More filmships

Darth-me

Landlubber
Hi, I'm new to modding POTC, and i heard that ship editing is the best place to start, so i thought i'd try and make some ships from the films that aren't in my game (I've got build 13 & filmships mod). So the first ship I'm doing is the dauntless, am following this <a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=RetexturingTutorial&v=5le" target="_blank">tutorial</a>
But I've got to the stage where I convert back to .tx, but the .tx convertor won't accept the file, this error comes up: "Error access file: ........................./dauntless/" and then then the texture name. Anyone know what's going on?

Thx, bye.

Ship retexturing is indeed a good place to start. Making the Dauntless would be most appreciated. You could try basing her on the <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10917" target="_blank">Endeavour</a>, because both ships are very similar.
I've never seen such an eror message before in my life. How did you get that? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Strange.
I know hex editors hold a file open in a way that other programs cant access at the same time.

I wonder if Gimp does that.

Is anything else accessing the file?

Try saving the file, then closing it.
Then try to load it in Tx converter to recompress it.

I don´t think so. I´m using Gimp quite often for my drawings and never experienced something like this. At least Gimp 2.0 upwards doesn´t.

Bava

Try closing all programs using the texture file except the TX Converter and see if you still have the problem.

Petros, you're a genius!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

I don't know if this is what you meant, but it's how I interpreted it.

I made a backup of my skin, incase I killed it, then opened it in ACDsee viewer, then saved it, and it works now! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

OK pieter, I'll try to give you a satisfactory Dauntless, and will change it until it is. Also, I was using the Pinnace of War as my base, but now I'm not so sure, as From what I know, the Dauntless is slightly shorter, and quite a lot taller than the Endeavor, but the Pinnace of War is just too small. What do you think?

According to Commodore John Paul Jones, who knows quite a bit of these kind of things, the Endeavour and Dauntless are pretty similar. Perhaps you should send him a PM to check? Basing the Dauntless on the Fearless model might also be a possibility.

It was even in the stock game. Check your RESOURCE\MODELS\Ships folder.

OK, I'll try fearless, no-idea what it looks like though, could someone get me a screenshot please? I'll start on it anywy though. Sorry about all the delays.

Do you know the <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/tools/gmviewer.zip" target="_blank">GM Viewer</a>? That allows you to see any of the 3D models without having to try them out in the game. Be sure to check all the <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/tools.htm" target="_blank">modding tools</a> on my site. There's some good ones. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

lol, fear<u>less</u>, Daunt<u>less</u> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

also, when I'm finding out what textures I need, do I need to use the hex editor on every single model?

<!--quoteo(post=226479:date=Dec 17 2007, 01:31 PM:name=Darth-me)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Darth-me @ Dec 17 2007, 01:31 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->also, when I'm finding out what textures I need, do I need to use the hex editor on every single model?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The Gm viewer is the best tool to see what textures are used by the model.

When making your own textures to replace the originals, make sure you use the exact number of letters/characters in the new texture name, as in the original.

You will use a hex editor on the models only to replace the textures names.
That is where it is critical, that the length of the names be exactly the same.
Off by one letter and the game will crash when using the ship.

I'm using this <a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=RetexturingTutorial&v=5le" target="_blank">tutorial:</a>

I can't use the fearless, as it has few guns (compared to the dauntless' 100), and I don't know how to change locators, so I'm gonna go with Endeavor, do I have to ask its creator?

You can try to PM <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showuser=8211" target="_blank">Razør</a>, but he it might take a while for him to respond. He took the model out of Voyage Century Online anyway, so I say go through with it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

OK, I just posted on his thread anyway, but I'll go through with it. Also, what files do I need to edit (like ships init) to get the ship in game, the re-texture's done.
