Guys i am not sure what the differences are is there arnyone well versed in the differences that could explain them briefly? thanks!!!!!

You can have a look at these threads where we had the same question:

http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/16705-should-i-play-potc-or-coas

It's basically a matter of preference. Unmodded, CoAS is better for sure. With mods, PotC can easily give it a run for its money.
There's a lot of cool stuff in PotC: New Horizons that isn't in CoAS and the opposite is true for CoAS as well.

your the best thank you very much!!!!!

Aww, you beat me to it. :mm

I need to spend more time with GOF to be sure, but it seems that POTC is the more realistic sailing game while GOF has better graphics and is better everywhere else.

realistic sailing being just the actual sailing game? it also seems to me there is colony management in POTC while COAS is a little lackluster, I personally like the idea of struggling my way to become a captain and many of the starts barring one in COAS just gives you a fairly decent ship and no hard work to start, im currently buying POTC because it looks awesome too but could you input a couple of big differences?

Colony management in PotC is a WIP mod and doesn't work quite right yet; don't get your hopes up over that.

The PotC New Horizons ModDB Profile does have a lot of information on our modding work for that game: http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-horizons
You can have a browse through it and see what you think. And our YouTube channel has lots of videos of both games: http://www.youtube.com/user/PiratesAhoyCommunity

Seriously, I have only spent 2-3 hours on COAS, which is not enough to have a valid opinion. But I will try.

On land COAS has a very dense world. It is like comparing Baroque to Danish Modern.

At sea COAS is in arcade mode while POTC is in realistic mode.

POTC has more story lines, but it is the older game and is more developed.

A year ago I would have said COAS is certainly better. But now with the realistic sailing mode working very well and the water graphics being fixed I would say it is up to personal preference.

Here's some that I'd consider major advantages of PotC over CoAS:
- DirectSail
- Selectable Storylines (with a LOT of varied extensive scripted stories that do also offer free play)
- Periods Mod

Of course there's other things too, such as special effects for the film ships, steamships, the water turning Caribbean light blue near shores, etc.
It really is too much to say in just a few short sentences, but this should give you a general idea at least.

I've not really played CoAS myself either, so I can't speak for that. However, I'm well aware that it was a fairly good game to begin with and also made a lot better with the mods.

Having them both is probably the best choice, since we do have the source code for CoAS and modding it will pickup fast once the New Horizons is ported over (although not any time soon). So it is a good investment into the future, I think.

Very true. I'm not going to tell anyone to NOT get CoAS. It's a good game, getting better with a huge potential for sure. :yes
But I'll always encourage people to try PotC too. :cheeky

COAS is really nice indeed

however i totally prefer POTC without mod, and totally fall in love with the mod (again thanks to the really powerful modders)

cant add more :)

Progress on COAS is very slow, since there are fewer modders working on it, which is kind of sad considering we have the source code for it. Given that, it has huge potential, greater than POTC IMO (thou the POTC mod team always seem to have a few tricks up thir sleeve :onya). Eventually, with more modders, it will become the dominant mod, but untill we find more modders, its going to take awhile. So if you want to play a game thats rich in features, ships and things to do, POTC with the build mod is the way to go for now.

CoAS definitely has the largest potential because of the source code.

There isn't many modders working on PotC either; I think it's pretty much equal for both games.

Because nobody has it anymore, apparently. The only kept the source code for the new version of the Storm engine, but not the 2.0 .
If that hadn't been the case, we probably would've had it already. We did ask and even got a reply and that's what they said, as unfortunate as it is. :facepalm

Dam, that really sucks man ... to think of the things we could do ... best not to think about that now I guess, but you guys have accomplished so much without it anyway, and to think the original developers thought some of it to be impossible. :keith
