PotC Build 12 Release Announcement

The Blacksmith?

Hi there, great mod! Only thing i dont like so far is the fact that encounter ships are similar to what you have, no huge armadas as of yet and if you kill wantonly you lose your gold. I loved the fact you could sail a small boat up to a massive ship, board it and take it.

Ok where is this so called blacksmith? Repairing my swords would be great but i cant find the place, where is it? If this is in the wrong section please point me in the right direction please. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

No huge armadas? But i've been repeatedly attack (and have attacked) fleets of `7-9` ships with my manowar... maybe it depends on the class of ship you sail.

As for the blacksmith, go to Douwesan port, you will see a guy walking around who looks like the default player skin ("Blaze"). Talk to him. He will fix the blade you are equipped with.

If you have installed the new Alan Smithee Blacksmith mod, however, the blacksmith will have a shop somewhere in all the major towns. Just ask the people passing by where his shop is.

Yep, it seems to be limited by the ship you sail, i like the smaller ships beacause they are so much faster and manouverable, it great fun taking down bigger ships this way but it isnt really happening for me.

As for the blacksmith mod, so far i am unable to download it, it takes me to some ftp server and spits the dummy everytime, is there somewhere else i can get it?

Thanks in advance

He'll give you a chance to up your difficulty level, which is an option, but the other option is that you can tell him you want to be informed of ALL sightings of ships - even those bigger than you that you (presumably) have no chance of beating in a fight. That should do it for ya! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I always play like that - love to do a sneak up on a big ship and board her... My men always have great morale because I have them on double rum <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> rations, so they fight like tigers! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Aye Catalina,it also boosts me morale when I'd be 'ave'n a double rum in me <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hi,
I had installed build12 over build11 and I can play. But I can't talk with the traders on the streets or with the gouvernour of Redmond or with the Harbermaster of Redmond. How can I fix that? Or is my installation faulty?
I have a europe version of POTC

Try resettin' yer keyboard mappings back tew de Defaults in de Options dialog! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Wow! What a MOD!

I had just finished playing Sid Meier's new "Pirates!" game (on Rogue w/100% completion), and thought to myself "I'm missing something". Although fun and addictive (it has that "let's do one more battle/dance/fight"-quality since every task can be completed within 5 mins), it feels very repetitive and "gamey", and I simply felt detached from being a pirate. I felt I was playing a boardgame shuffling around pieces and playing some "Dragon's Lair"-type cutscenes where I had to properly time the button presses in order to advance. It's very cinematic (animations are very well done) and entertaining (all `mini-games` are very polished and fun, and the dynamic music is captivating), and in that respect I guess it succeeds as a game: It entertains. But is it a pirate game?

Well, not for me. I didn't feel immersed in a pirate world. I didn't feel I was exploring a world, in which I was steering my own ship and developing a unique character, taking him on an adventure. There were no interesting characters and events that would have fleshed out the world and created a believable setting for the time period. The almost `non-existent` dialogue was also inappropriate for the characters and `time-period` and very poorly written, riddled with all the typical grammar mistakes a `high-schooler` would make (insure/ensure, affect/effect, it's/its). In a sense I felt I was playing an Arcade game; shallow and `fast-paced`.

But it achieved on thing: It made me look back to POTC to figure out what was so different with that game, and why I felt more attached to the `pirate-setting` it created. I hadn't played POTC for 1.5 years now and had almost forgotten all the details. As I just played "Pirates!" I had a `deja-vu`, since it felt so similar... but still, a certain something was missing from it. The immersion. I wasn't aware of that until I went back and installed POTC again, and I must say (now more than ever) that Akella truly created something amazing for that time, and I appreciate the effort they put into making it much more now (even with all the shortcomings due to the Disney/Xbox deal). It really stands the test of time, still looking as georgeous/immersive as before, after almost 2 years!

And now that I have just discovered this great mod community and Build 12, I feel I can have a totally fresh and new pirate game experience on an already amazing engine. I'm so glad I went back to POTC and found you guys!

