Devil's throat

To enter or exit from Devil's throat bay at Redmond you have to sail between some reefs, with a ship small enough. But even with a tartan boat I'm hurting an invisible barrier in all case. It would be really silly that this place could't be accessible without using the direct sail option. I'd like to look at the patch file - but I cannot understand what the game is using for that. At least I'd like to see the Redmond.tga.zap, in the foam/islands folder but I don't know wich program I should use to convert this back to tga - could someone help?
 
I think I've got a trick for converting Redmond.tga.zap to .tga. Actually REMOVE redmond.ini and Redmond.tga.zap, then go to Redmond in the game. The loading will now take VERY long, because the game will actually generate a new foam file itself. Through generating this file, the .tga is generated as well. I know this works for land locations, although I am not sure if it also works for islands. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
 
I've just checked - and wow! It sure worked! Not only did a new .ini, .tga.zap, and .tga files were created but the entire problem was solved - that's fantastic!
Thanks Pieter Boelen - now couldn't that fix be added in a Build version? You'd just remove thoses two files with the runme.bat. And it could be good to prevent the player to use fast travel if he's sailing a ship that is too big.

I just sailed through a gap between those rocks with the Endeavour, which is one of the largest ships in the game.
 
i warn you against disabling fast travel when the ship's too big. there's no way you can get to devil's throat apart from the town, and i don't think you can go through the town when you have to land at devil's throat for the main quest. by that time, you will most certainly have a ship that's too big, so it would be impossible to continue. if you can go through the town for the main quest, that's actually just wierd. you're supposed to land at the beach.

Actually I think the problem was that the file had been written so that the patch doesn't exactly fit the real island, to prevent the player from getting here. Maybe they wanted that only Danielle could bring you here by enabling/disabling the direct sail option?... Or maybe they just wanted the reef barrier to look nicer with pretty foam all around the reefs? (most of it disapeared with the version the game automaticly generate)

Do you remember the ability that allows you to sail through reefs and the like without taking so much damage? I always did wonder if there ARE any of those reefs in the game at all. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
 
yes, there are. there's one at the beach at isla muelle (i think) and at the same area at hispaniola, the east sandy tip, which i found out the bad way. i've never tried to sail through the reefs at FDF, as they lead to nowhere, but i think those might count as well. you may very well be right that the ability is used for devil's throat.
 
You know what? I just tried out and you were right again. I put back the old foam files, added this perk to my main character, and sailed through the reefs. You indeed gets hurt but you can go through all the dangerous water. In fact even without this perk you still can pass, in a very narrow place but your ship gets extremly damaged.
Maybe we should remove fast travelling to Devil's throat if you haven't got this perk... That could make this ability more interesting : it would allow you to get to new places with it.

The problem is that if you don't have that ability and get stuck you don't understand why. Except from the foam on the waves, there's nothing you can see - no reefs or sandbank. That sure could have been made better.
Pieter, how did you managed to sail here with the Endeavour?... Even the largest gap looks very narrow to me.

It's really easy with the newly generated foam file.
 
that's a pretty big hole. you'd think you'd notice such things earlier, meaning myself as well.
 
I just tried: With the original foam file you can't sail through there, with the newly generated one you can. Also worthy of note: I just sailed the Endeavour through the shoals using the old foam file. I think I found the right path through the foam labyrinth. So I have now proven that even with the old foam file, you CAN sail big ships through there. You need a high sailing skill though, otherwise you can't manouvre quickly enough.
 
it's always nice to be able to explore something new once in a while. exploring all those reefs with a cutter or something smaller is also great fun. at port-au-prince it's almost nessesary, as a lot of battles take place there.
 
I just tried and I managed to sail through the reefs at Devil's Throat with the Lugger1 at the lowest character level with the lowest skills and without having the ability and I still didn't get any damage at all. This is with the OLD foam file. It's really easy as long as you know the correct safe path through the rocks.
 
i think the beach should be excluded from the fast travel menu. however, this could be annoying to a lot of players. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
 
Why? You can sail there using any ship. I managed it with both the Interceptor (at high character level and good manouvrability) and the Lugger1 (at lowest character level).
