Creating a Davvy Jones Model (WIP)

this is garbage! I'm back at school, and I can't seem to import .obj files into maya 2008! This is crippling. this is such garbage because I can export .wrl files, but I can't load them. Before I used to go and just convert them to .obj, but now I can't seem to get that working either.

I found another tool that can convert .wrl files into .ma files that maya can handle. I tried exporting my file to .wrl then using the tool to convert it back to .ma and it worked fine. However, when I tried doing it with the Davy.wrl file that I have, it didn't work. this is so confusing. I know that there is a awesome davy jones model in that file, and that it works - I tried loading it using the program I used to convert the files originally to .obj, and it worked fine. And then I remember back when we were running maya 7 there was no problems, and then I could even just use the .obj extension...

oh darn - appariently I never uploaded any screenshots... sorry about that guys. I'll get on that soon if you would still like. My big conflict now really is ... do I bother refining the model after the other one? Or do I just texture this one, keep going, and then maybe start other projects... I... really feel kinda bad about this -and it makes no sense... I'll see if I can find maya 7 anywhere though... maybe somewhere in the school there is still something...

I'd love to see a screenshot personally, but I'd say it would probably be fine as is, rather than have to model it after the one from disney's game. It would be unfair for anyone to expect those high standards from you when they probably had a team do theirs. If that's what you meant that is... Anyway, yeah especially if 2008 is giving you guff. Your concept art alone was awesome, Can't wait.

ah, good to see you again! in case you where wondering, my music pack is just about finished. the only problem is that it's at the moment only compatible with build 12.1, as that's what i'm playing right now.

Morgan: aa haaa! Morgan! Great to see you again! And yes that's awesome, I can't wait to check that out. Man I have started and not finished so many projects lately it's terrible. congratulations if for nothing else just being able to get something out.

Stian: Alright Stian - you have me sold... but I want to at least try to tweak it a bit... I did realize just how off it was when I was able to get the model into maya 7 and compare the two. But yes, I will reinstall pirates, and pick up a screenshot of the character in it. ASAP. lol and as for concept art - this is one of my stronger points. If people ever need help visualizing stuff, I'll try to get to that as soon as possible.

Davy Jones model what is on the works? and WILL look like a Davy Jones? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> ..NNNIIIIIIIIIIICCCEEE!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bird.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yoho" border="0" alt="bird.gif" />

look earlier in this topic! you'll find screenshots of davy being made.

heretik, the glory isn't that great as i'd wish, as i'm supposed to do a whole lot of other things myself. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> now this isn't that bad, but it's that i CAN do them but are too lazy for it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

alright... soo good news bad news situation.

I was able to find a computer with maya 7.0, but I still couldn't get the .obj to load in the program properly. I do not know what my problem is, as I can load other models that I took from the game in the same format, and I remember being able to do this before... so I'm just not sure what to think. In any case, I guess that means that I will just tweak this one.

could there be something wrong with the file itself? i sure hope not. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Maya <b>5.0</b> can be found on the <a href="http://pafiles.com/potc/" target="_blank">PotC Files FTP</a> along with the required plugin. That should enable you to export to GM. Not sure about importing files though. Great to hear you're still working on it! We do have a Davy Jones head-swap version, but an actual model would be most welcome! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

no offense, but the head-swap one is horrible. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> first i thought it wasn't that bad, but i've begun to like it less by the day.

That's one way to put it. Personally I am happy we at least HAVE something resembling a Davy Jones. At least he's got Davy's face. Thomas the Terror made a reskin of the character, but I have not yet tried it ingame. Looks to be better though.

i haven't seen the one with his face yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> that could look better.

The head swap DOES have Davy's face textured onto it. In any case: See attached for a picture of Thomas the Terror's modified skin.

Looks pretty cool <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

You call that model of Davy Jones what Pieter posted cool? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/8q.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":8q" border="0" alt="8q.gif" /> Oh! for CRYING OUT FREAKIN' LOUD!
for me that picture of Davy Jones (what is in Pieter's last post in this topic) looks like Davy Jones got retired and bought a farm. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerbz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nerbz" border="0" alt="nerbz.gif" />
I don't like that farmers hat on him. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

LOL. It's better than the previous version though, isn't it? Still looking forward to a <i>real</i> version. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

oh my god! Pietr! Are you serious! You actually got a hold of Maya 5.0? And that means that you can use the tools required to export the files? Does that mean that we would be able to import animations?!!!!!!

'cause now I haven't learned rigging yet, but I'm in the process of learning computer animation. I'm sooo grabbing those files right now. while I'm at it I might as well pick up the davy file again to see if I can maybe load it into maya 5.0?

oh - and I think I lost the .gm that I made - so I'm going to take 2 hours now, and just do whatever I can to fix up the model, then go through that trouble later. I just don't want to keep posting without making any kind of progress 'cause then I'm just leading people on.

friends - feast your eyes on this!

The pre-made animations work fine - I just need to resize it a bit so that DAvy-boy isn't quite as big in comparison to the other characters.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/new_age_heretik/Skin%20Previews/DavyPreview.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Other than resizing, and remodelling his hand to something more akin to a real hand (ackward with the sword/pistol or whatever hand it was - I don't actually remember) I just need to solve the problems with the normals, and then get painting! AND it's reading week. so that means that I should actually have some time too!

/edit

I am trying to resize the model - but it just seems to import too large. playing around with tool should help.
