Improved Ship of Line 74 guns

No, why? Stock PotC ships were made using Maya 4.5, and the lastest version of Maya is 8, I believe. So, don't diss tools just because they aren't the newest ones <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You should be just fine with Max5. And with older version, you might just be able to export ships directly into the TOOL, unlike me - TOOL cannot properly read new fancy schmancy VRML exporter from 3DSMax 8, forcing me to use yet another program to import and then export my ship again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

yeah my worry was it might not be old enough to use the various tools that people had made to make files easily importable/exportable?
I had the impression MAX 4 was the one?(i'll check Pieters site again to be sure)
Anyway as you say, i'm totaly over the moon i found this bargin - so i wont complain.

I made a box today and spun it around a bit - lol <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
Imagine(for the amiga) was the last 3D modeling software i used - Max kinda looks like trying to fly the space shuttle in comparison! lots and lots of buttons, menus - its quite scary in a good way <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Does someone know of there a trial or demo version of Maya or another good modelling program is, i would love to know how to put a steeringwheel and a bell and other fancing things on a POTC ship.

It is Maya 4.5 that you need. For all I know, any 3DS MAX version should work, as long as it can handle VRML files properly.

To Thomas the Terror: You should be able to find free testversions of 3DS MAX that you can use for a couple of days, so you can try to put some bells and whistles on the ships with that. You need to use Inez's tool to convert the GM file to VRML, which can be read by 3DS MAX.

Like I said, Max8 (and presumably 9 as well, unless they rewrote VRML exporter) export vrmls leave TOOL rather baffled, so, I don't think that this is a good idea (assuming, of course, that trial actually allows to save and export anything).

Thanks - that was my confusion. I can use my Max5 with the TOOL conversion program <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I tried once today and failed for some reason, but its good knowing when i get time to get around to it i have the tools. thanks for your help <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You guys have sparked my curiosity, so I decided to try this.

I used the Tool to change a gm ship file to vrml and saved it.
Without doing anything else to it, I then used the tool to open it and save it back to gm.
I got all kinds of texture errors.
I finally got a version that looked OK, although the file size was always smaller than the original.
It went from 195Kb to 190Kb.

It was totally useless in game, had no masts and was sinking. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

That's because before saving it as .gm you need to add locators files (which is why your version had no masts - with missing locators the game simply didn't know where to put them). Presumably that's why it was smaller.

@Petros,

When you open up the ship file(as in Lugger etc) it contains a load of files - so i think you have to also include some of those other gm files to get the complete, working model. I reckon with a little practise and trying stuff out i'll probably get the hang of it - the hardest part for me is going to be learning the moddling software basics!

Anyway, here's what I've been modyfing for the past few days:

<img src="http://republika.pl/kazeite/images2/74.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Bigger & meaner 74-gun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And no, you can't have it yet <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" /> Partly because I've discovered a buttload of texturing errors which need to be fixed, but mostly because I personally would like her to be <b>the</b> 74-gun of the mod, not that stock <i>Black Pearl</i> ripoff. But, that's what I want.

But what do <b>you</b> want? Should previous 74-gun remain and this one be added as yet another battleship?

That looks awesome! I would like to look at it closer in gm_view before make any comments, because I think the angle is diffcult for me to see it all. The waterline looks a little low on the hull, but the old 74 had the same problem. It is definitely better than the 74 we currently have, but I'm always loathe to remove ships from the game. Nice job though, Kazeite! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah I also feel bad removing ships... Just add it as another battleship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> So there is choice... we get so little choice in the top classes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

Woah Momma! now....*mimics jack sparrow*....where'd you get that?
brilliant! we now have a proper bone crunching 74 gunner to sail! all we need now is the english version, with black and yellow ore colours, then we can start building our little battlefleet of Nelson's ships..... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />
my suggestion is to make the original "Black Pearl Ripoff" 74 a 1600's 74 gunner, and make this one the 1700's 74 gunner. what say you? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />

Looks excellent! I vote for not replacing the current ships though. I don't like removing content; not even if the content that replaces it is better.

Leave the old 74 in the game. And change the name back from "heavy warship" to "74 gun ship of the line." The standard name for these ships was "74" and they were the workhorse of the navy, so you saw that name a lot.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> and thanks Kazeite, that was exactly the problem. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

As a follow-up question, has anyone figured out how to avoid the "Tool" from reversing the sunlit/shadowed effect?

I know MM was having this problem.
I see it as well, when I just saved a gm to vrml and back again to gm with the tool.

Yeah more ships = better game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Keep em all.

Another awesome model kazeite - is it just me or do you seem to 'do' a new ship every other day?!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

.....dont stop <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

As far as I can tell, its caused by polygon doubling. You can check polycount with GM_Viewer. If it doubles after exporting/importing, then you can expect shadow reversing.

But personally I've never encuntered this problem, even after modding three ships already. I guess that's because I've actually changed their structure, re-exporting them as vrmls.

So, I see that you want as much ships as possible. OK then, I'll fiddle with previous 74-gun (by adding steering wheel, for example <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />) and re-release both ships.
