such cases like this(Cannons/Accuracy seems to be ok for the Gunner - not sure on perks though)?

Boatswains boarding perks seem to be broke also? We need to try to document all the possible false effects for all the officer skills+perks.

Playing stormy start out of Cayman.

One of the beaches is locked you can get on but not off.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Do you remember the location name? Locked means you can walk around but the exits do not work? All of them? Do the exits show the locked padlock icon? Or do they teleport you into black screen oblivion?

Any suspicious error or compile log messages?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Is that still a problem? With a few details I could tackle it.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> Played Beta7 mainquest 'till Kheal Roa and all went well
except for one CTD fighting Silehard of Kael Roa. Went ok after
playing Safegame. I installed two fixes which where puplished after,
one by Hook (I think) and changing the line in LAi_Boarding.c
if (isFort) limit =12 to 10. Congradulation everybody!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

You actually managed to play the entire main quest in Beta 7? That is amazing and bodes very well for a final Build 13 release! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Could you tell me which fixes exactly you put in? I want to be sure I don't forget to include them in the next beta. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Not quite sure about Hooks fixes. He didn't post them on FTP nor the bug tracker. Good way to lose track of them.

I have a fix for:
Trade missions to philipsburg.
Stopping multiple anchoring keypresses.

They are in ftp as well as on the bug tracker.

post#13 in this thread is one thing that i dont think got into beta7 - ref crashes in the forts.

Only 4 bugs left.

<b>Whole Fleet goes neutral bug:</b>

I cannot seem to ever get this no matter who surrendered, when, where, with what, to whom. I believe its resolved, but some people claim its still an issue. I'm sick of seeing the issue on the bug tracker <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

<b>Getting stuck in Conceicao bug:</b>

I've never seen it. No one else has confirmed the bug, and the original poster of it has never responded with more helpful information. I don't think it _IS_ a bug, but rather a side effect from one of the very many other bugs during the time period. I say we close the issue out, and let it sleep with the fishes.

<b>CTD in big battles during weather change:</b>

Avoidable if you turn off the toggle of "UPDATE_WEATHER_AT_SEA". However work on still finding the actual culprit of 'why' is still underway. We need people to try old builds up till this problem is introduced. It is easily reproducable.

Open up PROGRAM/console.c, and find "void ExecuteConsole() {". After that, add four lines of code like this:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->void ExecuteConsole() {
    sNewExecuteLayer = SEA_EXECUTE;
    sNewRealizeLayer = SEA_REALIZE;
    Whr_UpdateWeather(false);
    return;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2--> Exactly like that (the "return;" line is important).

Now go play the game, find a BIG battle (ship encounters on worldmap near an island do well for overloading the game), then after a few minutes in the battle, hit your console key -F12- to activate the weather update function. When it BOMBS... you know it. However if it doesnt bomb, keep trying. Wait more minutes, try again... or go find an even bigger battle. Its easier to find huge battles with Journman, or Swashbuckler difficulty.

<b>CTD hitting F1 or F2 while in the middle of a big sea battle:</b>

This bug is avoidable by simply not hitting F1 or F2 to go to any menus during a sea battle. However, we need to find when this bug was introduced as well, so we can try to pinpoint what changes in the build may have caused this. Right now, its a bomb happening on a "SendMessage" action inside every interface file. However, since that action existed in stock code... it can't really be that, but rather something else in the mix that is going bad (like a post event, or update event, etc). Either way, it dies on "SendMessage" in the interface init function when you hit F1 or F2.

Easy enough to test and find. Get yourself into a massive sea battle, then periodically hit F2 a few minutes at a time. Some battles, like 16+ ships when some ships are HUGE... you will get an instant CTD the first time you hit F2 like a minute into the battle.

Welp. Thats it for the known problem list. The two major CTD's are avoidable if you take precautions to avoid doing what causes them. However, we would rather fix the bug, than hide it.

Well i'm wondering if this is as you've told me in some other posts: 1 ship will surrender than others in the convoy just go into 'flee' mode - they dont technicaly surrender(their flags wont go white) but stop fighting.

If this IS that bug then its only half a bug really <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
It does happen too often maybe? it would be nice to see the other ships keep up the fight for a bit longer?

oh and by the way awesome effort in cleaning up bugs guys <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> last time i checked the bug tracker(a few days back) we had an even mix of pink/blue and green - now just 4 pink issues and a sea of green! amazing!

maybe i should keep my mouth shut here, because i never encountered the bugs and dont know jack about the code....

but i got an idea... maybe its helpful... so, you say, its necessary to get a BIG Battle to get a crash when the weather changes. right?

weather changes include sudden changes of wind direction, right?
the ai reacts on wind direction, i suppose.
plus, they react on each other, ie have some sort of teamplay, right?

so to put it in true non-coders words: maybe all this decisions the ai has to make in one short moment... are just too much?

now i feel stupid... but somehow i just had to mention it.

Hate to add in a new bug at this late stage, but just came accross this:

1. I was off capturing a pirate (I <i>think</i> it was a governer assigned mission one) and I found that the ship I ended up capturing had no guns installed (I just kept grapeshotting it untill they surrended).

2. After capturing the ship, I found that every time I tried to go to deck view, I got a CTD. After getting guns installed at the shipyard, the crashing stopped.

Well, all good assumptions, but, those things don't happen. The AI is stupid, it never sails 'smartly' based on wind direction (ever see a ship tack? nope). Likewise, teamplay? Naw... they all just get set to "Attack" or "Defend" or "Flee" or "Drift" ... no teamplay AI in the code, like, 'you go this way, ill go that way'... hell, Ive seen fleets ram into each other because they are so stupid <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Good thoughts though.

Regarding new issue:

Hmm... no cannons causes CTD. Interesting. Is that "actual" deck view... or do you mean 1st person sailing mode where you are still in the battle, and are looking out of the eyes of the captain, and can zoom in with a spyglass?

Jonathan, i dont suppose you remember what ship type it was?(maybe you still have a save prior to meeting it?) If we know what ship type, it would be something to look out for in the general CTD when in large ship battles issue - it could be the same issue? then simply remove that ship type(or fix it) and CTDs are gone - build13 ready!?

It was a class 6 Pirate design Cutter.
Speed: 17.9
Manuverability: 77
max gun class 6
35 crew
8 soldiers
263 cargo space

(No idea if you need all that other details.)

There's a good chance that the CTD bug would hit any ship with no installed guns, though I'm not sure how you'd check this, but it happens as soon as you switch to deck view.

The other bug was the fact that a ship was created with no guns in the first place. Going back to it, I've also noticed that in the "sail to" list it comes up as a class 5, but from the telescope (and after capturing it) it was a class 6.

Here's the save where I'm about to go capture it... if you play it you'll notice it doesn't shoot at you.
