Build 14 Alpha 9

Pieter Boelen

Navigation Officer
Administrator
Storm Modder
Hearts of Oak Donator
Despite some earlier difficulties in getting it made and uploaded, the long-awaited Alpha 9 is finally available. Providing an easy installation on top of Build 13 Final and the most stable gameplay in a Build 14 Alpha version since many years, this version should give people some good new stuff to try out.

Alpha 9 promises to be the most playable Alpha version since Build 14 Alpha 6, now released over two years ago. Having played it myself before uploading, it seems to work pretty well. Many gamekilling bugs have been solved and many new features added.

It's still an Alpha though and there will be bugs. If you encounter any, be sure to let us know. And make sure to save often! If you encounter any random problems or crashes, usually reloading your savegame will get you through properly.

Installation and Gameplay Tips:
- INSTALL BUILD 13 FINAL

Install to, for example, C:\Games\Pirates of the Caribbean instead

- !!!SAVE OFTEN!!!

Pieter, can I install alpha 9 over 8.5 patch 1, or will I need to re install to build 13 then apply the new release?

It is always better to reinstall Build 13 then follow the instruction. If you intended to put it on top of 8.5 patch 1, then install patch 2 then install the Alpha 9 light version.

hoimen... looks like i'll have to get a new rig for this one. shame really, because i'd really like to have a go at this version.

oh boy is it good to be back.
I had been in theological seminary in Israel for like over two years,
I am temporarily back stateside and I just got my old computer working.
It just occurred to me to dig up my POTC discs and after a little bit of head scratching I remembered the URL piratesahoy.net
and now I'm back in the saddle... errr back at the helm...
anyways cant wait to boot this up just gotta restart my computer.
Also when I ran runme.bat
there were a whole lot of files not found :-X
I followed the directions to a "t"
is this gonna be problematic?

I think there is a rey file missing for the BlackPearl again. Can I copy the files from the 8.5 patch 1 version into the blackpearl ship folder?

Do the many fixes include the "invisible enemies spawning in masts upon boarding"-bug?
And I've been burning from desire to ask if the special guy, that can sell you any quest/movie/special ship, is included yet?

I'll download the mod monday, after I'll have formatted my hard drive! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Apparently the files(BlackPearl_rey_a1.gm & BlackPearl_rey_b1.gm) are in the Alpha 9 version but they don't get install, we will have to work on that.

I do recommend making a clean install if you can, though. That ensures you'll end up without any unnecessary files and your installation will be the same as I have on my computer.

You do need to select a storyline, but there always was a storyline. Now there's just more of them. The "Customize Character" screen still doesn't work, but if you want to use a different starting model, there's always the tailors' shops and there's nothing you can't tweak through the code. So you've got options aplenty.
And if you REALLY - DO - NOT - WANT to have any quest available to you when you're playing, pick the "Master & Commander" storyline; that one is 100% free-play and there's no quests <i>at all</i>.

We improved the main performance issue, so all you really need is HD space. Or is that the problem? You can circumvent it by playing from an external HD.

Oh well... looks like we'll be needing a patch. Soon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

And Hendrick Vanderdecken is up and running, selling cursed ships from the Hispaniola Buccaneer Camp.

I used to be able to play the regular game on my computer with very little performance problems.
Every once in awhile it would slow down but nothing that was aggravating.
Now its unbearable. It is tremendously choppy while sailing, the loading screens are taking forever. Sometimes textures dont load at all.
Sometimes when sailing the game freezes completely.
Im running
1.5 ghz intel pentium 4
256 megabyte sdram
and a Geforce 4 graphics card.
I close all programs before running the game.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Is it possible that the build has just becomes so advances that my computer cant handle it anymore?
