Making a New Lifeboat

That sucks! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Thanks. You can tell I was going for the "Jack Sparrow / Jolly Mon" look. On normal settings it is even leaking.

Anyway, here are the claws.

Perhaps I can call it a demon boat! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

that IS wierd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

speaking of boat leaks, it happens with more ships. i was also pretty spooked when a shark lept up through the bottom of my boat! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

That problem has increased with the addition of realistic waves mod.

It seems that ships don't have collision detection underneath, but only at the bow.
Moving forward gives the bow wave, but water underneath can rise up over the water line onto the deck.

With calmer waters, the problem goes away.

In Ships_init.c the "refShip.WaterLine" value can be decreased to raise a ship.

Unfortunately in some cases, the ship has to be raise up more than what looks normally acceptable.

I'll STILL buy one.

Given the amount of water I see in other boats, etc. etc. I would consider that to be a VERY minor detail.

Water inside the boat is actually "good" in this case, just like Jack at the beginning of CotBP.

Setting refShip.WaterLine to -0.15 for this boat actually eliminates all water on the deck.
However, then it looks a little less like the sinking "Jolly Mon".

The problem with this boat, and what ruins it, is the bow's abnormal wake.

i don't mind the water inside the boat at all, with any boat. i just take it for granted. i've seen it happen with the schooner at times. even with the frigate when in a storm once, which was kinda disturbing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I agree ..it IS disturbing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/boom.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":boom" border="0" alt="boom.gif" />
Is there some way of making ship hulls watertight? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Don't talk me of making ship hulls watertight. That is probably one of the most insanely complicated things to do. Ever. I told you before I did some modeling for Virtual Sailor before. There we also had the "water in boat" syndrome. The programmer tried time and again to fix it and even years later, I think it's STILL not fixed properly. It did get better with subsequent versions, but never entirely fixed. I think that with all our inability to mess with the game engine, we don't even need to try and fix that particular problem. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Wow! That bow wave looks really weird. Looks like it somehow insists starting on the same spot as the not resized version. I wonder if Kazeite would know any way to counter that. Have you tried exporting to VRML and re-importing? What happens then? If the worst comes to the worst, could we use your skin on normal Tartane size? I don't want to lose that one. She looks GREAT! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

It's a lot more than skin. There is quite a bit of creative rigging going on there.
Did you notice the thicker shroud lines?

I don't like the Tartane's size. Let's just see what happens.

In that case I'd suggest just using your new one, even though it does have that weird bow wave effect. Perhaps we can fix it at some point. And if not, at least we'll have a really good lifeboat model with only one weird effect. There's plenty of other boats that have a weird effect anyway. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=224034:date=Dec 1 2007, 05:45 PM:name=Pieter Boelen)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen @ Dec 1 2007, 05:45 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->... Various attempts have proved failures.

Exporting Jolly Mon to VRML and re-importing into Tool, adding collision data from:

1. "Boat" (the one with crew), Tool can't read it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

2. "Boat you posted", Tool works but game crashes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
I believe this boat doesn't actually have the data. Too bad as it is the same size as my Jolly Mon.

3. "Gunboat" as this boat is about as long as the original Tartane, thus longer than the Jolly Mon, the data produces the same kind of bow claws only of slightly different shape.

Also, Jolly Mon then also has the inverted shadow, two problems for the price of one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

So, there doesn't seem to be anything else this small, with appropriate collision data in this game.

It has been, all in all, a very unproductive day

There is one more boat you could try. It's a new one made by the Russians for AoP. See attached for the file. Thanks for working on this, Petros! If all fails, I want to use your boat anyway! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So generating collision data from scratch (which TOOL theoretically can do) doesn't work at all? And no one has been able to use this feature succesfully?

The beeping problem is actually mentioned in the Tool ReadMe:<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Ships have some extra information in them that other models don't. For VRML models that information is generated by the tool, but not correctly - which results in the computer beeping once when loading such a model at sea. About further consequences I'm not sure. The tool will prompt you for an existing model to copy the missing data from. If you just cancel that dialog, the data will be generated.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Above it says that the "information is generated by the Tool, but not correctly - which results in the computer beeping once when loading such a model at sea". This is the only reference to collision data in the Tool help file:<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->When import is complete, the tool will prompt you for an existing file to copy "collision information" from. This should usually be ignored (choose Cancel), except for ships (see Ship Import). Not sure this has really anything to do with collision.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo(post=224182:date=Dec 3 2007, 07:39 AM:name=Kazeite)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Kazeite @ Dec 3 2007, 07:39 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->So generating collision data from scratch (which TOOL theoretically can do) doesn't work at all? In my trials, I always selected another ship for Tool to get the data from.

I just now tried generating collision data from scratch, and got a game crash.
This is the same as when I tried to have Tool get it from the "Boat" (rowboat) Pieter originally posted.

So It looks like Tool doesn't generate it's own collision data very well.

To Pieter, about that other boat you posted, I'll check it later today.

<!--quoteo(post=224166:date=Dec 3 2007, 05:58 AM:name=Pieter Boelen)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pieter Boelen @ Dec 3 2007, 05:58 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->There is one more boat you could try. When I looked at it in Viewer, I said "Oh not another one" It is too long and it's facing the wrong way!

It looks like just another prop, with crew, that's not meant to sail.

Went through the motions anyway, with Tool using it's data.

Put it in game and once again, as I expected, .... it crashed!

Well, at least we tried. It was the final option I could think of for borrowing the collision data. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
So what to do now? I vote for "release your boat anyway"! Perhaps we'll be able to fix it some day. But I don't want to lose your work on this one. Looks <i>waaay</i> to nice not to use her. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Use it anyway. It doesnt crash the game, it adds functionality and the bow..pff..who is looking at the bow? I always use first-person when sailing..
