For all quest makers; Curse of the Black Pearl (re)quest

Thomas the Terror

Mad Pirate
Storm Modder
Pirate Legend
Allright this is my idea. Since much modders don't have much time and quest coding is very timeconsuming, I came with a solution for a big CotBP quest. We tear it apart! We make the quest in pieces. This is my view:

Quest part 1: You are in Redmond, and you are going to steal the Interceptor. You get caught, but escape to the blacksmith. Here you fight Will Turner (you take half his health, he has much hp) and you get arrested after this. You get a little conversation with the pirates attacking the town. You escape the prison and you get the Interceptor as ship and Will as officer. END PART 1, you are Free to do what you want.

Quest part 2: You go to Tortuga, and quest part 2 starts. You run into Gibbs, and you assemble a crew. You get Gibbs as officer. END PART 2, free to do what you want.

Quest part 3, final part: You sail to Isla de Muerta, have a little fight, are captured and after the Interceptor is boarded (could be left out) you get moored on the little Island. Marines save you, and you get teleported to Isla de Muerta at night, you battle Barbossa (take a coin, your health go up, because Barbossa is hard to beat). You are transported to Redmond, and are going to be hung. You now fight marines with Will at your side. Lose Will as officer and gain the Black Pearl.

END CotBP quest.

What do you guys think. My plan was to do the same with the DMC and AWE quest, so you can make big quests, in tiny parts.

I think this is a pretty good idea. I am wondering how close we should stay to the films' plots. Of course game engine limitations make sure we cannot stick too faithfully to the film's story. Also the game should not become a liniair adventure game. Even when the film events kick in, the player should still be given the freedom to do whatever he likes and go pirating at random between the movie scenes. Basically the player should be able to choose when to continue with the film's story. This idea allows for that. It would also be relatively easy to code in, because the quest is built up out of several small film scenes interspersed with long times where the player is still free to do whatever he wants. Also in theory this way multiple coders could work on several different parts at once. Provided that we'd have multiple coders willing to work on it, that is.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I am willing to take on part 1 - if you are interested - as it continues on from the Barbossa mutiny in the Jack Sparrow story.

Cool. Thank you Jack. The locations we have to use are ingame (but we miss the Port Royal Land fort, I think we should make one with a fort in it.

I was wondering if it would be at all possible to make some nice AWE scenes. Imagine Antigua island textured white for the sailing through the arctic. You then have to sail through the narrows of the island and when you get through, you can press F3 to go to land, which is Davy Jones' Locker. The loading screen then shows the waterfall scene. Davy Jones' Locker itself would then be a jungle location without palm trees and textured like a desert with the Black Pearl added on top. Might be fun. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

It would be great if Short Jack Gold and Bartolomeu o Portugues could try to work on the CotBP quest. I was also wondering if we could add a ship locator close to the jetty of Redmond where we can put the Interceptor. Then we can add Murtogg and Mulroy guarding the Interceptor. I think that'd be brilliant and should, in theory, be possible. Then you can go and capture the Dauntless and then you get a ship-to-ship battle between the Dauntless and the Interceptor where you can board the Interceptor and swap ships. It would be a funny idea to make the Dauntless handle really slow and sluggish for this. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I may be misunderstanding you here, but my initial thoughts were:
Have the story start after Jack has got off the marooned island - sails to Oxbay - docks - girl (sorry don't remember her name right now - the one getting married) is floating in the water by the dock (a locator exists for this) - goes (swims) to our Jack, who has jumped in to save her, and starts conversation. Murtogg and Mulroy are on guard at the dock also. Norington and company come down and do the business on Jack who then does the "swap ship" thing to get the interceptor, and as they say "gets the hell out of there".

There is no access to the water at Redmond dock I believe, so to me this would start closer to the story (film) line.

For the rescuing of the girl and Will in the pirate cave with the coin issue - what about the cave on Isla de Muerte with those lovely gold chests in there?

