Presenting to Pieter...The Amsterdam (in progress)

Doober

Buccaneer
Storm Modder
I've been working quite a bit on a skin that I know Pieter has wanted for a long time: The VOC ship "Amsterdam". I have had quite a bit of assistance from Kazeite in adding cannons and such, but I thought I would open this to the whole group here as a thanks to Pieter for all his work. I need a modeler who can make a few minor modifications. Anyone who is willing to help, please let me know and I can let you know what changes that need to be made, they are mostly texture mapping. The skin is still in progress, so it will look much better when finished, but I thought I would post my work so far.

NICE!!! Excellent work, Doober. So which model is that being based on and what are you trying to get done model wise?

Cap'n Drow

Hey Captn! it is based off of the indiaman1 which was modified by Kazeite. I am in need of having certain portions mapped differently.

1. If you look at the rudder, you will see the edge of it takes it's texture from the stern, which looks really bad.
2. If you look down from the top, you will see the same problem on the top of the hull walls.
3. The wood trim on the poop deck is the same texture as the keel, which makes it practically impossible to reskin
4. The center top deck has a "castle wall" look to it that the Amsterdam does not have. I don't know if it is possible to cut it down, but it would look better.

Those are the main issues I can think of right now. The improved indiaman is on the FTP under Kazeite's folder. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if others pitched in to get it done. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

heh this is great - i think Pieter will be over the moon about it - so i'm glad you've done this for him <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> It would be fantastic if the modeling guys could get this ready to put in the Build13 release - not much time though!!

great and worthy idea Doober <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Basically, that's the way original ship, <i>Corvette1</i> was skinned, and it was carried into Indiaman without any alterations.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->4. The center top deck has a "castle wall" look to it that the Amsterdam does not have. I don't know if it is possible to cut it down, but it would look better.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Now that's something that wasn't present in the original Corvette <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actually, comparing existing ship with the real <i>Amsterdam</i>, I see that there are some more things that can be done to accuratize it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
Removing two cannons from the stern,
Extending rudder up,
Putting a lantern on top <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

If they could be altered, that would be awesome. I am drawing near the end of the skinning portion. I need to do the figurehead and some additional trim on the sides, but that is about it. I reworked the side windows and improved the look of the green to make it look more realistic. Once we get it all done, I may see if a more experienced skinner can improve the area at the base of the statues feet. I just can't get it to work properly as three areas meet there. It is looking pretty sweet though!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I just had a look at that pic again Doober...erm are those mer<i>men</i> on the detail for the back, near the rear windows? I cant quite see them <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Cant wait to see the finished thing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

LOL - uhm... yeah those sultry semi-naked sea-temptresses are like... erm... dudes. Uh, muscled sailor mer-men dudes. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

What the deuce??? Well a quick web-search shows that, in fact, the amsterdam DID have it's rear-end bejeweled by dudes, erm - mermen. Here's the pic:

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/VOC_Amsterdam.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Haven't you heard that women on a ship are bad luck? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Hook

I am curious, though... was <i>Amsterdam</i> the only ship which had a statue of half-naked guy holding a dead chicken on its stern or not? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

well we are talking about a <b>Dutch</b> ship no? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> {runs for cover before pieter can see this} <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

nice find on that pic Capt H.M.Murdock - might be usefull to the skinners?

I wonder what exactly the story on those carvings is? Pieter will know <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

i'm intrigued.

Its a fine looking ship though for sure - looks like a full sized rebuild?
You should see the state we keep our old ships in in the uk <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Actually, if you look on the other side, it is a guy holding a trident and standing next to a small horse. Because the skin is duplicated on both sides you are unable to have different statues for each side (unless someone knows a trick), I used the trident guy for both sides because I thought he looked a bit cooler. Because the statues on the Amsterdam are on the corner, I attempted to wrap the statue on the ship with some success. It would be much cooler of course if the statue was modeled on, but I believe that would add alot more work to the ship. Also becaue of the way the ship is texture mapped, I am unable to put the name of the ship on it, which is most unfortunate.

And no, they are NOT mermen. They have feet! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c241/aloych/Daniel/modship2.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Here is some additional updates from a different angle. I reworked the windows on the side and made the green look a little better.

well its an easy mistake to make when your reeling under the shock of half naked guys wearing bath towels(strangling chickens?!) on the stern of a main-line battleship!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Thats coming along very nice by the way Doober <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Darn it! Whoever did the texture mapping on this model did a terrible job! The bow will need redone as well because the bow texture is also used in the area where the rigging attaches to the ship. The bow is tough because I am trying to put the Amsterdam's lion figurehead on it and it is simply not working.

It would be nice if someone could isolate a lion figurehead from one of the other ship models, as well as a steering wheel as TT mentioned in an AoP thread.
That way they could be attached to ships using mast locators.

Doober, I've worked with the Corvette skin so if ye need any help ...

also, the statues might not look bad if just painted from just the stern perspective.

Hey Petros! I tried to put the statues on the stern, but due to the shape of the stern, I couldn't get them to fit correctly. I did upload the in-progress skin to the ftp under the filefolder Doober. It uses the Indiaman1 model if you want to take a better look at it.

So when you run into problems like the texture maps Petros, how do you typically work around it?

As soon as I'm done with my Junk(still banging on that damned thing), I'll have a go at adding some changes to the model and creating a new UV set for you, Doober!

Petros: That is something I'm going to try and do as soon as I've gotten the last of this down pat. Making new UV sets for any models that need them, as well as beefing up the model details here and there. At least that my plan.

Cap'n Drow

That would be great! Here, have a beer on me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I frequently have to rethink my color scheme, sometimes 3/4 through a project.

Then of course the is a lot of T&E.
It's not thorough and efficient but Trial and Error.

It would be really cool to have a some separate figure heads and a separate steering wheel, that would make ships a bit more unique. and it would add much more realisme.
