How do you keep officers alive?

FranzG

Landlubber
After a successful boarding, I've hired a merry french doctor for my ship... The problem is that the nice guy follows me everywhere, even if I politely ask him to stay on board at the next battle; so he dies, everytime, everywhere; is there a way to force him to stay on the ship, or at least at the beach, without following me in the dangerous forest?

And another question, the "days out" counter in the high-sea map has a meaning? Or it's only purpose is to track time for the saylor's salary?

That is definitely not correct. Hired officers are supposed to leave your company, or sit out boardings if you tell them to.
What you describe is a bug. Others here may have the answer for this, if it is a known bug.

It tracts time, yes,
It is good to know how many days pass if you are on a timed quest, like delivering goods to a merchant.
It also helps keep tract of your crew's morale and how much longer you can remain at sea before you need to resupply on food stuffs.

As for the officer: If you tell him to sit out boardings, he is not supposed to join you on boardings anymore, but it should not prevent him from following you on land. So does he only follow you on land or on boardings as well? Also: You can remove him as active officer in the passengers menu to prevent him from following you.

About the "days out" counter: It becomes especially relevant when you are on "divide the plunder" mode with your crew. If you sail a long time without dividing the plunder, your crew becomes grumpy. So it then pays to keep an eye on the "days out" counter to decide when it's time to devide the plunder.

Thank you, I've solved the problem putting him in the passenger list when I have to land.
How the officer's skill are used during navigation? Are they added to yours (so if you have 2 luck, and an officer 1, it becomes 3), or the game uses the higher value (so if you have 1, and an officer 2, it becomes 2)?

About the days out: is there a way to reset the counter (for example, when I divide the plunder with the crew), or I have to keep track manually of the passing days?

if you click on your own icon in the passengers list while you have officers with you, you can see your current skills with the influence from your 'equipped' officers added. if an officer has more skillpoints in a skill, that value replaces your own, but only if you have him with you. also, it doesn't always work. an officer with high sailing skill only influences turnrate. YOUR sailing skill influences turnrate and the speed of configuring sails. only your personal luck counts in gambling, and maybe in other cases too. i'd put plenty in luck if i where you, especially when you plan on making your career as a smuggler.

I'm not at all sure on how the skill usage works currently in the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
As far as I remember, the counter is automatically reset ever time you devide the plunder. Not on salary mode though. But I might be wrong here. I only sailed on divide the plunder once.

I'll continue posting my questions here, i'm so noob <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
- How the "surrendering ship"-mod works? I've seen ships struck their colors for no apparent reason, without a single cannon ball fired at'em.
- How can I join a Navy? Is that a part of the main quest, or I have to talk with someone?
- Is there a way to alt-tab the game without make it crash?
Thanks in advance

well, they probably surrendered because there where ships or a fort around them that was hostile to them. if they're in battle for a long time, morale drops, and they surrender. it also drops if they get hit. if the surrendered ship is an enemy of yours, you should be able to board it without a fight.

talk to the governor of a nation of which your standing is -30 or better. you'll get the option of buying a letter of marque to work for the nation. after sinking some of their enemies, go back to the governor for promotion.

As for Alt-Tab: Open engine.ini with Notepad and set full_screen = 0. Then you can Alt+Tab. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Do that <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> , and also set the game's "screen resolution" to the same as your "Desktop resolution".

Thanks.
I've received a quest from the gov "kill a pirate", but I don't know how to find him: where I have to search?

He'll have a ship sailing around the island. Sink or capture that ship, then return to the governor.

Thanks again.
Is there a way to slow down the game in the high-sea map? When I enter battle I often find myself already in cannon range because I wasn't fast enough to press the space-bar at the right time, and that's a bit unrealistic (and a bit too easy if you sail on an first rate ship)

Agh! Can't find it anymore. I know there is a setting in, I think, PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h that defines the distance you find yourself from enemy ships when going into a worldmap encounter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
There is <i>#define MAPSPEED</i> at the top of PROGRAM\WorldMap\worldmap.c that defines how quickly time passes on the worldmap. Default is 0.6. However, it is said that this sometimes causes crashes and that it is better to set this to 1.0, which is the original stock game map speed (quicker than the Build default).

I've searched in InternalSettings.h but I couldn't find the right parameter; I'm trying to set the game to be the more realistic as possible, so if you have other advices... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Have a look through BuildSettings.h and InternalSettings.h and see if there's some stuff in there that you would like to change. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->#define WDMAP_SHIP_SHOW_MODE    3
    // Determines what ships are shown on the worldmap and how
    // 0: Stock PotC, all ships shown with national sail colours
    // 1: All ships visible, but nationality for all but pirate hidden
    // 2: No nations shown
    // 3: No ships at all shown<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

what happens with the third option? I've tried it, but I cannot understand if the ship are still there (just not visible), or there are no ship at all...
If they are there, how can I fight against them? I really like the idea of not being a god that sees everything, but it's a bit boring to sail alone without foes (and for a strange reason, spain and holland are now neutral towards me, so I've to make them change idea with a few cannonball =P)

If I remember correctly, option 3 will make all ships invisible. You can still encounter them, but you can't see them, so you can't chase them. Another major recommendation: Install the <a href="http://pafiles.com/potc/ccc%20experimentals/Directsail_jan25.zip" target="_blank">DirectSail</a> mod! You can then sail from island to island in 3D sailing mode without using the worldmap at all. You will encounter random events along the way. You can still use the worldmap whenever you want. This mod can safely be installed on top of Build 13. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

The DirectSail mod is REALLY interesting, but I have a doubt: if I sail from island to island in 3d mode, how can I save (I don't know why, but you can save everywhere except when you are on your ship)?

You cannot save in 3D sailing mode, not even on your ship. Only on the worldmap or ashore. Nothing we can do about that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