Just a suggestion <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I am thinking we should use some cutscenes from the films to show certain events we can't replicate in the game itself. So we could have the conversation between Jack and Murtogg and Mulroy, then a film of Elizabeth Swann falling into the water and Jack rescuing her plays. Next thing we see is Jack next to Elizabeth, who lies on the ground and Norrington and governor Swann approaching.

We could make some action scenes out of certain scenes in the film. For example: There could be an action scene where Jack escapes from Norrington and goes to Will's blacksmith. Then there should be a somewhat challenging duel with Will. We would need a larger blacksmith location for this, possibly based on the Oxbay shipyard. Then there can be a ship-to-ship battle between the Dauntless and the Interceptor during which you can board the Interceptor, fight the navy men aboard the ship, then swap ships. You can also choose to keep the Dauntless that way, but this is not recommended because you don't have the crew for the ship. I think the Dauntless should handle really sluggish because you crew a Battleship with only two men. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

i'm totally for this idea. and if i'd have the space on my harddrive and a fast enough internet connection, i'd most certainly supply the cutscenes. but of course, i don't have these things. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

wouldn't it be really difficult to escape with the interceptor? i'm having more than enough trouble to escape oxbay already! escaping with the interceptor might be even worse odds. although you might be able to stay out of it's fireing arcs because of low manuevrability. one thing though: the player's ship. i'd presume it's in the hands of barbossa, right? can it be made sure that if the player didn't have the black pearl for whatever reason, he get's the correct ship back?

Might be possible, yes. As for the Dauntless/Interceptor battle, I imagine it like this: The player puts to sea and has the Dauntless as ship with one officer (Will Turner) and two crewmembers. The Interceptor is there as enemy and comes sailing up to the player and boards the Dauntless. Will and Jack then fight off the British navy soldiers and get to the ransack screen where you can swap ships. The Redmond fort should be friendly to the player at that moment, otherwise it becomes much too hard. But it should be pretty playable: The Dauntless is slow and sluggish, but has lots of hit points. The Interceptor is fast and agile and comes to board the Dauntless. The boarding should be two characters on the player side vs only a couple of navy soldiers. Not huge amounts. After all: The royal navy could only supply the Interceptor with a couple of soldiers on such short notice as required to take the Dauntless back. And they'd only need a couple of soldiers, because there's only two people aboard the Dauntless.

how about the minimum crew for the interceptor plus a certain small amount? that should give her the manuevrability she needs. something that i can imagine to happen would be this: the player wins the boarding fight. most of the enemy crew is killed as a result. the player transfers the crew to his ship after swapping ships, and leaves the dauntless with hardly any crew. this seems a bit illogical to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> i'm not sure wether the minimum crew should be left on the ship you hand over to the enemy though. if this is the case, then the crew amounts should be just about right. there is but one major problem: if you swap ships after winning, the dauntless will sink unless she surrenders first!

Good point about the Dauntless sinking. As for the amount of crew after capturing the Interceptor: I see no problem. Jack did sail the ship into Tortuga with only Will to help him. So the challenge for the player will then be: Reach a friendly port to hire a new crew. Which is exactly what Jack needed to do in the film as well. Sounds good to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

that's settled then. anyway, maybe there should be a low crew morale for the duantless to make sure she surrenders?

Ok, for Part 1. If I understand SJG will make Part 1. Now, if you want I make part 2 and 3, I need to know quickly a detailed scenario for these parts. From December, I'll have no time to work on the quests.

SJG, I think you should do the quests in Redmond (this is Port Royal) and it HAS the correct docks, I don't think you really need to get in the water to rescue elizabeth.