So, thanks to all the modders for creating all these great enhancements in Build 12 for us PotC gamers. Your dedication and time spent on this are much appreciated! You gave POTC a new breath of life, and in a measure which I rarely see in other mod communities.

I have several issues with Build 12 that I hope can be addressed:

1.
Something very bad happened that hasn't happened to my Win98SE install for as long as I can remember having it. I can't even recall such a thing happening in the old Win95 before. After I completed the Build 12 download/install (into a seperate folder), the installer needed to RESTART WINDOWS in order for it to complete. This in itself is pretty disappointing, since I only accept this behavior of installers when they really need to install *system* files on the `driver-level` (e.g. gfx/snd cards), which would justify a reboot. A normal program installation with a `well-written` installer wouldn't need to restart Windows. Now, in this case (Build 12) we're only dealing with files (!) copied to a `user-defined` folder. Why on earth do you guys have to mess around with Windows on such a deep level (system) that it requires a restart?!

My suspicions about this odd behavior of the installer were then justified when Windows rebooted and stopped at the DOS level with the following message (extract):

"Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting. Windows may not start or run properly. If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again."

Never having seen such behavior in my 10 years with Microsoft's Windows, you can imagine the horror I felt. After pressing a key to confirm this warning, Windows booted up normally, to my great relief. So far, it seems to work as before. I keep my fingers crossed that it'll stay that way and no serious harm was done to my system. I thought this might be related to adding an uninstall entry of Build 12 in "Add/Remove Programs", but the entry was properly added.

So, it makes me wonder then what went wrong with the installer and the system files it failed to upgrade. Would you please explain this installer behavior to me and why it is necessary?

Would you also please tell me which system files were affected and how I can check if everything is in good order or if something needs fixing?

2.
In the installer I checked both the main files as well as the texture update. After the download/install was completed, the installer window stayed open and a second (!) installer window/process popped up asking me the same questions as to where I would like to install to. The first installer window waited at "100% complete". Since I thought that this might actually be the installer for the additional texture update (why make two installers pop up that look the same? This is confusing and I was at first thinking about cancelling it), I eventually decided to also let it run and pointed it to the same folder I installed the previous files (which took around 50 minutes) into. This second installer took only a few minutes and after it was finished, the first installer closed, too.

So, I hope this is intentional and that I did it correctly?

3.
I installed it in a separate folder first to separate it as an archive. The installation left a `temp-file` one `folder-level` higher than the specified root folder ("Pirates of the Caribbean"). So, it is "outside" the folder it copied all the files into. Is it safe to delete this file (~GLH06b9.TMP | 1,187,903 bytes)?

Oh! I just noticed this file has the same size and datestamp as the main 'ENGINE.exe' file (US version). So, I assume this file can be safely deleted and was merely included to fix the compatibility issues between US and European game installs of Build 12, correct?

Thanks for answering these questions.

Glad to see you're seeking adventure and fun with the modded version of PotC, I think the modders that contributed to these mods did an incredible job of making a buggy stilted game into something absolutely magnificent...

I hope I can help you with your questions, although Mad Jack is probably better suited for these answers as he is the one who built the installer.

#1 - I believe the addition of B12 in the add/remove programs section of Control Panel created the necessity for the reboot. I think you should be just fine.

#2 - Sounds like you got everything okay! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

#3 - <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Humm, here's where you may fall into a problem. Build 12 (the installer) was engineered to install directly into your PotC game folders, and to automatically backup everything replaced into a "backup" folder so that should you wish to uninstall, everything would be put back into place. I'm not sure what it would do to that protection if you install manually by copying and overwriting all the game files. The .tmp file MAY be all those `back-up` files - which of course you would need if you wanted to uninstall via the Windows Control Panel uninstall function.

The installer is built so that you can get online updates - new mods (which come on a fairly regular basis) - quickly and easily without fuss, click, zip, you're finished and ready to play again...

I'll see if I can get Mad Jack to address this question, since I believe what you needed to do was to install directly over your gamefiles instead of into an archival folder. Hang loose! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Sorry to hear you're having troubles, mate! Let's see if Ol' Jack can clear things up for you (or at least not confuse things more...).

