Early sea battles

Having just started the game Ive noticed I can't seem to sink anything with the ship Ive got. Is it possible to win a battle at the beginning or can I only succeed once Ive upgraded to a better ship?

what ship do you have? it's not worthwile with a gunboat, not to mention if it's doable or not, but it should be possible with the other ships. although i do have my doubts about the lugger. i'd just try to board. avoid contact though. sinking is a lot easier than you think with some of those flimsy things.

that's not exactly specific. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Its really does'nt have a name. Its a number 6 ship, if thats any use.
All this have come about because of one of the early missions. I've been told to ecort a French supply ship but Im to take it out of action some way or another. Everytime I try and blow it out of the water I get hammered. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

well, one tip to take on that french barque is to sail to redmond via the worldmap, go to seaview at the fort, and let the fort destroy the ship!

if you could give me a more detailed description of the ship, i will be able to tell you what it is. masts, cannons, rigging, things like that.

one strategy to try is to do hit-and-runs using chainshot. dart in, fire the chain, then sail out before the let loose. you need to get a larger ship. i used chain on larger ships to get what i now have- a light man-o-war, a ship-of-the-line, and a full size man-o-war. fire on them until thier mast fall, board, kill the crew and sail the ship into port and get it fixed at the shipyard. sell your lower numbered ship to pay for the repairs. for boarding you need to have good swordsmanship and defense abilities. i sail the light MOW and use the other 2 ships as cargo and supply holders. as you get bigger ships, upgrade your cannons. how do you pay for all this? attacking pirate ships and selling the booty in port!
hope it helps,
iball

i think he's a bit too inexperienced for that. but my method works really well for that part of the quest.

what i would do with other ships is just keep fireing round shot at them until they surrender. it usually does the job on the sails and crew nicely as well. if you get a bit more experienced, you could try using more ammo types.

Im kinda stuck coz I can't go any where without the french supply ship. Ive tried heading to Redman Island but as soon as I moor thereI get attacked by it and dont have the option to sail to the fort

you should be able to outrun the barque. but what i said was that you should land at the fort, not anywhere else on redmond.

Well I succeeded in destroying it, not in the fashion I would have liked but its at the bottom of the caribbean sea where its supposed to be! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

you could of course just sailed close to an island and wiat until it ran itself aground. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

That did actually ocur to me but the AI seemed a little too clever for that. The ship just stuck to me like glue but always seemed to move out of the way of impending doom. Maybe I was too impatient! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

you'll learn. skill takes time. i would suggest aiming to board a sloop-class ship with your current ship. i think it's a lugger, right? three masts, fore-to-aft rigged, 4 cannons on port and starboard, 2 on stern and bow? use the agility and speed you have, and avoid damage as much as possible. it can't take that much. sloops are ship's such as the ketch, sloop, and bermuda sloop. cutter's count as well, but those are actually weaker than the lugger. then you should go for a schooner-typed ship. from there, you could try to give a shot at the pirate corvette you can aquire with a quest from the falaise de fleur governor.

Ah. I tried boarding as well but was well out numbered even with a maxed crew. Died very quickly. :s

updated previous post.

try boosting your crew's morale, and practice in the dungeons. get toughness as soon as you can. the hotkey for a potion is C.

You mean when sword fighting? Yes I do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