Bartolomeu:

Part 2: You arrive at Tortuga with Will by your side. You start a conversation with him about looking for crew. You go search for Gibbs and you find him in some alley (sitting like henry the beggar in redmond) after talking to him, you will be teleported to the tavern and you will have a dialog with Gibbs. Then you have more crewman and you set sail to Isla Muerta. You make port there, and you need to go to the maincavern there. You will see Barbossa with elizabeth talking to some pirates about lifting the curse (ritual scene in the movie). You will have an argument with Will, and you will get knocked out, and you wake up in the cave in dialog with Barbossa. You are captured and put in the brig on the black pearl, you escape the brig. Then you get the boarding scene with Interceptor-Black Pearl, and you need to fight off the pirates attacking the Interceptor. You are captured again and put on a little island together with elizabeth. (I suggest an island with 2 little shores and 1 jungle). You need to go from one shore to the other, and there you will be picked up by some marines. Now you are aboard the Dauntless. End Part 2 (you are somesort of captain of the Dauntless now). (You lose the Interceptor, but you can keep it if you dock it somewhere, before going to Isla de Muerta)

Part 3: You have arrived with the Dauntless at Isla de Muerta, you will need to fight your way to the maincavern. You come here and you will have a monolog of Barbossa to his crew (could be done with the scene from the movie, if someone is willing to cut this out and make it a little vid) Then you will get the legendary fight between you barbossa, and Will and Lizzi against some pirates. Before the fight, you get yourself a cursed coin, so your healt will go up (much) because Barbosa has very high hp. When you have defeated him, you have a little dialog with Will and Lizzy about returning to Port Royal. You will be teleported again and you will be in the fort of Port Royal in front of a crowd and some Marines (maybe another scene of the hanging scene of the first movie, I think that will be best) now you have to fight your way out of this fort scene together with Will. If this is completed you are transported abord of the Pearl. Lost: Will, Gained Black Pearl.

Savy?

Very well then. Here comes my attempt. It seems Thomas the Terror already posted ideas for parts 2 and 3, so I have based my parts 2 and 3 on Thomas' ideas.

<i><b>Changes to current main quest:</b></i>
All references to the Black Pearl must be replaced with Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman. Reason is simple: There is no Black Pearl yet. Also we have Bartolomeu's First Contact quest where the player first meets Davy Jones. This can be added into the main quest and must then be completed before the story can progress. Perhaps add some more Norrington encounters every now then. I liked Short Jack Gold's idea of having Norrington form a resistance when Oxbay is occupied by the French.

I am currently rewriting the First Contact quest, rewriting dialogs and slightly extending it. I am not sure yet how it will play into the deal with Davy Jones later on in the story. Any thoughts?

<i><b>End of current main quest:</b></i>
After the whole Greenford thing, player goes to Tortuga to hire a crew and search for Isla de Muerte. Player is mutinied upon by Barbossa and is left to rot on Khael Roa, an island infested with angry natives. Here the player finds the weird item in the temple (What will be its purpose? Useful against the Flying Dutchman much later in the quests, perhaps?). There are cursed natives in the temple, not skeleton pirates. When the player reaches the shore, he meets the rum runners who use the island as a cache and they bring the player back to Tortuga. Here Jack can "borrow" the "Jolly Mon" from Annamaria, which is a tiny little Tartane. With a boat of his own again, the player is now left to do whatever he pleases.

<i><b>Capture of the Interceptor</b></i>
When the player goes to Redmond (=Port Royal), a cutscene will play showing Jack's entrance from CotBP. When the player gets ashore, his ship has sunk and he needs to find a new one. Player sees the Interceptor moored alongside a jetty, guarded by Murtogg and Mulroy. After the dialog, a cutscene plays showing Elizabeth falling into the water and Jack rescuing her. Next scene: Elizabeth on the ground and Norrington and governor Swann show up. After the dialog, the player has to fight his way into town to Will's blacksmith. Here player fights Will, loses and is put in jail. Black Pearl attack cutscene plays. Will comes to rescue Jack. Together they go to the port and capture the Dauntless. The Interceptor sails up to the Dauntless and a boarding begins. Player wins and can swap ships. Player free to continue to do whatever he wants.

<i><b>First Visit to Isla de Muerte:</b> - Based on Thomas the Terror's previous post.</i>
You arrive at Tortuga with Will by your side. You start a conversation with him about looking for crew. You go search for Gibbs and you find him in some alley (sitting like henry the beggar in redmond) after talking to him, you will be teleported to the tavern and you will have a dialog with Gibbs. When you have hired more crewmen, you set sail to Isla Muerta. You make port there, and you need to go to the maincavern there. You will see Barbossa with elizabeth talking to some pirates about lifting the curse (ritual scene in the movie). You will have an argument with Will, and you will get knocked out, and you wake up in the cave in dialog with Barbossa. You are captured and you end up on a leaking ship's deck. You go outside to find a boarding going on between the Black Pearl and the Interceptor. You join the fight. Barbossa cannot be killed. When you killed all skeleton pirates, Barbossa will start a talk with the player. You are captured again and put on a little island together with Elizabeth. (I suggest an island with 2 little shores and 1 jungle). You need to go from one shore to the other, and there you will be picked up by some marines. You get the Dauntless as ship now.

<i><b>Second Visit to Isla de Muerte:</b> - Based on Thomas the Terror's previous post.</i>
You arrive with the Dauntless at Isla de Muerta and you will need to fight your way to the main cavern. You come here and you will have a monologue of Barbossa to his crew (could be done with the scene from the movie, if someone is willing to cut this out and make it a little vid) Then you will get the legendary fight between you barbossa, and Will and Liz against some pirates. I wonder if it would be possible to switch character models every minute or so to show the normal/skeleton transformation. If not, we should at least have Jack and the enemies show as skeletons. (WE NEED A SKELETON BARBOSSA!) Player, Barbossa and skeleton pirates are immortal. The goal is to keep Will alive until Elizabeth arrives. When Elizabeth arrives, the pirates become mortal and can be killed. When all pirates are dead and only Barbossa is left, player can kill Barbossa as well.Y ou have a little dialog with Will and Liz about returning to Port Royal. You will be teleported again and you will be in the fort of Port Royal in front of a crowd and some Marines (maybe another scene of the hanging scene of the first movie, I think that will be best) now you have to fight your way out of this fort scene together with Will. End CotBP dialog starts and the player is free to go. Walk up to the side of the fort where is a locator to sea. When you put to sea, you have the Pearl back.

Ok, Let me read the story you made Pieter and TTT. I just need to think a bit <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />. Tomorrow, if I have no doubt I will start the quest. About the Elizabeth Shaw's disappearance, of course, Pieter you can make the changes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Also I think we should place the Gold Train quest either between CotBP and DMC or between DMC and AWE. My First Contact rewrites seem to be going pretty well. I think I can safely say that I am the first person to ever manage to stage a quest scene on the <i>open ocean</i>. Might be useful for the Will and Jack scene after capturing the Interceptor as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

if the player has the tartane and works back up to a frigate or even higher, wouldn't it be really frustrating if it would just sink? you'd think the player would look better after his ship for that to happen. maybe he should be shipwrecked like in the storm in the old main quest, but without getting his ship back so he's forced to use the interceptor? it would be a bit more acceptable to the player than just having his well-maintained ship sink. don't get me wrong though: i'd prefer having the main quest as similar to the movie as possible, but this is something i'd rather have changed.

I think the player should be forced to use the Interceptor at this point in the quest. So perhaps we could come up with a reason why the player would have the "Jolly Mon" tartane at this point. Also: What WAS Jack doing between the time of the mutiny and his arrival in Port Royal? Pirating at random, I suppose. If the player goes to Tortuga straight after the marooning and gets the Tartane straight away and then goes to Redmond straight away, everything would work fine. But we would then skip a whole ten years of Jack's story in which he probably had a bigger ship. So probably something different would have to happen inbetween. Perhaps Jack and Annamaria make a deal to go pirating together when Jack arrives at Tortuga. Annamaria already has a bigger boat, so the player gets that ship rather than the "Jolly Mon". However, then the player could start the CotBP quest by breaking up with Annamaria and stealing the "Jolly Mon". Why would Jack do that though?

O.K. I've started.
Going to change character who helps Jack off the marooned beach to William "Bootstrap" Turner as that fits in better with the fact of him objecting to Barbossa's mutiny.
I think this keeps it closer to the story line.

Should I add it to 14.6 - 14.7 or 14.7plus ?