First off, I can assure you that the installer does not replace any Windows system files. It downloads and installs only the files it needs to from a PA! server, and said files are associated only with PotC. The dll files that get replaced are not registered to the system, and are only loaded into memory by ENGINE.EXE, so there's no need for the installer to try and replace system files. My guess would be that a piece of malware on your system is trying to exhert itself during the installation process, effectively locking up the dll's in question. That's the only situation where the installer might want to restart the system - if the dll's are `in-use`. Which they shouldn't be, unless ENGINE.EXE is running.

The "Add/Remove Programs" entries are registry entries only, and would not require a reboot.

That extra installer window you see popping up at the tail end of the process is the Build 12 updater, which can be run by itself (hence the reprompting for the installation location). It should not be leaving a temp file behind; it should be cleaning up any residual cruft generated by the installation process. I'll have a look at that one. But, yes, you can safely delete it.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of additional service. And welcome aboard, mate! The rum's on Cat!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

The old cheats that were available do not work `post-Build` 10.1 - and so far no one has been interested in them enough to mod them into the game since then.

I'm not even sure we still have them archived somewhere... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

There is a way to `re-assign` your skill points by talking to a priest, I believe. Haven't had the need to do that, myself, but it can give you more of a flexibility which is nice if, for instance, you want to max yourself out on melee early in the game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

So, I hope to get PoTC this weekend, maybe even when I get home this afternoon. One Question: The build 11, that´s just the 20+ MB file, or do I have to DL something else for it to work? The build 12 I´ll be unable to get before next weekend, the university might object to downloading 150 or more MBs over their WLAN network. So, that´ll have to wait until I get home (my "real" one) next week. But, in theory, I ought to be able to play with build 11 as well, don´t I?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->...The build 11, that´s just the 20+ MB file...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yes, but if i remember corectly, that option to install extra textures shouldn't be activated, because the files for this aren't no longer present on that server.

Before i was switching to build 12, i enjoyed that playing of build 11. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The extra textures are available in the B12 download - but are purely optional, they are not important to gameplay - they are cosmetic. I changed a bunch of the loading screens and textures in some of the rooms to reflect a new map I made up for PotC... The extra textures replace the reversed map of the REAL Caribbean with my new map. That's all.

It's a nice map, tho. I made it to look like an authentic `Mercator-style` map of the 1500's, `hand-colored` and with sea monsters and ships and other interesting illustrations.

If you want a printable version of it, you can find it here: <a href="ftp://ftp.ganotherapyusa.com" target="_blank">ftp://ftp.ganotherapyusa.com</a> - look in the "pub" directory - "new col g" and "new col x" - the "X" version has some naked female breasts (hardly salacious) in the illustrations so if you want a "safe" map if you wish prying smaller eyes not to see these kinds of things, take the "G" version in which they are coyly covered... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Grimm, yes, you will be able to play with B11 just fine - you will have to start a new game, tho. BUT as a bonus - once you do decide to go up to B12, you will NOT have to start a new game, you will be able to continue using your B11 savegames - but of course you do need to renitialize by hitting the "I" key...

One small note, tho, regarding B11 to B12 - if you have already gone to Khael Roa and defeated Silehard and his pirates, you will not have the option to cut loose either Clement or Danielle afterwards. This is a small inconvenience - but I am not sure how the changes in dialog will affect your gameplay if you are in "midstream" - say you've defeated Silehard but not gone through the temple yet...

So best not to start that portion of your gameplay (going to KR) until you get B12. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

problem with build 12

this works not, or at least not with me

when I start a new game the progam just stops running at a black screen, when I press F2 for my personnel menu there are a lot of "errors" in it

can somebody help me...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>Iwan, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

What you need to do here in this case is to hit the "I" key when you open your game - that is important because this will reset everything. The other thing you need to do is reset your keyboard mappings to default from the F1 Settings menu. This should hopefully get things under control for ya. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
