No, Im playing the game straight from the box.

that would explain a lot. in the modpack, you can select your character and ship from the start. you can select:

will turner
nathaniel hawk
governor's daughter
high seas lass
cap'n hook (or henry morgan, which i use him for)
jack sparrow
norrington (from DMC)
jack aubrey
and maybe more, there might be some differences as well.

the ship's you can select are:

bermuda sloop
sloop
ketch
lugger
lugger VML
gunboat
barque
yacht
and maybe another

OK, as has been suggested, start by practicing your fencing in the dungeons. There's one under Oxbay town (entrance just across from the shipyard, or dive off the pier and swim round to a cave). Another is in Redmond (entrance through an arched doorway near the church). There's a cave between Greenford and Oxbay. And there's a dungeon in Douwesen. You'll have to fight lots of skeletons and you'll have to learn how to fight two or more opponents at the same time, and if you survive long enough to find it, each of these dungeons contains a nice sword.

How to fight multiple opponents: keep your block up, wait for them all to strike at once, then hit back at one of them. If he's just hit you then he's not blocking, and if all of them have just hit you then there's a brief moment while they recover before they can hit again. Start the fight by shooting the enemy before you close to fight with swords - unless you have bought a bigger gun, you probably won't kill him but you will weaken him.

The initial deck fight should be you plus three crewmen against four enemies, unless you're <i>really</i> badly outnumbered. So you should start the fight facing only one enemy personally. When you've finished him, go to help your crew - the more of you survive the first deck, the more of you there will be if the fight continues to another deck.

And look for small enemies to board and capture before you get to the escort mission. By the time I'm "escorting" the barque, I'm in at least a xebec, possibly a schooner.

Thanks alot for the advice. I'll try it out next time I play. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

then here's another piece of advice: use the mods if you can! seriously, it ads incredibly much to the game. i had a good laugh recently when i was in tortuga. i knew it would happen, but it was funny nonetheless. i was simply walking the streets (fights going on everywhere around me as usual <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ) when i priest ran past me being chased by a skeleton! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> it was like: GIVE ME MY FUNERAL! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />

lol Nice story. I will play around with the mods but I first want to play through the game as it was intended.

You play the game without the mods? That does explain a lot. I think you'll find (hardly) anybody here who plays the game without the mods. The modpacks add so much more fun to the game that we don't want to play without it anymore. The mods are free for download and I can highly recommend you get them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

To Morgan Terror: You're using PB Modifications then. The skeleton chasing the priest is only in there and not in Alpha 6, if I remember correctly. Have you tried to talk to some of the girls at Tortuga Port yet? There's a funny surprise there. And there's Mr. Gibbs in the tavern, who can give you the compass that points to Isla de Muerte and who can join your crew as boatswain if you like. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

well, i haven't tried the girls yet, but i did hire mister gibbs and went to isla the muerta straight away after that. tortuga was the town where i chose to start, and i immediatly noticed the huge size of the AOP port. it's nice to explore something new again. problem is though, the port is so big that it causes massive lag on my computer. but i'm used to that.

isla de muerta was great fun. although it was deserted and there was mothing to find except for a worn grapeshot pistol, the atmosphere was great! apart from the music, there was a thick fog to add to the spooky atmosphere of the island. i loved to big AOP cave. i couldn't believe how big it was at first, and the cave didn't have lag at all. i guess i get so much lag at tortuga because there are so many people walking around, although the quantity for that size of area is right. (although it really is to much in other locations)

Just talk to a bunch of them and be amused. Don't leave the port after the first girl encounter and drink a potion if you need to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

i got slapped about 15 times yesterday. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> they didn't do any damage though. it was kinda funny to see mister gibbs being chased by one of those women. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> probably just a coincidence, but it was still funny.

LOL. Sometimes they actually DO damage if they hit you properly. I didn't actually INTEND that, but it was automatically added by the game somehow. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

one would start to wonder why there are so many of them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Because there are generated all over again ever time you enter the port. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
