Liberated Oxbay all alone.

I have succed to liberate Oxbay all by myself. I played on Adventurer level.

This happend on the mission where you should steal a Corvette and sail to
Redmond with it, but instead I stayed to fight the two Frigates and the
Battleship and sunk all three of them. Then I took on the fort itself and
with a whole lot of luck I finally won and stormed it.
Exactly one month after the French took Oxbay it was free again and after
the battle I had reached level 12.
I never would have thought that it was possible, but it took time and many
restarts before I succeded.

Have anyone else done this?

That´s quite impressive indeed. Even in the battle defeating the English fleet trying to take Greenford back, I had to use a Frigate, and it got so shot up that it was already sinking when I managed to board the Battleship. Reminded me of the final battle in "Captain Blood".

I'm not sure how much hull I had left when the fort was destroyed but I had
no masts left and I think I would have been going under if they would have
starting to spit on my ship (Thank you dear `F3-button`).
I had, like I said before, a huge portion of luck while attacking the fort, two
pirate ships came around the cape, so the fort turned their cannons towards
them instead of me.
Otherwise I would have lost the battle, without a doubt.

However, to patch up your ship properly, you need a lot of Sail & planks. That is, if you need as much as with normal repairs at sea.

No, they're not invulnerable, Hellangel, they're just very hard to defeat. But it is possible. I did the same thing as Thunraz, but with 4 MoWs. Damn it, now I'll have to go and give it a try!!!!

Oh well done it in 3 minutes flat, sunk the BS, the 2 Frigs and killed the fort without dropping any of my ship's HP below 80%

owww disregard me, I just checked difficulty the 1st time in game, noticed I'm on easiest <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Anyway, switched to Adventurer.

Doing it with a Corvette really is something good.
 
Managed to do it!
It took nearly a half hour of manouvering and i kept putting the Frigates between me and the big guns of the fort but i did it with my trusty Fleut
BUT, after storming the city it wasnt liberated, it just went back to french hands after i left <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

Maybe i was too early in the quest to try storming it, ill try and do it the way Thunraz did it with the corvette.

Bit of a waste of time on my part tho!
 
I didn't know the purpuse of the game is to practice your quick save and quck load buttons after every shot. Better use cheats instead.
 
Perhasps someone here can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I've tried this three times, with dismal results. (Well, not totally dismal -- I gained a boatload of experience points each time.

First time, I took two frigates into Oxbay and eliminated the French squadron. Then I sailed back to Grennford to repair and replenish, and I returned to Oxbay. I hammer on that fort through as many cannonballas as a frigate could carry. I let my second frigate pound them, too, but eventually I ran out of ammunition and lumber and sailcloth (quick repair helps when taking a fort), but the fort never fell.

Next try was with a frigate and a battleship, both loaded to the scuppers with bombs and extra repair supplies. Again, I removed the French ships first, then gort repaired and came back. This time I watched through the telescope, and I noticed that although I was getting "Cannon exploded" with every volley, as was my second ship, the hull percentage never decreased. I was gradually reducing the crew value, but when it dropped to 10, it would not go any lower. The gins number didn't decrease, either.

Neither time did I get the port boarding icon.

Third attempt was at Falaise before Oxbay was liberated, and I got the same thing as my second attempt -- no reduction in hull percent and gradual attrition on the crew, but never able to take the city.

The first Oxbay attack and the Falaise attack were on the PC, the second Oxbay attack was playing XBox.

In all cases, I had really buffed cannoneers (Professional Cannoneer and Accuracy and Cannons both at 10) for both of my ships. I was getting cannon destroyed at every shot, so i got a gazillion exp. points and went up 2 or 3 levels each time.

But I couldn't take either town. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need the build?

gonzo, I beleive you DO need the Build to take on the forts BEFORE the "Capture Greenford" quest. I did that with 3 battleships, actually, in the original game. Used the fast sailing exploit. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
 
NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I loved pounding the forts that wouldnt give up, It gave you so much experience... And now Ive got build 12 running properly I can never do it again. ah well, thats life.
 
Thanks to all for the info. Installing the build has been on my list of things to do for some time, but I wanted to beat it once on the PC using the plain vanilla version. (I have beat it once on the Xbox before buying the PC version.) But I keep starting over because once I get the Mephisto and have all my officers nicely experienced, it gets too easy before I get very far in the main quest. The main quest is kind of a pale, puny thing compared to all the side quests and snatching ships from the French, so I tend to do everything else before I even recognoiter Oxbay, therby ensuring a copious supply French prizes.

So I guess I'll terminate the current game and go get the build, as I'd really like to sack Falaise.
