Desperate for help

Captain Ussopp

Landlubber
Firstly, hi to all you pirates of technological genius.

Secondly, HELP!

I bought POTC yesterday and was really looking forward to playing it, I installed it on my brand new laptop, (If you need to know graphics card, specifications etc. please tell me how to get to them) but then, when it has loaded up and is on the start menu, if I click to start a new game, it cuts off to the desktop!

Can someone please help me?

I would be very greatful,

Sincerely, the fearless Captain Ussopp.

What kind of graphics card does your laptop have? Right-click "This computer" on your desktop, then select "properties".

Do you have the right DirectX version installed? Press Start > Run > type "dxdiag" > OK to find out.

Please open up engine.ini in your PotC folder (with Notepad), set "debuginfo" to 1 and start a new game. When the game crashes, please show the contents of system.log, compile.log and error.log here.

I hope any of these things might help to explain why it isn't working.

If you enabled the error logging like I said, the files will be generated in your main PotC folder. Error.log might be missing, but the other files should be there.

I have to be leaving for today though. Maybe somebody else will be able to help you while I am away. Otherwise I will reply as soon as I can again. Good luck with it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I still cannot find those logs, but if it makes any difference I have the Ubisoft version and live in the UK. I have the other 2 things you asked for (I think), and I can e-mail them to you, although you may need to zoom in to see them.

Could it have something to do with my version of DirectX (9.0c)

Okay, MAJOR UPDATE!

I managed to get system.log and compile.log

So will someone PLEASE HELP ME?!?

Captain Ussopp:

Are you playing a modded version or standard POTC? Also what are your specs. Go to My Computer, click on properties, select device manager.

Graphics Card, Mem, processor speed.

What is ubisoft? My game is by Bethesda Softworks?.

In device manager, under display adaptors, it has 2 Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family.

Under Processors, it has 2 Genuine Intel® CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz.

Where is memory located?

As for ubisoft, check pirates.ubi.com

When you click on Properites memory should be on the general page right under the processor. What kind of graphics card are you using?

I did not find any POTC game on the usisoft site.

When you were installing the game did you install Direct X? If not try that.

Also, I don't have any familarity with this but there might be an issue of a US version on a UK system.

It says 980 MHz, 0.99 GB of RAM.

POTC is on the Ubisoft site. You may have to search for Pirates.

I did install DirectX

Could my version of DirectX (9.0c) have anything to do with it?

Also, I believe that the Ubisoft version is the UK version.

Captian:

I pretty much out of my depth here but is 980mHz your porcessor speed?

You might check to see if there is an update for DirectX

no idea whats wrong, but i have the Ubisoft release too. and my system specs are

"Dual" Intel Xeon 2.2Ghz CPU
XFX Nvidia "GeForce 6800GS", Agp 8x, 256mb
1024 Mb Ram
DirectX 9.0c
WindowsXP professional.

My laptop is supposed to be like the best thing for games, and Black and White 2 works perfectly but this doesn't!

One thing I can think of is that my PC's dx diagnostic tool has AGP texture accelleration enabled, but it is not available on my laptop.

Have you run dxdiag yet? Press Start > Run > type "dxdiag" > OK, then say what DirectX version you have installed.

If "Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family" is your graphics card, that might be the problem. It isn't a regular graphics card, but an on-board graphics card. I recall someone else had something similar and the game refused to work as well. That means you would need to add a different graphics card, but I don't know if that's possible with laptops... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
