Improved Ship of Line 74 guns

Um, scratch that... it seems that I <b>do</b> have that reversed shadowing problem as well... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Well, I have another theory - maybe it's because exported ships are turned inside out? (TOOL does have "Reverse normals" options) PotC puts texture on both sides on each polygon, but what if shadowing algorithm does differentiate between those two sides? What if it makes "light" to go straight through the ship to "shine" on incorrect side?

I'll try tomorrow to export my nevest version of 74-gun and see whether this hypothesis is correct or not.

EDIT: I've checked it with older version, and... it's not. Even though after checking the "Reverse normals" box ship ends up turned inside out ingame, it still has shadow on the wrong side <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Bugger <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Allright. I've uploaded upgraded Sol_74_gun to the FTP.

It even has a steering wheel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I guess this is still a problem for the new 74 ship as well then?

Still one good benefit of this reversed shadows glitch is that i actualy prefer the ship models where it happens when sailing in the 3D mode at night time.
Really I do and the reason is you can move the camera angle and frame your ship so you can have the moon in the background AND see the detail of your ships hull in the same view - its very pretty!

when the ship away from the moon is in shadow its not as nice looking....and well i can just watch my ship carve through the sea with that moon in the background for ages <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

so thats ONE reason why i can live with its oddness. Still it would be nice to know why its happening(and didnt before? with some of the older modded ship?). Oh kazeite - Cap'n_Drow found his version of Maya 4.5, maybe that can help? from his post in the alpha/beta forum:

Path to build 14 thread

<i>"Additionally, I've found my copy of Maya 4.5. I've tested the plugins. The ONLY one that works right with 4.5 is the Geometry export. I need to find a copy of 4.0 or earlier for the animation exporters. But I can be useful in exporting proper .gm's now. I just need a good tri'd model in .obj format that I can import to Maya, then I can export using the Akella tool. We'll need to do some test exports and make sure it all works right, but now would be the time to start checking collision models on any of the newer ships and stuff. I'm pretty sure I can do the same thing for buildings, islands and more. But again, I'll need to do some testing with someones assistance.
"</i>

Yeah, I've read it as well. Now excuse me while I stop salivating and start making a list of all things I'd... we all would like to have converted <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Maybe some dedicated thread would be preferred <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

As to why does it happen, the answer is: it's the way TOOL exports .vrml to .gm. As reported, it happens even when stock models are exported to vrml and then imported back into the TOOL and exported into .gm.

Ship looked pretty good in the game, once I figured out where to put the tga.tx file. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Nice, Kazeite! I'll gladly add her into Build 14. Should I add your improved versions of Build 13 ships into Build 13? I think I should. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

If we will be able to use Captain Drow's Maya 4.5 version to solve some lightning problems on the ships, perhaps we'll finally be able to add Merciless Mark's improved Surprise! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

is it possible to make the flying dutchman? it would probaby be one of the most difficult ships to make EVER, but it would be awsome.(i mean the flying dutchman from the film) you can find some highly detailed pictures of the entire ship as it was in the film. not a screenshot from the film, but a photo of the ship when it's in the drydock. it doesn't have any masts, but i figure that the rigging is the roughly the same as that from a manowar.

Manowar? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Flying Dutchman from DMC has, at most, 54 guns. Plus, those forward facing gatling guns <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

it looks a LOT bigger on the photo's. it looks like it has about 200 of them. if you would count, you'd probable be right, but it looks huge. i guess it is because of the height and the big overhang on the rear. i wonder if it would be actually possible to make those triple-guns. maybe only visually, or if possible a very short load time, but it would be a serious threat. the flying dutchman looks like it is mad of sea creatures and coral reef. that's what's so difficult in making it. the front is pretty cool with those teeth on it. a very important part in texturing would be those pieces of seaweed hanging from it. it makes a big difference.

Well, I've been busy testing the geometry exporter. I know this thing is supposed to work, but I've yet been able to get it to export a model. All it does so far is create an error.txt file that is empty. And no mesh at all. I'm still banging it around, but it would be helpful if Akella had included some documentation with the damned things.

I know I'm doing the export correctly, I'm just not sure exactly how the options should be set. And I've successfully exported to other formats, just can't get Akellas tool to play nice yet.

I'll keep ye all informed if I get the dratted creature beaten into submission!

You might want to read <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6973" target="_blank">this thread</a> - it chronicles the construction of the sloop with Maya.

Excellent, reading through it now. Thanks for the link, Kazeite. If you find other threads documenting how to use these damned plugins, please let me know. It would be a HUGE help.

Thanks again!

Cap'n Drow

No problem. We all counting on you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

In other news, I've uploaded my other 74-gun'ish ship to the FTP (it's in <i>Kazeite/Sol_74_gun_2</i> directory).
(to all guys who actually know something about tall ships and upon seeing it will no doubt scream something like "You idiot! There's no way this thing would even float!" I respond: "I know." <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Mind you, this is a separate, "new" ship - PotC won't even know it's there, because it doesn't have stats or anything. It's meant for test purposes only so far <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

(Yeah, I guess I should've made some stats or smth', but I don't remember how, and... I don't feel like adding them. Must be my inherent laziness <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> )

(and, yeah, I know it still red and black. I'll fix the textures so it's gold and black... someday <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Kazeite you idiot! That ships would never sail properly! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Just kidding, that is a really nice looking ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> I look forward to seeing it in the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />
